"London riots": Dozens injured in city's Tottenham neighborhood after fatal shooting of a local resident by Police

BBC News staff/AP

Sunday August 7, 2011

"More than 40 people have been arrested after rioting saw police attacked, buildings looted and vehicles set alight in Tottenham, north London.

Twenty-six officers and three others were hurt in the violence which erupted after a protest over the fatal shooting by police of Mark Duggan on Thursday.

Residents surveyed the damage after homes were looted and shops burnt down.

Tottenham MP David Lammy said: "A community that was already hurting has had its heart ripped out."

The Metropolitan Police said all the officers had now left hospital.

The people arrested remain in custody for offences including violent disorder, burglary and theft.

BBC crime reporter Ben Ando said there were rumours in the community that a teenage girl who was part of the peaceful protest had been in a kind of confrontation with police.

He said: "That appears to be the flashpoint. That was the moment at around about just after eight o'clock when it seemed that elements in the crowd decided to pick on two police cars. They were then set on fire."

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating Thursday's shooting.

A police officer was also shot in the incident, which happened in what was called a "pre-planned" event, under Operation Trident, which investigates gun crime in the African and Caribbean communities. Police had stopped a minicab which Mr Duggan had been travelling in.

On Saturday night, shops and homes were raided and cash machines ripped out in Tottenham. There were also thefts from shops in nearby Wood Green.

London Fire Brigade said it had attended 49 fires in the area."

FYI. This is a mostly Black (i.e Carribean/Afro-British)neighborhood of London similar to Kings County's Central Brooklyn Neighborhoods and also Southeast Queens i.e St. Albans, Hollis, Springfield Gardens. Not to mention in 1985 there was also riots in that same North London neighborhood after another Black Resident was shot by London Police.

This is a concern with less than a year before the 2012 Olympics starts.

The police are evil and police departments world-wide should be scrapped.

Watch what you say in the comments Joe, Not every cop is evil.some protect there citizens believe it not. I guess we should let the Criminals run wild is that what you want? Very disrespectful.

Hey Joe I want you to try to say that to the police officers that gave up their lives on September 11th, and to the families that lost cops to the buildings that day. They won't be pleased at all.

Sarcasm, it's a dying art.... people are just too literal.

I have to admit though, the absurdist element of sarcasm is far too enjoyable to see misinterpreted.

This reminds me of the Rodney King incident to some degree. The only difference is Rodney King didn't get shot or killed for that matter. Plus the riot that came about killed dozens of people where in London only one person was killed, so far.

Very true. There some simlar issues in play in both cases. Race/classism(there is also plenty of poor whites in UK as well)police bruality, lack of employment(due to the global recession) teen/young adults with nothing to do, etc. Seems like much of the so called poor and working class neighborhoods of London is similar to what Watts/South Central LA 20 years ago at time of Rodney King riots.

I think its more of a deepening social problem, we are entering a world where there is a lot less opportunity, and not just in America, but in Europe, and in the Arab world as well. Younger people are tired of struggling, they worked hard in school went to college and are out here with no jobs, and all they want is the same opportunity to live comfortably like their parents or to move up in life. Young people of today through no fault of their own have to live with the mistakes previous generations have made politically, and you are crazy if you think it cant happen here.

Couldn't agree with you more here Foxie, it'll soon begin here in the states if our situation keeps up.

Well said. In case of the Tottenham while racism probably did play a role in starting it, the bigger issue of 'rich vs poor aka the haves/have nots has to be raised. In much of the modern world, not just in US and the UK if this mega recession(I say we on verge of a global depression)has caused massive unemployment, poverty, etc. If this crappy economy continues place, here in US like Detroit, NYC, LA could be the site of a future riot. Hope it does not happen but telling it like it is.

Funny It didn't feel like Sarcasm but more like a insult to are officers in uniform, But it your opinion of what you think is Sarcasm.

Well maybe you don't know his posting style like I do, but it was 'sarcasm'/absurdism. Anyone that thinks the rioters are better than the police in this case are insane.

Wouldn't surpise me much, but if in NYC, it would probably in Brooklyn. Manhattan doesn't seem like the riots would be tollerated for long since "most of the police force is there".

I won't say that, I mean look at what happen in the 03 blackout, everyone was pretty much normal no riots whats so ever. it was a big change from the 79 blackout, however they were in different situations.

Notice too that the London riots (so far) has not reach the tourist areas of Central and Downtown London. The spots being of course British Paraliment, Buckingham Place, The West End(Their version of Times Square/Thearte District)etc.

The London Police may need help from the British Military as the start of the2012 Olympics are just 10 months away since they can't contain these hoods.

I am sure Al-Queda or other terror groups is watching and planning an attack already as they did in July 2005. Hope it does not help but i won't surprised either.
