lilbluefoxie Posted August 19, 2011 #1 Posted August 19, 2011 What is wrong with the R40 school car at Rockaway Park, it makes these eerie humming noises that change in pitch. Its not the usual idling noise that those older cars make.

R68 Subway Car Posted August 19, 2011 #5 Posted August 19, 2011 All trains that idle make humming noises. I am guessing that train was just used for school car when you saw it.
TwoTimer Posted August 19, 2011 #6 Posted August 19, 2011 Well she said its just the school car... One that typically isnt used at all as its out of the way for supervisors and hourlies alike. Most school cars are also modified as well.

It wasnt the usual sound that some of those cars make like the similar R42s or 32s, i guess cuz it was there a while doing nothing it mighta been making other noises. It sounded like the AC was running on it.
4P3607 Posted August 19, 2011 #8 Posted August 19, 2011 I saw it today, I would have taken a video of it but cops were there. It makes me wonder why the R40 is on, I thought they would have permanetly disabled it since it's a school car and it will never see movement or service again.
TwoTimer Posted August 19, 2011 #9 Posted August 19, 2011 Many of these school cars (slants in the case of CCY or this 40 at Rock Park or even the redbirds and classics at CI) are modified (not operationally) to be used as classrooms. They are chuck to the tracks and have been stripped mostly (so they cannot be moved under their own power). For instance, the school car slants in CCY have their cab heat and converter modified so it can provide heat for the whole car with a flip of a switch, without having to turn on the HVAC. They are permanently there as school cars, never to be moved again. They are not to be viewed upon as road ready (or road capable, for those that know the difference), or even compared to road cars, then or now.
lilbluefoxie Posted August 20, 2011 Author #10 Posted August 20, 2011 do they have actual desks and stuff inside or does everyone sit on the bench like they would if they were riding the train?
SubwayGuy Posted August 20, 2011 #11 Posted August 20, 2011 do they have actual desks and stuff inside or does everyone sit on the bench like they would if they were riding the train? yes the interiors are modified too. specifics of what's inside depends on what car.
TwoTimer Posted August 20, 2011 #12 Posted August 20, 2011 Usually 10-12 desks complete with chairs (or the combined versions) that takes up about half the car, the other half is an office with regular office fare. The original benches are still intact (and are often used to place our heavy bags) but the stanton poles are removed. Usually the wall has various signs and signals hung up (often used for signal quizzes), and a free standing replica of a home signal mast, automatic signal mast, and a low home signal mast (usually two of three).
