I'm going to for this purpose assume no trains on 6th can go past 14th:

(1) operates in two sections:
As a limited service shuttle between South Ferry and Chambers Street (one train operates on each track in both directions).
Between 34th Street-Penn Station and 242nd Street

(2) runs as follows:
Some trains from Brooklyn terminate at Chambers Street
Some trains from The Bronx terminate at 34th Street-Penn Station OR Times Square
Some trains operate straight through via the (5) between Nevins Street and 149th Street

(3) operates in two sections:
New Lots Avenue-Chambers Street
34th Street-Penn Station OR Times Square to 148th Street-Lenox Terminal

Some (4) trains are extended to New Lots Avenue or operate to Flatbush Avenue if necessary to accommodate the loss of some (2) and (3) service

(B) operates normal route between Coney Island and West 4th Street ONLY!

Some (C) trains operates express on 8th Avenue between Canal Street and 59th Street-Columbus Circle OR 145th Street

(D) operates as follows:
Some trains operate from Coney Island to West 4th Street ONLY!
Some trains from Coney Island run via 8th Avenue Local between West 4th and 59th Street
Some trains operate between 34th Street-6th Avenue and 205th Street ONLY (normal service Central Park West)!

Some (E) trains operates express on 8th Avenue between Canal Street and 42nd Street

(F) operates as follows:
Some trains from Coney Island terminate at West 4th Street
Some trains from 179th Street terminate at 34th Street
Some trains operate between Coney Island and 179th Street via the (G) between Bergen Street and Roosevelt Avenue.
Some trains operate between Coney Island and 179th Street via the (E) between West 4th and Roosevelt Avenue

(L) terminates at Union Square

(M) operates via Nassau between Essex and Chambers Street

How does the plan affect (B) and (D) service? They may pass through 14th, but are not affected.

The WTC has been attacked again, and the damage is much more extensive.

Areas Destroyed:

Cortlandt St 1

tracks between Chambers St A/C and Fulton St A/C

WTC E (including relay tracks north of the station)

Cortlandt St R/W

Here goes:

(1) runs 242nd Street-Van Cortlandt Part to Flatbush Avenue via Clark Street after Chambers at all times

(2) runs local south of Times Square and is rerouted to New Lots Avenue at all times

(3) runs Chambers Street-148th Street (late nights to Times Square)

(4) no longer runs late nights to New Lots Avenue since the 1 & 2 both operate in Brooklyn at all times.

(R) runs in two sections
Canal Street (Tunnel Level) to 71st-Continental (at all times).
Whitehall Street to 95th Street-Bay Ridge

(W) runs on a limited basis between Canal Street (Tunnel Level) and Ditmars Boulevard.  Trains going on yard runs go to or come from the Bridge Level at Canal Street and run to or come from Kings Highway via the Bridge.

Until new switches can be built north of Canal Street on the 8th Avenue Line to allow for track switches:

(A) operates in two sections:
207th Street-34th Street (except late nights)
High Street to Rockaway Park (all times) or Lefferts Boulevard (all times except late nights) via local

(C) replaces the (M) (which is temporarily suspended) between Metropolitan Avenue and West 4th and runs between Metropolitan Avenue and 168th Street at ALL TIMES, extended late nights to 207th Street.

(E) runs from Jamaica Center to 34th Street-Penn Station at all times with some trains continuing to 14th Street (skipping 23rd Street)

(G) is extended to 71st-Continental to replace the (M) in Queens (except late nights when it would run to Queens Plaza since the (R) would be 24/7 in this scenario)

Once track switches north of Canal Street are built to allow for switches there:

(A) operates in two sections:
207th Street-34th Street-Penn Station with LIMITED express service to 14th Street (late nights extended to Canal Street via local)
High Street to Rockaway Park (all times) or Lefferts Boulevard (all times except late nights) via local

(C) operates from Canal Street to 168th Street at all times (except late nights)

(E) operates from Canal Street to Jamaica Center

(G) and (M) resume normal service.

