BYD Automobile Co. is marketing their K9 battery-electric bus in Canada through East Wind Group and Canadian Rail Collision and Refurbish. They plan to assemble the bus in Windsor. It was displayed in Vancouver this week and is apparently heading across the boarder according to a CPTDB member who spotted the bus. engineerboy6561 Posted August 21, 2011 Share #3 Posted August 21, 2011 Electric and PHEV technology is great, and according to an article I read the bus can charge halfway in half an hour and do 250-300km (156-187 miles) on a single charge. What the article didn't mention (but the comments did) was that BYD was threatened several times by A123 Systems (the guys behind the newer NG battery packs) with lawsuits, probably over proprietary tech. That said, by rights there should have been an American (or Canadian: NF, Orion, Volvo Group, etc.) bus that beat them to it. Ten to one there probably could have been had any of the NF E-series trolleybuses been fitted with battery packs as an option. Second of all, given the issues with toys, medications, etc. coming out of China I don't trust the thing not to turn into a potentially dangerous lemon a la the worst of the 870s. Ebus has plans to launch a 40 electric bus and is reportedly working with a Gillig low floor. Nova is developing an electric bus with fellow Volvo company Sunwin of China. The Quebec government hopes to demonstrate an electric bus by 2013. And announced this year, New Flyer is working with Mitsubishi on an electric bus.
