Santa Fe via Willow Posted July 28, 2011 Share #1 Posted July 28, 2011 IF Governor Cuomo closes Arthur Kill Correctional Facility, the land & property might be a good spot for a Ferry Terminal. It is right on the Kill van Kull & near the West Shore Expressway {440}. Practical problems & questions remain concerning the water's depth & if it can, could be used for ferries, plus all the usual bureaucracy & red tape accompanying these things. The 55, 74/(84), & inevitably various other bus routes, existing & new, would serve this ferry terminal. Plus it would be near a, the proposed West Shore Lightrail. Should Gov Cuomo shut AKCF, I'd rather it be used for mass transit &/or by other civil services than become a nest of a million homes, condos & townhouses anchovy canned into AKCF's spot. A Wal-Mart or a movie theater there would be , but unlikely. Despite my hypothetical Ferry Terminal suggesting here I'd rather Gov Cuomo leave AKCF OPEN. Some things are better left as they are. AKCF is an SI fixture & "landmark". Plus all the folks who work there, living on or near SI. Closing AKCF would also end the 55 & 74/(84) being SI`s "Oz" & "Cell Block H" runs.