A Coney Island Bound (D) train derails at 42nd St-Bryant Park, smashing into the support beams in the tunnel and eventually crashes into the wall on the northbound track. This causes structural instability on the entire 6th Avenue Line from 14th St to 57th St, and it will take at least a week to repair the damage.

Reroute away!

86th St (N) (including switches south of the station)

Ocean Parkway (Q)

Ave X Yard (including all access tracks)

Coney Island Yard (including all access tracks)

Stillwell Ave Yard (including all access tracks)

Solution:

(A) - Inwood - 207th St to Ozone Park - Lefferts Blvd or Howard Beach - JFK Airport

(S) - Far Rockaway - Mott Ave to Rockaway Park - Beach 116th St via Hammels Wye

(B) - Bedford Pk Blvd to Kings Hwy

Long term solutions

(1) Runs between 242nd and Chambers.

(A) All Times: Jay St - W4 via Rutgers, (F) . Trains run local between W4 and 34th.

Weekdays: Runs express on Fulton, but service slightly reduced for (C) @ Rutgers

Weekends & Late Nights: No express service, runs local on Fulton

From 34th St to Canal St, the Northbound express track is used as a Southbound track

(C) All Times: Some/all trains run between Canal St and 168th St. Southbound (C) trains skip 23rd St and Spring St.

Weekdays: 75% of trains run to Euclid Ave via local, 25% to Canal

Weekends: Trains run only between Canal and 168th

(F) Rush Hours: Some trains routed via the (G) to provide capacity for (C) trains to use Rutgers

(E) 34th - Jamaica. Use (C) in lower Manhattan.

High St, WTC, Chambers and Fulton are closed. No shuttle buses provided, as High St is really close to York (A)(F), and (2)(3) as replacement between Fulton and Chambers

(R) Runs only in Manhattan, from Canal St to Forest Hills, in Brooklyn replaced by:

(J) extended to Brooklyn via Montague & 4th Avenue all times, increased service

(W) Suspended

Scenario 2:

(2) Wakefield - Wall St, Eastern Pkwy - Flatbush

(3) 148th St - South Ferry, Eastern Pkwy - New Lots

(4) Woodlawn - Borough Hall, use (3) in Brooklyn

(5) Eastchester - Bowling Green all times (weekdays), use (2) in Brooklyn

Shuttle buses provide service to Clark - Borough Hall - Hoyt - Nevins - Atlantic - Bergen - Grand Army Plaza - Eastern Pkwy

(B) Suspended

(Q) CI - Prospect Park, Canal St (from (R) platform) to 96th St

(N) CI - 59th, using switches just beyond the portal for switching, Whitehall St - Astoria, local in Manhattan

(R) 95th St - 36th St shuttle, Whitehall St - Forest Hills

(D) CI - 36th, 2nd Ave - 205th

No 8 Av Exp connection to the 6 Av Local at W4. You need to swap the C and D.

Following a major Earthquake in Brooklyn, the whole Myrtle Avenue elevated has collapsed onto the street below, and rebuilding will take at least a year.

What do you do with the (M)?

You spend billions on a pointless underground line because the NIMBYs said "How dare you rebuild that ugly el, I want a underground line that will cost a ton that I will complain about and criticize the MTA for even though I asked for it"

Maybe this thread should be spun off into a “ridiculous what-if” thread. A typical collision with tunnel structures takes under a week to inspect and remedy. Service may even resume within 24 hours. Now there’s a train that can cause enough damage to destabilize the structure a mile down and a mile up the tunnel without affecting any intervening structures in between (like the PATH, 14 Street tunnel, and 53 Street tunnel)? What about the street and buildings that sit above the tunnel? And this can all be fixed in at least a week…

Or punish them by giving them ZERO transit what so ever,

Wait, wouldn't the buildings be destroyed too?

Let me try an actual scenario...

Breaking News!

Due to a recent hurricane both the East New York and Jamaica Yards have suffered significant damage. Most of the subway cars are in good shape but there is no way to get them out due to fried third rails, track destruction, and structure damage. How do you reduce and change service in order to satisfy demand? (Lets say there were 10 trains stuck at ENY and 15 at Jamaica)
