Subway - What If?

Recommended Posts

Another problem about the weather.

Due to very snowy conditions, an electrical failure near 14th Street - Union Square stalled all trains. The best thing was there were no passengers inside the trains but people are waiting at the platform and it's a rush hour. Reroute the (4)(5)(6)<6>(L)(N)(Q)(R) .

Quite a doozy there, not many places to turn around at lol

Assuming the stations can be used as terminals...

(4)...Woodlawn to 59 St via express

(6)...Pelham Bay to Grand Central

<6>...suspended

(5)...suspended

(L)...Union Sq to Canarsie

(N)...Whitehall to Coney Island, Times Sq to Astoria

(Q)...Prospect Park to Coney Island

(R)...via 6 Av/63 St local from Dekalb to 36 St

For missed Lex stations, take the M1, M2, or M3

For missed Broadway Stations, take the M1, M2, M3, M5, or M7

For missed 14 St stations, take the M14

Due to police investigations, Marcy Av through Myrtle Av (J)(M)(Z), and Chambers St to 34 St (A)(C)(E) are impassible. The impassible stations may not be used as terminals.

(A) trains run in two sections, Rockaways/Lefferts to Jay Street-Metro Tech local and 207th Street to 34th Street-6th Avenue (uptown express track)

(C) trains run from Coney Island to 168th Street via Brighton Express via bridge and 6th Avenue local then normal route.

(B) suspended.

(D) trains run 6th Avenue local from W4 to 34th.

(E) trains run from Jamaica to Lexington Avenue-53rd via Queens Blvd Local, for service farther in Manhattan take an (R) trains at Queens Plaza, or (6) at Lexington Avenue.

Some (R) trains short-turn at Whitehall to provide more service for the (E)

(M) train run as a shuttle from Central Avenue to Metropolitan Avenue.

(J) trains run in two sections, 95th to Essex (make up for the loss of (R) trains) and B'way Jct/ENY to Jamaica.

(Z) trains suspended.

due to another OWS movement, the following stations are deemed unsafe to enter:

Wall street (2)(3)

Wall Street (4)(5)

Broad Street (J)(Z)

Rector Street (1)

Rector Street (R)

Time: Weekday Rush hour

NO, trains cannot simply "pass through."

I'm going to assume a few things for this that will be noted:

(1) runs 242nd Street-Chambers Street ONLY

(2) runs in two sections:

241st Street-Chambers Street (local Times Square-Chambers Street) with LIMITED service to Park Place and Fulton Street.

Bowling Green-Flatbush Avenue, replacing the (5) Bowling Green-Nevins Street (trains can use the crossover north of Bowling Green for this)

(3) runs 148th Street/Lenox Terminal-34th Street/Penn Station ONLY

(4) runs in two sections:

Woodlawn-Brooklyn Bridge OR Fulton Street (trains run local south of 42nd Street)

Bowling Green-New Lots Avenue, running local and replacing the (3) in Brooklyn.

(5) runs Dyre Avenue-Grand Central ONLY

Single track shuttles runs in Brooklyn between Borough Hall (2) / (3) station and Nevins Street on both local tracks.

(J) and (Z) terminate at Fulton Street, some trains terminate at Chambers Street.

(R) runs Whitehall Street, Manhattan-95th Street, Brooklyn ONLY!

Edited to add:

Single-track shuttles operate on both local tracks of the Broadway (R) line between Canal and Cortlandt Street.

Since they can't just bypass the station, im assuming the stations are impassable...

(1)...242 St to Chambers St

(2)...241 St to 14 St

(3)...suspended

(4)...Woodlawn to Brooklyn Bridge, Bowling Green to New Lots via local

(5)...Dyre Av to East 180 St, Atlantic Av to Flatbush Av via local

(J)(Z)...Jamaica Center to Chambers St

(R)...via Bridge...every other train from Bay Ridge terminates at Whitehall St

Hoyt St will be closed as well

The general public will really hate the (MTA), they can blame OWS.

(1) trains run from 242nd to Chambers.

(2) trains run in two sections, 241st to 96th and Atlantic-Barclays to Flatbush Avenue.

(3) trains suspended go OOS, trains turn into (1) trains.

(4) trains run in two sections, Woodlawn to Brooklyn Bridge via local and loop, and from

(5) go OOS ASAP, (5) shuttle goes in service.

(R) trains via Bridge.

(J) / (Z) from Jamaica to Chambers, shuttle runs from chambers to fulton.

I'll throw another one in...

Due to shoddy work, the South Ferry station is flooded and trains can't enter not leave. Power is shut off south of where Cortlandt St once stood.

(2) Wakefield - 14 Street and Borough Hall (4)(5) to Fltabush

(3) suspended, re-sign as (1)s

Since this is a long-term change (I assume):

(1) Trains run to New Lots Av.

(2) Trains run local south of 34 St.

(3) No trains south of 14 St.

NEXT

Due to a collapse on the Myrtle Av EL between Central Av M and Metro Av M, it becomes impassible. Trains may not terminate at Marcy Av or Myrtle Av J/M/Z because it is rush hour, and due to a separate incident on 8 Av, select A/C/E trains are using 2 Av as a terminal at the moment.

Figuring this is going to be a long-term problem, going to do two parts for this (and don't you wish for this they still had the extra trackage at Atlantic Avenue on the (L) as that would help a lot):

Short term until the 8th Avenue Line problem is solved:

(C) re-routed via the (M) and then (J) West 4th-Broadway Junction, replacing the (M) West 4th-Myrtle Avenue.

(A) and (E) service runs normal in Manhattan

(A) runs local in Brooklyn.

For Spring Street from the (C), please make a same-platform transfer to the (E) at West 4th or before. For points south of Spring Street, please take the (A).

(G) is extended to 71st-Continental to replace the (M) in Queens.

(M) is suspended.

Once the 8th Avenue Line problem is solved:

(M) runs Broadway Junction (J) station-71st/Continental

All other services run normal.

Send them to Broadway Junction. Can't turn them at Essex St, given the layout from the cut to the station.

Eh, I'll bite...

- obviously shuttle buses for the M on Myrtle Avenue

- some Middle Village-bound trains to Broadway Junction; others to Church Av via Culver until 8th Avenue incident is cleared or rush hour ends (which ever one comes first), then alternating Ms to 2 Av.

I didn't want any trains going into 2 Av, but fine, I'll give it to you today.

Due to switch problems, Coney Island bound (D) and (N) trains are forced to run on the Brighton Line. Again, because of an incident on 8 Av, southbound select (A)(C)(E) trains are terminating at 2 Av.

You're supposed to give a scenario about which stations are closed. You provided a solution; what am I supposed to respond with to this?

How on Earth is this a solution?

I am pretty sure it was you who said something about the switches on the CPW Local being in favor of the Concourse, the Express to UWS.

How to solve it? Use your brain.
