Subway - What If?

New York City is under a tropical storm watch right now for Hurricane Jose and it is supposed to start tomorrow night. A lot of the suggestions being posted here may come true depending on how fast (or slow) this storm moves during the week.

I am hoping and praying that the storm stays far enough out to sea and we escape the brunt of this storm.

Brooklyn Bridge–City Hall is flooded. Try again.

If South Ferry/Whitehall Street floods, so does the Montague Street Tunnel because gravity. I guess that should have been mentioned explicitly like I did with the Cranberry Street Tunnel and Joralemon Street Tunnel.

That's why I said that.  When I do this, I make sure I include that because you never know, as even if logic dictates one thing, stranger things have happened.

Some MAJOR long-term changes here (these assume there are enough cars to handle such).

With Clark, Montague and Rutgers still running, here's how I would do it:

(1) replaces the (3) south of 14th Street (running normal to Chambers St.) and runs to New Lots Avenue at all times.

(2) runs local between 96th and Chambers Street, normal route otherwise

(3) is truncated to 14th Street at all times

(4) and (6) are both truncated, run local at all times and terminate at all times at Grand Central (some 6 trains terminate at 59th Street)

(5) runs between Dyre Avenue and 125th Street ONLY at all times (including late nights)

Shuttles run on the Lexington Avenue Line tracks south of Grand Central as follows and are designated S :

Local between Grand Central and 14th Street on the downtown local track, return to Grand Central going uptown on the downtown express track.

Single track between 14th Street and Canal Street on the Uptown Local Track in both directions.

(A) DOES NOT operate in Manhattan and does operate between Jay Street-Metrotech and Lefferts Boulevard as a local at ALL TIMES.

(B) becomes a seven-day-a-week line, re-routed north of 125th Street to 168th Street (except late nights).

(C) takes over full-time operations in Manhattan from 207th Street (local at ALL TIMES) and then via the Broadway-Brooklyn line south of West 4th Street to Broadway Junction, where it terminates (NOTE: Runs peak-direction express on the Broadway-Brooklyn line).

(D) is unaffected unless there are car shortages.

(E) is the only train south of West 4th on the 8th Avenue line in Manhattan.

Select (F) trains during peak periods run via the Crosstown between Roosevelt Avenue and Bergen Street.

(G) is extended to 71st-Continental (late nights to Queens Plaza).

The post-Sandy (H) is brought back in the Rockaways.

The (K) is brought back as an Express Shuttle between Utica Avenue and Howard Beach-JFK Airport (and if there is enough capacity to do so, such can run between Jay Street and Howard Beach and if so also as a local)

(J) is truncated to Chambers Street at ALL TIMES (no (Z) service during this time and no peak-direction express service).  If there is lack of car availability in other divisions, if needed it can be extended to Coney Island depending on which line is the most hurt by lack of car availability.

(brownM) returns to being brown and runs Metropolitan Avenue to 95th Street-Bay Ridge at ALL TIMES

(L) runs normal service.

(N) and (Q) operate via the Bridge south of Canal Street at ALL TIMES.

(R) operates from Canal Street (Tunnel Level) to 71st-Continental ONLY!

Assuming Montague Street is ALSO flooded (I did this thinking the Nassau side would NOT be), here's how I would do it:

Unless otherwise noted below, the changes above remain as-is:

(J) STILL is truncated to Chambers (as Fulton and Broad Street also would be likely having Flooding since it would appear only the 2/3 station there would be unaffected).

(M) operates normal service with that expanded to seven days a week.

What If an (R) train breaks down between Whitehall and the East River, at the same time, someone hijacks a (6) train at Grand Central, while another service change happens on the Astoria line (let's say an incident). Last but not least an (A) train breaks down at either between Euclid and Grant or Rockaway Blvd and the RBB southern portion. Reroute trains

Here goes:

Broadway-Brooklyn is a long-term closure as there likely is major damage to that.  This likely means:
(J) runs from Alabama Avenue-Jamaica Center ONLY!!  If Broadway Junction can handle trains, such terminate there.
(Z) becomes a shuttle in Manhattan between Broad and Essex Street.

As for the rest:
(E) runs between 71st-Continental and Jamaica Center ONLY!!

