I'll get this thread going again:

 

There are incidents on the Broadway Line between 34th and 42nd Streets and on the 8th Avenue Line at 23rd Street. No trains can pass either area.

 

No single-tracking, etc.

 

What would you do?

 

(A): Trains run in 2 sections.

1. Between 207th St & Lower East Side-2nd Av (F) via 6th Av. Makes all (C) stops between 59th St & 168th Sts.

2. Between Canal St & Far Rockaway/Lefferts Blvd. No Express Service. Express provided by (D)(Q) Only.

(;): Service suspended.

(C): Service terminated at Canal St.

All trains depart from Downtown Platform.

(E): Service rerouted to (F) and terminate at Lexington Av-63rd St.

(F): Rerouted via (M) line during this time.

(N):

Train runs in 2 sections.

1. Between Astoria-Ditmars Blvd & Queensboro Plaza.

2. Between 57th St (F) &. Coney Island-Stillwell Av via 6th Av Line

All Brooklyn-bound (N) leaves from downtown side.

(Q): Rerouted over to (:P line to 47th-50th Sts, then on (F) to 57th St.

All trains leaves from Queens-bound platform.

(R): Manhattan-bound trains run on

Free Shuttle Buses provided

How do (N) trains operate to Herald Square? They can't turn around - remember that the switch is in the problem area.

 

And how would West 4th Junction handle the (A)(E)(F)(R) all at once?

 

then you cut the (N) to Pacific and have the (D) run local. W 4 will actually be having only 1 train use the switch witch would be the (A) going from 6 Av back onto 8 Av. the (E) is staying on the (F) to 2 Av while the (R) is staying on the (D) all the way into Brooklyn

Here is a new situation: You get a huge grant from some international mass transit group. After using about 3/4 to finish current capital projects (such as the Second Ave Subway, all phases) what shall you do with the remaining 1.5 billion dollars? (This is not very realistic, but it is a "What If?" thread.) The changes you make can only benefit subway service, and MUST benefit the outer boros in some way.

Here's my solution:

 

(A) No service between Chambers St and 34 St - Penn Station.

(;) Service suspended.

(C) No service between Chambers St and 34 St - Penn Station.

(D) No changes.

(E) Runs via (F) between 5 Av - 53rd St and West 4 St.

(F) Runs via (E) between Roosevelt Av and 5 Av - 53rd St.

(M) No service between Broad St (J)(Z) and Continental Av.

(N) No service between 57 St and Whitehall St (R).

(Q) Runs via (D) between Dekalb Av and 47/50 Sts, then via the (F) to 36 St (Queens), then via the (M) to 71 Av.

(R) Runs via the (D) Pacific St to 47/50 Sts, then via the (F) to 36 St (Queens).

then you cut the (N) to Pacific and have the (D) run local. W 4 will actually be having only 1 train use the switch witch would be the (A) going from 6 Av back onto 8 Av. the (E) is staying on the (F) to 2 Av while the (R) is staying on the (D) all the way into Brooklyn

 

There would be a place (between the 6 Av switches and the flying junctions) where the (A)(E)(F) would all share one track. That would be a disaster.

This is better. (It keeps the Brighton Line running while keeping both locals on CPW)

(Q) Suspended.

(R) Runs via the (D) Pacific St to 47/50 Sts, then via the (F) to 36 St (Queens).

 

IMHO this is the best option.

C trains run a reduced frequencies

S/B A runs on 6th Ave line from 59 st to W 4 st

S/B C all local stops, running on express tracks from 34 st to 14 st

S/B E express A stops, from 59 st to W 4 st

N/B ACE normal service

 

6th Ave Line

M service suspended between 2nd Ave & Forest Hills

N/B D runs on 8th Ave line from W4 to 59 st (While B is running; late-nights, weekends, normal service)

N/B B normal service

N/B F runs express from W4 to 34st, select F trains run local on Queens Blvd.

S/B B,D,F normal service

S/B A runs local in place of M

 

Broadway Line

Q service suspended north of Canal Street

N in two segments:

 

 

local in Brooklyn runs through Whitehall terminates at Canal Street Local

 

 

 

runs from 42nd Street express to Astoria-Ditmars

 

R in two segments:

 

 

shuttle from 59 st to 95 st in Brooklyn

 

 

 

runs from 34th Street local to Forest Hills

(R) - reduced service; rerouted via 63rd Street, 6th Ave, Manhattan Bridge

 

If there is limited space on 6th Ave, some (F)s via Crosstown.

