How the *beep* do I get rid of mice?

Ok, so here is the biggest disadvantage for me living on the first floor of an apartment building. It doesn't take much frigging hard work for mice to somehow eat through walls.

Also, my pathetic excuse for a neighbor trash their place, partying up all night... I've gotten into multiple heated verbal arguments with them about noise, partying, the pests they bring over, and even when I was there I saw mice crawling out under their furniture. Those friggin mice must have gotten their way to my apartment as well. Who the hell doesn't keep their expensive ass apartment clean? Those pricks *sneers*

Who knows a good way to get rid of these idiotic mice? Traps don't work. I've looked for any possible holes that mice can go through and got a repair guy to plaster and paint them. My doors are way too small to crawl under. I'm still wondering how the frick these pests got in and how the frick to get rid of them. Anyone knows? Any possible exterminators here who can help?

Another thing - posion is not a viable option at this time because my friends come over some of the time and they sometimes bring children over and I don't want to harm them in any way

I'm not at home enough and I don't have enough time to take care of it

Thats why people love cats they take of themselves. Just leave water & dry food and your good.

Don't forget cat litter. I have a cat for about a year and all the mice in my apartment is gone.

A cat is your best bet. When I was still living in the Bronx we had em, we got a cat and that was the end of it. A cat you dont need to take care of them. Just leave water and food and make sure it poops in the litter box and you set. Most shelters give cats away for free. Just buy one of those giant bags of food and some cat snacks and your problem is gone. As much as I hated cats I was happy for that cat. If you hate cats put that hate aside because they are good in a way.

A cat would probably be better; a snake will go after mice for food but if it's well fed you won't have as much luck with mouse-killing and if it isn't and it can't find a mouse it may decide to strangle you or one of your houseguests...

My apartment used to have a similar issue; we got a kitten ten years ago and ever since we haven't seen hide nor hair of mice. And cats don't just deal with mice. Roaches, water bugs, flies- if they can see it they'll probably kill it fairly quickly. Hell, she took down a couple of bats that came in through the top of the window and got lost. As far as cat care goes, you just have to feed them a couple times a day, leave some dry kibble out for them to snack on between meals, and change their litter every day or two. They mostly entertain and take care of themselves and while they love human attention they don't need it constantly.

As long as you don't have a Garfield for a cat, your mice problems will be gone. Of course I do hope that these are indeed mice and not rats. I've seen some really big rats in the subway of late. I used to love killing mice when I was younger but rats are another story. They're more like raccoons.

Check every single area of your home, thats mean - checking behind the sink, stove, and any other area that might've been overlooked. And yes, traps do work. You'll also need steel wool to stuff any holes you might have, and plaster over it.

I suggest this approach because this is how we got rid of about 98% of our problem. We may have one or two that finds it way somehow in the house, but not for long; and we're talking a timeframe of 'months'.

Mice. Not doubt about it. I've seen rats before and the ones I've been spotting are definitely not large enough to be rats

My questions to you are:

- what type of trapping are you using & where are you putting these traps

- how many mice do you think is roaming about your apartment? serious question....

if you have an infestation, no amount of trapping is gonna work...

- when are you seeing these mice

- where (of if, and in what quantity) do you see droppings.. any specific locations moreso than others?

- How easy are you making it for mice to obtain sustenance

You have to figure out where they're coming in..... Know that mice are blind & run along walls to "feel" their way through... If you see mice (or even ONE mouse) running around in an open area during the day, you are in trouble... b/c mice are nocturnal..... the rule of thumb is, for every mouse you do see, there are 5 more that you don't... that's the mindset you have to have to attack the problem.

On the subject of cats...

Someone made a reference to Garfield; good... b/c not all cats are good at hunting mice (running misconception) - glad someone made that implication.... Having a cat helps keeps mice out of sight... It's not really a remedy to getting rid of em if you already have em.... Havin them out of sight only makes the problem worse believe it or not.... any exterminator will tell you that....

Any exterminator that tells you to get a cat, you should not take seriously.... I would only call an exterminator in extreme circumstances.... When I first moved into this place, knowing what I knew, I had to let the "cat" out the bag (so to speak) in thinkin of every which way to combat the mouse problem here.... I remember the last set of mice I trapped.... those suckers drowned in a bucket of water.... all 12 of em.... haven't seen, or seen evidence of mice in this place since....

Never had a cat brought in this place...

Never paid an exterminator.....

Didn't have direct help from ANYONE.... thanks to what my grandfather taught me when I was a kid...

You have to want to be diligent in ridding yourself of the mouse problem first, then opt to get yourself a cat to help keep em out, if you want to go that route... Not the other way around.... Not ONE method of trapping is gonna work either... mice are smarter than people give them credit for....

Had similar problem sharing an apartment in Park Slope, Brooklyn with mice few years back with roommates.

Thankfully living now alone in upstate Ducthess County, NY instead of mice, dealing with issue of mosquito plague.:P

Gotten some nice bites as well from them during this very hot and wet summer. Still prefer the 'mosquito' problem instead of the mice.

Good luck handling it.

A. The traps are placed anywhere where I've seen them before, or places close to where I heard what I believe is the sound to squeaking or gnawing. Either that or my stupid neighbors are making retarded noises.

B. I can't tell. So far, I have seen two of them. I'm pretty sure there are more of them that I don't see. I'm just about desperate enough to start to get a exterminator on the phone. I have a fairly high hourly pay, and if an exterminator is the solution, so be it.

C. They are under furniture no doubt about it. I see them in the day some of the time when I shut the lights off to cool down and save energy.

D. Droppings.. eh usually about four or five pieces each time I find them. I see them on counters 99.9% of them time.

E. I've hired a plaster and painter to paint and fill in any hole I have been able to find, I just had a complete repaint of my bathroom a week ago to fix water damage caused by my retarded upstairs neighbors.

I've been working my ass off during my time off from work to figure out their entry point. I haven't been able to find any nests, entry points or anything. It's as if they sneak in through the door from the hallway or some BS like that. I can't here them run through the walls, and my pantries are clean and none of the plates or aluminum foil I store in there look like they have been bitten on.

I think one of my friends has two cats. I'll get in contact with her soon and ask about it.

Sounds like you need an exterminator for your upstairs neighbors !

A] Good chance that's your mistake, bro; putting traps where you hear them....

I find that plugging steel wool in cracks & putting sticky traps where you think possible entry points (plural) might be, is the best method of trapping IMO.... again, the sticky traps have to be along a wall for best results; you're wasting your time if you're putting traps in areas that aren't along walls or corners....

but yeh, poisoning & those snap traps are a complete waste of time & money.....

only negative w/ the steel wool is that they die in the walls... many a night I had to put up w/ the stench when I first moved here, but as long as I knew the lil bastards were dead, it was all good....

also, if you hear anyone tellin you to leave the lights on at night, that won't help.... mice will simply adapt to the lights being on in your house, which you don't want b/c you'll start to see even more of em in the daytime.....

C] have you tried moving said furniture to see if there are any entry points there?

D] that's where you typically find em.... if you're finding them in the same/similar spots (and nowhere else), then that makes your job that much easier in trapping them.....

If you do decide to get a cat(s), tell us if that works out for ya.
