this doesnt happen alot but they do send some (5) exp too gun hill RD where it makes its last stop. hey so do it help to have a sxp train to gun hill rd in the afternoon and evening?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxsgroluFX4&feature=feedu

Its not that uncommon, seems there there a few of these every PM rush hour heading uptown. I think to relieve congestion on the local track north of E 180th, with the 2 and Nereid Ave 5 trains.

Still not common enough to be worth putting on the map tho.

Video clip by me....

@Datedude. The (5) runs express on the WPR northern portion everyday. Like 4-5 trips. Ends at Gun Hill and heads str8 to 239th so it would back up the (2) heading to 241.

I haven't seen a 238th Local (5) in a while. Does NYCT know about this, or only Unionport does..?

yea i think its only union port tower because i do Auxiliary police at district 12 up at 180th and i dont think they say it too anyone else down at NYCT and yea i think its more (5) trains going exp too gunhil now after they finished the track work, its really because of the congestion at 180th and west farms

These are not scheduled runs, they are done at the dispatcher's discretion...otherwise all "super" 5s go local north of the East. However due to congestion several always seem to wind up getting this instruction every weekday.

Uh oh, you must work with another Aux who operates on the NYW&B.

At least one <5> train in 2006 went EXP to Gun Hill, then went LCL to 238.

In 2002 MTA would send everything local to 238 and 241, even when the (2), (3), and <5> would bunch up. If a (2) was behind a (3) and a <5>, the (2) could have had a long wait.

The <5> being late doesn't seem to be that big of a deal, since the <5> gets sent local below E 180 St when the (2) is delayed, while the (5) keeps running express.

Yeah almost all <5> will run Exp from E180 TO Gun Hill then discharge. They gone back to this since the Mgt on the (2) Line took over the (5) back in Aug. This is to cut down on daily congo line into Neried and Late Trains.

That sucks, getting on a 5 express to Nereid Av coming from Grand Central used to be highlight of the commute, 1 seat ride express in Manhattan and BX. Half the time when it says its going to 238th, at E 180 st they change their mind and go to Dyre. Now when they do go via WPR, they just go to Gun Hill and end. Unstable service wtf lol. Why don't they just rewrite the map then. The White Plains Rd line obviously cant handle the routes as is so why bother?

In my fantasy word the 2 would be the bx express oh well..

ANY late train is a big deal on ANY line. However when they need extra service on the local and reroute they charge it to whatever incident caused it. When you have Late trains because of conjustion its a problem that has to be addressed.

The <5> being late has a lesser effect (schedule wise) than the (5) being late being as the (5) has to return to Manhattan, while the <5> lays up. Lateness on the <5> can more easily be made up, lateness on the (5) can spill into the evening service.

The (2) being late because of the <5> is the bigger problem (from an operations standpoint).

There is padding on some schedules like the midday <6> schedule northbound, so a late <6> train of up to 4 minutes coming into 177 won't get to PBP late since on time and early trains are held.

Agreed. If these changes are happening then the MTA needs to place this in the map or else it ill confuse or get people angry. While I like the idea of an Express <5> via WPR Northern, i dislike that signs/maps/timetables still point that the <5> goes to 238th, rather i dont see a single <5> heading to 238th, rather Gun Hill M track and head to 239.

Tooo much crazy sh9t in the MTA... This is why they are hit with lawsuits for not managing certain areas well.

BTW does anyone know if the Morning <5>s out of 239th starts at 238th and goes local to 180th then express? Or does it start at Gun Hill?

I dont take it everyday like I used to, but I have seen the 5 run local on WPR to E 180th in the morning as of a few weeks ago...but most ppl just take the 2 and transfer at E 180th though, there is no guarantees when it come to rush hr 5 service on white plains.

When they turn on the countdown clocks it will be a big help in deciding if its worth waiting for a 5.

I also wish 5 express service has a larger window of time, by 815 or so WPR service is done, and express from Dyre ends soon after. I wish the express ran like the 6, all rush hour and even well into mid morning

There is padding on some schedules like the midday <6> schedule northbound, so a late <6> train of up to 4 minutes coming into 177 won't get to PBP late since on time and early trains are held.

<6>'s that fall behind are also commonly given skips to get up to PEL on time...a common one is a skip to Westchester Sq (skip Castle Hill/Zerega), or another one used when a train falls behind by noticeably more is Westchester, then straight to Pelham..

The (2) and <5> and (5) often have delays because of the logistics of switching trains at East 180th. In a perfectly laid out system, the Dyre tracks would be accessible directly from 2, 3, and M tracks at the East. However, they are not directly accessible to M track. Which is problematic because the Dyre (5) needs to go to/from M track in the peak during the rush. This means that a (2) and (5), cannot leave N/B (enter S/;) East 180th at the same time. This causes delays that affect following trains. Additionally, north of the East is off ATS, so Unionport Tower must ID each train individually.

Delays on both lines are common. It's common for trains during the rush to arrive at East 180th between 2 and 6 minutes late.

Since the supers are going to 238 and dropping out, because of the delays above and the impact on (2) service as a result, it often makes sense to send those trains express to Gun Hill instead. Since the (2)'s are by in large staying in service (2 layups drop out at 241 upon arrival anyway and are brought BACK to 239 yard) - the priority is to get those trains to the terminal on time so they can head back downtown on time...which obviously is difficult when the trains are ALREADY 2 to 6 minutes late...at East 180th.

The <5> as scheduled is local north of East 180th, and then express to 149th/3rd.

5 express service is not necessarily exclusively to provide a faster service, it's also to prevent delays by better distributing train traffic. Trains can bunch up very easily on lower WPR because of the curves south of the East, at E Tremont, 174th, and of course the one north of Simpson St. with the timer approaching.

The 5 express ends so early because it starts so early. The first 5 to go express is the first one out of Dyre that leaves after 6AM. The last one leaves the East just after 9AM. By then the worst of the rush is already over.

The last super <5> is around 815, but remember this isn't just to provide WPR service. It's a way of forcing in extra 5 trains to service the Lex when they are most needed (for the AM rush). This is why some 5's get sent to Utica is the resulting bevy of trains that need to be turned which Flatbush can't handle all by itself - and part of why it makes sense to lay up trains in Livonia Yard for the PM rush later, so that those trains can go in service, serve the crowded Lex corridor, and some trains can drop out at 238/WPR (or Gun Hill) without tying up 241's terminal capabilities.
