Subway - What If?

Recommended Posts

I honestly don't see the problem. They can terminate at Franklin just fine.

As for the (4)(5), short turn them at Sterling St and Beverly Rd.

Next: Due to long-term construction the CPW express tracks are not usable. (This applies from 125th St, to just after the first local/express switch north of 59th)

At the same time, due to budget costs, the southbound local (C)(E) track is disconnected, from Canal Street, to just after the 8th Ave/6th Ave connecter @West 4th.

Make a LONG-TERM plan for the above.

And while the above is occurring, work is being done at 14th St, and 34th St, so the southbound local (C)(E) track is not usable at those stops ONLY.

Southbound (A) trains must also bypass 14th, and 34th Sts.

Make a SHORT-TERM plan for the above.

1st one, (C) suspended, (A) and (D) trains via local. (E) trains run 8th Avenue express and run Fulton Local to Euclid using some of the (C)'s R32's. (A) to Rock Park is cut.

Short term plan: (E) s/b via 6th Avenue local via (F) to Jay-Metrotech where the (E) continues to Euclid.

(B)?

The (B) would still run, you can squeeze the (A)(D) and (B) on one track. Same with me.

I got one that's non-fiction!

Due to a landfalling hurricane, all the underriver tubes to Brooklyn (14st/Rutgers/Cranberry/Montague/Clark/Joralemon) are flooded. Trains have been stored on all the express tracks around the system. Brighton line between Prospect Park and Atlantic have been used for layups.

Have fun :(

Call a shutdown on the Subway due to the unknown strength capability of the hurricane. Done.

Not certain when the East River tunnels will be back, but here goes.

(2) / (3): runs in two sections. Manhattan/Bronx: Wakefield/148th St - 34th St. Brooklyn: Atlantic Ave/Nevins St - New Lots Ave/Flatbush Ave.

(4) / (5): no service between Bowling Green and Brooklyn.

(6): normal service.

(7): Express service suspended, no service between Queensboro Plaza and Times Square.

Times Square (S): Runs overnight.

(A): Runs in two sections. Manhattan: 207th St - WTC Local. Brooklyn/Queens: Jay St/Metrotech - Lefferts Blvd Local. Rockaway service suspended.

(C): suspended.

(E): normal service.

(B): normal service, should run overnight until some of the tunnels are restored.

(D): normal service.

(F): Runs in two sections. Queens/Manhattan: 179th St - 2 Ave. Brooklyn: York St - Coney Island.

(J) / (Z): Normal service.

(L): Turn at Lorimer St.

(N): Normal service, though the Sea Beach line did flood pretty badly earlier today.

(Q): Normal service.

Let's hope nothing bad happens at DeKalb Ave, because if service is suspended there, no one is getting from Brooklyn into Manhattan.

Due to electrical problems, trains may not enter or terminate at 36 St D/N/R and Prospect Park B/Q. The Franklin Av Shuttle S remains unaffected however.

(Note: This assumes we are back to full normal service post-Sandy with all east river tunnels and otherwise being back to normal and no Sandy-related suspensions)

(B) operates Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center (D) platform to 145th Street OR Bedford Park Boulevard.

(D) runs in two sections:

9th Avenue to Coney Island via regular route

Coney Island to Broadway-Lafayette via the Culver line (peak-direction express between Avenue X-Church Avenue, express in both directions between Church Avenue and Jay Street).

Select (F) trains operate via the (G) between Church Avenue and Queens Plaza before resuming regular route to accommodate the (D)

(N) operates in two sections:

Ditmars Bouelvard, Queens to Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center, Brooklyn via express in Manhattan (stops at DeKalb Avenue)

59th Street-Coney Island (for Manhattan from these stations, transfer to special (D) trains or (F) trains not diverted to the (G)).

(R) operates in two sections:

Jay Street-Metrotech, Brooklyn to 71st Street-Continental, Queens

59th Street-95th Street, Brooklyn

(Q) runs in two sections:

Whitehall Street (R) station, Manhattan-Ditmars Boulevard, Queens via local in Manhattan (regular length trains)

As a 300' train from Coney Island to the Botanic Garden (S) station, terminating on the Prospect Park-bound (S) track.

Franklin Avenue (S) runs as a single train operating in both directions between Franklin Avenue and Botanic Garden on the Franklin Avenue-bound track.

Shuttle buse operate between Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center and 59th Street. For Prospect Park and the Brighton line, take (2), (3), (4) or (5) to Franklin Avenue-Botanic Garden and change to special (Q) service there.

This is very stupid. So you can't just short turn the (Q) at Kings Highway and provide shuttle buses between DeKalb Avenue and Kings Highway on the Brighton Line? And why should the Franklin Avenue Shuttle run as a single train on one directional track? You know how much crowding and delays that will cause? And as for the (Q) running as shorter trains, that's just a no-no...

Better that than what happened when the (Q) got knocked out by the fire at DeKalb. The (S) was overwhelmed that time by people who had the take the (2) / (3) / (4) / (5) to Franklin Avenue-Botanic Garden and switch to the (S) there.

In that scenario, the (Q) would be a 300' train because I believe that is all that can fit onto the platform at Botanic Garden on the (S).

They probably should extend that side of the station. It used to be 8 cars like the rest of the BMT, and I'm not sure if it could go 10 cars, as it then reaches the overpass to the next street. It might be very narrow.

I've suggested that for complete Manhattan Bridge shutdowns. It would be nicer to use the new connection to the IND instead, though, but there is space to extend Franklin also (It would extend all the way across Atlantic).
