The Tram man Posted August 25, 2011 Share #1 Posted August 25, 2011 To be 100% honest, i don't know if this belongs here or in the Subway forum, but here i go: Have the ME-1 cars ever rolled on the BMT? Are there any pictures? If they did: How long did they roll there? Why were they there? Thanks in advance.
Fan Railer Posted August 25, 2011 Share #2 Posted August 25, 2011 To be 100% honest, i don't know if this belongs here or in the Subway forum, but here i go: Have the ME-1 cars ever rolled on the BMT? Are there any pictures? If they did: How long did they roll there? Why were they there? Thanks in advance. The BMT purchased 30 of these cars (25 motors and 5 trailers) in 1953. The trailers were intended as revenue collection cars, but were never converted. The motors were used on the Culver Line until 1961, and were scrapped the following year. The cars were purchased to ensure a sizable spare factor in the fleet as the system expanded greatly during those years (Culver Line, 60th street tunnel connection, Rockaway Line). http://www.subchat.com/readflat.asp?Id=1026831&p=1#1026921 http://thethirdrail.net/0201/sirt13.html http://www.thejoekorner.com/scripted-photo-display.shtm?http://www.thejoekorner.com/cars/bmtsirt.gif^SIRT%20car%20on%20BMT http://nycsubway.org/cars/bmtodd.html
Joe Posted August 25, 2011 Share #3 Posted August 25, 2011 They were awfully similar to the Steels already running there. Biggest difference for the motormen being the "normal" arrangement of master controller and brake stand (MC on left, BS on right.)

Joe Posted August 26, 2011 Share #5 Posted August 26, 2011 The Steels were pretty slow, even by rapid transit standards. 160HP per axle, IIRC; compared to 190HP per axle on an R1-9. Of course, Steels have an 1A-A1 arrangement as opposed to B-2 found on the ME-1s and R1-9s.
