Joel Up Front Posted September 8, 2011 Share #1 Posted September 8, 2011 I was riding the LIRR to Penn from Merrick in the spring and I sat down, but noticed this mounted on the wall: (Cell phone, did not want to attract too much attention so this is crappy, sorry) What is that? I've never seen that in any M7s before. Forgot the car number, sorry again.
Amtrak7 Posted September 8, 2011 Share #2 Posted September 8, 2011 I believed this used to be a "RailFone" (pay satellite phone), which were removed with the advent of cell phones. Not all cars have this.

Not all cars have this. That's correct. I think they actually scrapped the idea before the phones were installed, though. You'll only find this apparatus on the lower-number M7s. Amtrak7 Posted September 9, 2011 Share #4 Posted September 9, 2011 That's correct. I think they actually scrapped the idea before the phones were installed, though. You'll only find this apparatus on the lower-number M7s. I know for sure they were installed in the C3's, as an MTA video shows a passenger using one. Joe Posted September 13, 2011 Share #7 Posted September 13, 2011 Just imagine the phones were still installed...those late night fight specials would be held in the handicapped area with the receiver as the melee weapon of choice.
