mass production Posted October 3, 2011 Share #102 Posted October 3, 2011 Day 5 ( Day 4 Training ) Arrived at 9:00 at Quill I did ALSAPS practice test = passed I got to drive to 86 St ( I have to stop there I cant drive over the bridge needs my CDL) went to Soundview to do the EL pillars ( no problem ) Lunch then paralell park / backing up ( no sweat ) Did a pre trip practice = passed back at depot by 4:00 pm Have a great weekend  I've had my CDL Class B with Passenger/Tank Endorsement for 3 years got it from a driving school. Since I already have the CDL I don't have to go to DMV for a road test again, but still have to take the MTA road test since they want me to drive there way if I'm correct? Sort of like a crash course for me.

That is correct, but be advised that a school bus is not the same as a transit bus (RTS in particular) as the wheels are now behind you and if I'm not mistaken they are heavier as well. However, I am sure that if we open our ears and forget what we may have learned in the past we will do just fine!

Nothing to study its all about applying it at this point Half the manual is just bulletins regarding rules and regs.

Wow, I was under the impression that you all were given material that pertained to the training (i.e. making acute turns, hook turns etc...) to study on a daily basis. Yes, all of that is included in the manual. But everything you're going to be trained "hands-on", so no worries. And those bulletins given in the manual are good to read as well 'cause when you're on ya own, you'll need to remember some of the stuff. Trust me. prgordo Posted October 4, 2011 Author Share #110 Posted October 4, 2011 Day 7 (Day 6 Training) Arrived at 9:00 am at Quill Got to chat with the other class also at Quill They seem very unhappy their instructor is really hard on them compared to our's who's stern but he's more laid back and funny we still got our stuff done . Got on the bus my turn came at 12:30 pm Drove around Union Square up to 34th and down ( 50 min ) couple of times I turned and stayed on my left didnt go to my right other then that flawless ( Satisfactory ) Was told I have a big shot to pass tomorrow  P.S. Even if you know it they wanna see if you can handle the bus with confidence ,You will fail if you make any mistake ( To be continued )
Acela Express Posted October 4, 2011 Share #111 Posted October 4, 2011 That's good to hear, prgordo. Their main goal, actually, is to make sure you can handle the bus safely. You'll heard the word "safe" about 2 billion times between now and the time you're on your own, which should be in 3-4 weeks from now. Just take your time and show your instructor what you're made of. Tomorrow is definitely a big play date for everyone, and all you need to do is just apply the fundamentals taught, and you'll ace it. Make sure you avoid hitting the curb at all costs, or making any sudden dangerous moves. You'll be OK, bro.

Hit curb Parallel Parking ( curb is a no no ) Got caught red light in intersection, traffic ( didnt forward plan ) Got trolleyed ( not taking up right side space on a left turn ) FAIL Was told he could have passed me but feels I need more experience and told my new instructor to take care good care of me so tomorrow Grand Ave Depot for Day 8 training and Day 9 manhattan for shorter version of test. 4 guys in bus = 2 pass/ 2 fail
Acela Express Posted October 5, 2011 Share #116 Posted October 5, 2011 Ah, sorry to hear that. That's OK though - just focus through on Day 8 and 9 and you'll knock it out. Remember, you don't want to be extended into Day 10 which is the hardest for anyone, and you have to be beyond perfect to pass, in the instructor's eyes. Don't give 'em a reason to fail you. Do you have any weaknesses you've noticed yourself? Do you mind sharing 'em? Myself and other BOs may be able to give you tips on what you can do to change your tactics if you're not understanding them for your current instructor. And last but not least, don't freeze up; save your nervousness for the DMV road test, because it will be a bit worse. lol Just focus, that's all. I took it the first time there back in 2008 with a driving school. Failed it the 1st time, but the 2nd time was a charm. Don't worry you'll get it the next time. Question since I already have my CDL Class B I don't have to take the road test from DMV since I already have it, but take the MTA road test if I'm correct? No, prgordo is referring to the day 7 qualification during the 10-day initial training by Zerega. And yes, as long as you have your CDL Class B with "P" (passenger) endorsement, you don't have to take the DMV road test again. Your main testing is within the 7-10 day qualification window. Once you've passed, you enter line training until you graduate and receive badge and wheelchair key.

Thanks for the info, but I haven't been behind a wheel of a commerical bus since my road test in The Bronx back in 2008. When my time comes its going to be a crash course for me. What your saying is that the 7-10 day qualification period is for MTA's Road test only? I just get to take MTA's road test to drive there way. Acela Express Posted October 5, 2011 Share #121 Posted October 5, 2011 Day 7 is the earliest you can qualify; then, if not, you get one more day of training on Day 8, with a different instructor, then another qualifying shot on Day 9; if not, your last shot is on Day 10, which 2 Superintendents will be monitoring your performance instead of the 1. You can say your qualifying days are like MTA's "road test", just different terminology.
prgordo Posted October 5, 2011 Author Share #122 Posted October 5, 2011 I just need to apply what I learned my only weakness is experience I never driven a Bus of any kind before so im still learning timing is the key I need to focus on that but the instructors are very helpful there so much I could share if I had the time ............. "Getting your nose dirty" "Dont let them ( people ) drive your bus" "P.I.N or P.N.I" "Getting Fat" "Being Donal Trump" And so forth but to be honest you have to be there to understand

Locomotion69 Posted October 6, 2011 Share #124 Posted October 6, 2011 Tomorrow is the day that really counts for him. I think he will be all right. I wonder what he meant when he said "a shorter version of the test" for tomorrow(day 9). I figured you have to do the same thing over. I also wonder how much time he gets behind the wheel training today, would be ideal to have at least 2-3 hrs, the more time the better, you learn more by doing then by observing.
