Shortline Bus Posted August 9, 2012 Author Share #476 Posted August 9, 2012 Well I suppose they were trying to harken back to the pre-1993 days before they did their last realignment into six divisions. Pre-1993 there were four divisions not necessarily organized by geography but team original (NHL or WHL). But there was also four fewer teams (that the right count?). Correction pre-1993 they named the Divisions/Conferences named after historic figures in NHL history. For example the Campbell Western Conference was named after the Long Time NHL Comish in the 1950's-70's era.
Tokkemon Posted August 9, 2012 Share #477 Posted August 9, 2012 Quite, but they were still four divisions back then.
Shortline Bus Posted August 9, 2012 Author Share #478 Posted August 9, 2012 Since we talking hockey, shifting 24 years ago one of the biggest and most important trades/team transfers in world sports history occured. The Day Wayne Gretzky was traded from then Cup Champions Oliers to the LA Kings. This was August 9, 1988. Without this trade, the NHL does not expand oustide it's oringal US base in the Northeast/New England and Midwest. http://newyork.cbslo...hockey-forever/ Recent ESPN documentary '30 for 30" on Gretzy trade. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVL62QMAlpU