A fire ignites in West 4th St station and the entire station is shut down for two weeks.

 

Try to run as many services through (i.e. not in two sections) as possible. Be creative.:tup: Of course, be realistic (e.g. no bus replacement over any significant area).

Under this plan all trains bypass W.4 street

The (A) in both directions will run along the (F) from Jay Street to 59 street as well as run local south of Bdwy Laffayette

The (:P will run local along 6 Avenue and be extended to 205 street all times as well as terminating at 34 street

The (C) will be suspended

The (D) will only operate only between 34 street to Coney Island

The (E) will terminate at 2 Avenue via 6 Avenue Express/53 street Local

The (F) will run normal with selected trains running south of Kings Highway and selected trains running along the (G) from Bergen Street to Court Square-23 street

The (M) would operate between Metropolitan and Marcy Avenues only

 

 

Okay, so What if there was a big fire at 145 street burnt most of the station. What would you do.

 

 

*NOTE: The tracks are burnt as well

The (M) would operate between Metropolitan and Marcy Avenues only

1. How would the (C)(D)(E) changes work without interfering with service?

2. The station tracks are also impassable.

(A) trains run 125 Street-Mott Avenue. Local in Manhattan and express in Brooklyn. For 135 Street, transfer to the (2) at 59-CC.

 

(C) trains run from 207-168 Streets. For 163 st, get off at 168 street and walk. For 155, transfer to the (1) at 168 st and take the 1 train to 157 st. For access to the (A) train, transfer to the (1) train at 168 Street and take that 1 train to 59-CC.

 

(:P train runs as a shuttle in The Bronx 205-161. Transfer to the (4) for Manhattan service or take the (4) to 149-GC for (2) service to Lenox/7th Avenue service.

 

(D) trains run from 59CC-Stillwell. For Service to the Bronx, transfer to the (2) train at Columbus Circle.

 

(E) trains are extended to Euclid Avenue and run local in Brooklyn.

 

(2) trains run local in Manhattan.

 

Well I tried I don't know if that works.

The (:) will run south of W.4 extended to Coney Island via Brighton Express

The (C) is suspended

The (D) runs north of 34 street only

The (E) will run local in Queens

The (F) will run via 8 Avenue Local to W.4 street then (D) route fully local to Coney Island (Stops on local tracks at DeKalb Avenue and at Atlantic Avenue)

The (G) will be extended to Coney Island

The (R) will be rerouted via 53 street 8 Avenue Local and along the Manhattan Bridge to DeKalb then Normal

The (N) will terminate at Atlantic Avenue (Express Tracks)

The (Q) will operate in two sections:

Between Coney Island via 8 Avenue to Queens Plaza (E)(R) station

Between Queensboro Plaza (7) train station and Astoria Ditmars Blvd

The (M) will operate as a shuttle between Myrtle and Metropolitan Avenues

(F): To change trunk lines at West 4th Street, the train must be on the local track. The 8 Av Line does not have any switches to the local track south of 34th Street.

 

It seems that with your plan, the 8 Av Local would have the (A)(F)(Q)(R), which is way too much. Also, the (N) would get in the way of the (D)(F) while terminating.

8 Av Local track: (B)(C)(E): 29 tph

Cranberry Tubes: (A)(C)(D) 23 tph

Jay St Junction: (A)(C)(D) + (B) --> (A)(C) + (B)(D): 23 + 8 --> 15 + 16

(N) No service from Lawrence St to Queensboro Plaza. Local in Brooklyn.

(Q) No service from Prospect Park to Queensboro Plaza.

(R) No service.

(Z) Same as (J).

(1) No service.

(2) No service from 149 St-Grand Concourse to Flatbush Av.

(3) No service.

Extend the (J) to Broad Street all times.

Resurrect the (W) and send it to Whitehall St while sending the (N) to the Manhattan Bridge all times.

 

Use (W)(R) Rector Street, (W)(R) Cortlandt Street, (J)(Z) Broad Street, (1) Rector Street or (2)(3) Wall Street as alternate service.

 

(4) and (6) trains terminate at Brooklyn Bridge.

(5) trains run via (2).

 

No (4) service in Brooklyn, use (3) instead.

 

 

Canal Street on the (1) is flooded as well as Canal Street on the (A)(C)(E).
