trainfan22 1,782 #2 Posted June 3, 2008 No the R32 R38 R40 R44 and R68 don't emit any type of exhaust. They run on third rail there are not DMUs or diesel trains. Electic trains don't emit exhust expept for dual mode locomotives that run on both diesel power and third rail.
disgruntledPR 0 #3 Posted June 3, 2008 thanks for the reply. so its prolly just subway grime? maybe steel dust or something? you know what im talking bout? lol
trainfan22 1,782 #4 Posted June 3, 2008 Thats steel dust that causes that smell. And btw the track beds are cleaned by the vaclum train. Which runs late at night so it depends on how often the vaclum trains comes though a certain part of track.
metsfan 2 #5 Posted June 3, 2008 You may also be smelling brakes. When a train forces air out to street level and it has new-ish brakes the brake dust smell can get out to the street. Happened to me for the first time last week. I am used to smelling brakes on (NJT) trains, but that was a first for subway stuff. - Andy
