Election night 2011

I hope 2012 is a quick year. Although expect the election and the end of the world going to be the most talked about things during that year.

Turner was sworn in today (usually in a normal Nov. election they take office on Jan. 1 the next year)as Congressman in Weiner's old seat.

However in about a year from now he will face an oppopent in likely a new congressional district created by redistricting.

Which kinda makes this victory a hollow one. At least he didn't need to spend too much money on the campaign compared to his rival.

I don't get these redistricting things.. they should just base it off the borders of 1-3 counties/boroughs and that's that.

Agreed Concourse. Sadly IMO redistricting every 10 years based on census for districts of congress is the worst form of partisan politics. Instead of your (concourse)idea it based on either of which of the 2 major parties controls the state goverment or who is in the Governor's office at time of redisticting. Thus why you have this strange congressional/state assembly seats particuarly in NY state.

You also forgot the key detail that the districts must comply with the federal Voting Rights Act, which ensures minority representation. One example of a strange Congressional seat is the 12th Congressional District. Represented by Nydia Velazquez, her district covers heavily Hispanic and Asian neighborhoods in Manhattan (Lower East Side and Chinatown), Queens (Woodhaven, Ridgewood, and Maspeth), and Brooklyn (Sunset Park, Red Hook, Bushwick, Williamsburg, Cypress Hills, and Greenpoint).
