I don't have time right now to figure out the buses, sooorry. I might edit and do it later.

Reroute this trains.

Here goes (this assumes the (C) is still an eight-car, 480 foot train):

(1) runs in two sections:
South Ferry to 18th Street (local northbound, express southbound south of 14th Street)
42nd Street-242nd Street (while 34th Street-Penn Station is closed to passengers and is guarded by police, trains can use that station to turn)

(2) operates via the Lexington Avenue Line between Nevins St. and 149th Street

(3) operates in two sections:
New Lots Avenue-14th Street
Times Square-148th Street

Select (4) trains are extended to New Lots Avenue as needed.

(A) operates via 6th Avenue between 59th Street-Columbus Circle and West 4th Street, then normal route BUT as a local in Brooklyn

(B) and (M) are suspended

(C) operates normal route to 59th Street-Columbus Circle, then via the (D) to West 4th Street and the (M) to Metropolitan Avenue in Queens, where it terminates as it replaces the suspended (M) between Metropolitan and 47th-50th.

(E) operates via 6th Avenue between 53rd Street-5th Avenue and West 4th.

(G) is extended to 71st-Continental to replace the suspended (M) in Queens.

Assuming that this is post Myrtle Viaduct reconstruction.

Scenario 1

(B) service is limited

(D) via 8 Avenue and Culver (downtown)

(F) downtown trains via Broadway Express and West End

(M) Metropolitan - 71 via 8 Avenue and 53 St

Scenario 2

(A) trains run local from Canal St to 59 St Columbus Circle

Scenario 3

(G) trains terminate at 21 St or Greenpoint Ave

One thing I probably should have mention is that these three service changes are occurring simultaneously (once the second disruption occurs).

Also, the disruption at 34th is on the northbound. The reroutes should be given the existing (regular) service patterns.

I suspect the Broadway line would also be closed (but trains on the Broadway Line would be allowed to do switch moves) as those stations are on top of each other as they cross over at Herald Square.  Assuming that:

(A) operates in two sections:
207th Street to Columbus Circle
Canal Street to Far Rockaway or Rockaway Park (local in Brooklyn)

(B) (C) and (W) are suspended

(D) operates in two sections:
205th Street-Columbus Circle
West 4th Street-Coney Island

(E) operates between Jamaica Center and Lexington Avenue-53rd Street ONLY!!

(F) operates in two sections:
179th Street-57th Street
West 4th Street-Coney Island

Shuttle trains operate between

Select (G) trains operate between Church Avenue and Bedford-Nostrand ONLY (limited service to Court Square) with if necessary shuttle bus service to Court Square

(brownM) is re-routed to the Nassau Street line and runs via the (J) and then via Montague and replaces the (R) to 95th Street-Bay Ridge

(N) operates in two sections:
Coney Island to Canal Street (Tunnel Level) via the Tunnel
Times Square-Ditmars Boulevard

(Q) operates in two sections:
Coney Island to Canal Street (Tunnel Level) via the Tunnel
Shuttle between 57th Street and 96th Street

(R) operates between 42nd Street-Times Square and 71st-Continental ONLY (as the (brownM) replaces it in Brooklyn)

This is assuming the Broadway line is NOT affected...

On 6th Ave: The downtown local track is used as the downtown track for ALL trains, and the downtown express track is used as the uptown express track for ALL trains (between W4 and 42nd)

(B) Service reduced

(D) Normal express uptown, local downtown

(F) Normal local downtown, skips 14th and 23rd downtown

(M) Trains routed to Chambers St, change at Essex for (F)

(A) Local from Canal to 34th, Downtown normal

(E) Some trains begin/end at 34th St in order to alleviate congestion on the local tracks

(G) (Assuming the switches north of 21st also have problems)  - Select trains terminate at Bedford-Nostrand or Nassau Av, with limited service to Court Sq

I would think they'd be shutting power off to at least that entire section on 6th Avenue while making it so trains on Broadway are only supposed to go far enough to clear the switches and turn right around from there (as they would not want too much power being used on the Broadway Line).

Anyway, next up:
A water main break hits 14th Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues in Manhattan, knocking our service on the 4/5/6/L/N/Q/R/W in the area.

At the same time, the switch at West 4th going northbound is stuck all trains coming from Broadway-Lafayette on the "local" track MUST go via 8th Avenue or to go via 6th Avenue must switch to the express track on the switch immediately north of Broadway-Lafayette.

A power failure causes a fire to erupt in Whitehall St. The R line south of Rector St is unusable, as well as the New South Ferry station. (The Nassau St connection to Mountague is not affected by this.) The damage will take 2 months to repair. What do you do?

(R) becomes brown and is part of a split with the (J)(Z) in the following manner:

(R) runs 95th Street-Bay Ridge to Chambers Street, terminating on the "uptown local" track, then as quickly as possible is turned around and goes back to Brooklyn on the "downtown local" track at Chambers.

(J) and (Z) trains terminate and begin at Chambers Street on the "express tracks" at Chambers and run normal otherwise.

This service is at all times, though evenings and weekends, (R) trains are extended to Essex Street.

Whitehall Street, Rector Street, Cortlandt Street-World Trade Center and City Hall are all closed.

(M) trains run seven days a week to 71st-Continental.  When unable to run in Queens due to CBTC work, such trains run to 96th Street-2nd Avenue OR to 145th Street-8th Avenue.

Additional (N) trains run to Ditmars Boulevard-Astoria to replace the (W) (see below) and run local in Manhattan.

(W) trains operate from Canal Street (Tunnel Level) to 71st-Continental to replace the (R) on Queens Boulevard seven days a week. When unable to run there due to CBTC, such trains run to Astoria.

Yes, I know this was over a year old but I was bringing this up because someone posted a "what if" in the unplanned changes thread.

60th Street Tunnel needs to be closed for a Canarsie Tube-esc shutdown for a period of 2-3 years.

Keep in mind that while all the Astoria stations are usable, there is no B division yard access, and two years is a long time without heavy maintenance.

I would ahead of such if possible build a connection between the Crosstown Line (coming out of a new portal after Court Square, that would stop at a new above-ground Queens Plaza Station (with transfers to all lines that stop there) while otherwise taking over service to Astoria.  Queensboro Plaza would be closed during this time with all service taken over by the (G), running the new route to Ditmars Boulevard-Astoria that would become permanent even after normal service from 60th is restored if this new connection is built.

(R) service as part of this would run at all times regardless of whether a new connection is built.  If a new connection from the Crosstown can't be built, then you'd have a shuttle and find a way to swap trains as needed.

Maybe it'll use R142's (or it's special set of R62(A)'s.

239th Street/East 180th St Yards

Probably not. Maybe a few Platforms Lengthened and a few Stations removed

This was not the intention of this thread.

The intention was to draw up what you would do if a sudden emergency happens, including ones that take months that have nothing to do with the kind of cuts that have been discussed in recent posts.  What I'll post below is an example, this may or may not be a repeat of an earlier scenario written about:

A sinkhole develops in the area approaching the Atlantic Avenue (B)(Q) station.  It does NOT affect the rest of the Atlantic-Barclays complex as only that station is affected with all other tracks in the area available (including on the Fulton Street Line, (G), etc.)

NYC including All Five Boroughs would be a complete disaster we would depend on Local and Express Buses, Taxi, Cab and Van service, and use the Metro North and Long Island Trains.