(F) runs in two sections:
Coney Island to Queensbridge Plaza
71st-Continental to 179th Street

(L) Runs 8th Avenue-Atlantic Avenue with some trains terminating at Myrtle Avenue or Broadway Junction

(M) Runs regular route to 47-50th Streets, then via the (F) to 63rd/Lex and (Q) to 96th Street-2nd Avenue, where it terminates.

(R) runs with the (N) to Astoria.

(W) is suspended due to the (R) running to Astoria.

I’m amused that you feel the need to run the (M) in this situation, but suspend the (W).

A realistic and difficult scenario:

During AM rush, a Brooklyn-bound (2)  train breaks down over the junction south of 145 Street. (3) trains from 148 Street and the yard are blocked. The (2) train is followed by several other (2) trains behind it in the tunnel stretching to 149 Street–Grand Concourse. Manhattan-bound (5) trains cannot enter 149 Street–Grand Concourse due to the blockage.

Due to a fallen customer customer at 137 Street–City College, Bronx-bound (1) trains must run express from 96 Street to 157 Street on the express track as paramedics arrive on the scene.

Signal malfunctions at 7 Avenue ((B)(D)) are cause severe delays in Brooklyn-bound service.

  1. Reroute the trains already in service.
  2. Order proper service changes.
  3. Offer alternatives to affected passengers.

You can't run the (D) on 8th ave without having to terminate it in Manhattan somewhere -- no way to access exp tracks south of W4

^where exactly is the broken rail at Court St? In the station on one of the tracks, on the crossover, between Court St and Jay St? And how exactly is the switch problem affecting the Whitehall St Station? Is the switch stuck on a articular position? And are all switches affected and in what way?

Obviously expect extensive delays

Take that (B) out of service and suspend (B) and (W) service

Wrong railing on the (N) and (R) causing massive delays

(Q) between 96 and Canal bridge

And from Atlantic Av - Coney Island

(D) Norwood - Second Avenue. And Atlantic Av - Coney Island

(N) runs local

Here goes:

(B) and (W) are suspended entirely.

In Manhattan:
(C) is truncated to between Chambers-WTC and 168th Street
(D) runs from Norwood-205 via the (A) after 59th Street to Euclid Avenue, replacing the (C) in Brooklyn

(N) and (R) both terminate at Canal Street (Tunnel Level) in Manhattan from their northbound terminals.
(N) is Local in Manhattan

(Q) only runs between Herald Square-34th Street and 96th Street.

In Brooklyn:
(D) runs via 4th Avenue Local with the (R) to Jay Street-Metrotech, where such terminate (assuming the rail condition is near the Court Street station). Transfer between the two (D) trains at Jay-Metrotech.

(N) runs from Coney Island to 36th Street-4th Avenue ONLY!

(Q) runs from Prospect Park to Coney Island ONLY!!

It doesn't make sense to close the whole bridge, but I will have 3 scenarios.

If north side is closed:

(B) and (W) suspended.

(Q)  in two sections: 96th-Canal (tunnel) and Prospect Pk-CI.

(R) via bridge.

(N)  local in Manhattan.

(D) via Rutgers. Shuttle between 36th and CI.

If south side is closed:

(B)  and (W) suspended.

(D) is normal.

(F)  is normal.

(M) rerouted to Chambers.

(N)  and (R)  terminate at Canal (tunnel).

(Q) via 6th Av and replaces (R) in Brooklyn.

If both sides close:

(B) , (R) and (W) suspended.

(N) local in Manhattan, terminates at Canal. Shuttle on Sea Beach.

(R) terminates at Canal. Shuttle between 36th and CI via 4th Av Lcl.

(Q)  96th-57th. Shuttle between Prospect Pk and CI.

(D) truncated to 145th St. Shuttle between Atlantic and CI, 4th Av Lcl.

I'm guessing the switch problem is the southbound crossover before entering Mountague in Whitehall.

(B) - via (C) to Euclid Avenue

(C) - Suspended

(D) - via West 4th St to Culver, 6th Avenue Local

(F) - via CROSSTOWN

(R) - via 6th Avenue Express

(W) - Reduced Service to Whitehall. 36th St-Dekalb Ave

(N) - Astoria-Whitehall St and Atlantic-Barclays to Coney Island.

(Q) - 96th St to Canal St, Atlantic-Barclays to Coney Island.
