(D) trains can't switch to the express track after West 4th St southbound.

Queensborough Plaza fell on top of Queens Plaza closing both stations indefinitely.

(N)(Q)(7)(E)(M)(R) affected.

Isn't that a bit too much foam?:eek::(

Anyway...

(N)(Q) No service north of 57 St

(R) Runs via (F) 57 St - 36 St (Queens)

(E) Some trains run via (F) West 4th St - Jackson Hts. Other trains do not run between Lex-53 St and WTC.

(M) No service between Broad St and 71 Av

(7) No service. Running a little service would lead to dangerous overcrowding.

NEXT SCENARIO

The 7th and 8 Av lines are closed directly south of Penn Station. No trains may go in the area directly south of Penn Station on either line.

Canal Street on the (1) is flooded as well as Canal Street on the (A)(C)(E).

I'm doing this one logically and rationally:

(1) - No service between 14th Street and South Ferry

(2) - Runs on the (5) line in Manhattan

(3) - No service south of 42nd Street - Times Square

(4) - Extended to New Lots Avenue

(A) - Local, runs on the (F) between W 4th Street and Jay St

(C) - Suspended

(E) - From W 4th Street, goes to 2nd Avenue and terminates

Next scenario: The switches directly south of 59th Street (A)(B)(C)(D) aren't working properly, and trains can only pass along 8th Avenue. How would you divert the (B)(D) trains (and alter service on other lines potentially)?

I'm assuming you quoted the wrong person, since what you posted sounds like the Canal Street scenario.

(B) Runs via the (C) from 59 St to West 4 St, then via the (F) to Stillwell Av.

(C) Runs express 145 St to Canal St.

(D) Runs via the (C) from 145 St to West 4 St, then via the (F) to Stillwell Av.

(E) A few trains run express from 50 St to Canal St.

(F) Runs express in Manhattan, via the Manhattan Bridge to Brooklyn, then via either the (B) or (D) to Coney Island.

(N)- trains run in two sections-

Between Astoria-Ditmars Boulevard and 34 Street-Herald Square.

Between Whitehall Street and Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue.

(Q)- Suspended between Prospect Park and Astoria-Ditmars Boulevard. Less frequent service.

(R)- trains run in two sections-

Between Forest Hills-71 Avenue and 34 Street.

Between Chambers Street via the (J) line and Bay Ridge-95 Street.

Okay, here's my SAS scenario.

  • The 2nd Avenue (F) station is closed.

  • All (J)(Z) stations south of Essex Street are closed.

  • All 6th Avenue local trains (whether they're called (F), (M), or whatever) are forced to run over the Williamsburg Bridge.

How do you change service to best provide service on the Culver, Jamaica, and Myrtle Av lines?

This is sorta old, but I really wanted for do this one a lot!

(E)- Rerouted via the (A) between Canal Street and Jay Street-Metrotech and via the (F) between Jay Street-Metrotech and Church Avenue.

(F)- Rerouted via the (M) between Broadway-Laffayette and Middle Village-Metropolitan Avenue.

(G)- Extended via the (F) from Church Avenue to Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue.

(J)- Suspended between Essex Street (middle track) and Broad Street.

(M)- Normal service.

(Z)- Suspended fully.

Keep in mind that the (J) line has 480-ft platforms.

Why not this?

(:P Runs every 12 minutes.

(N) No trains between 34 St - Herald Sq and Whitehall St.

(Q) No trains between 57 St / 6 Av (trains from Brooklyn run via the (:o) and 34 St - Herald Sq. Trains relay via 63rd, wrong-railing to 57th/7th.

(R) Trains run via the (D) from Pacific St to 34 St - Herald Sq, then via the (M) to Queens Plaza. Some trains run via the (F) instead from 47/50 Sts to 36 St (Queens).

A terrorist attack has destroyed the Times Square station, making it impassable for trains. How would you reroute the

(1)(2)(3)(7)(N)(Q)(R)?

(M) - Suspended

(Q) - Runs normal route to Dekalb Ave, then follows the tunnel to Broad St, then the (Q) would follow up and go to Middle Village.

(R) - Uses 6th ave and 53rd St tunnel Goes to Manhattan via Manhattan Bridge. Runs all times.

(N) - Shuttle from Astoria to Queensboro Plaza.

(:P - Runs all times. Goes down from Brighton Beach to Coney Island, where it then follows the Sea beach line to 59th St.

(1) No service from 72nd St to 34th St.

(2) Only runs to 96th St.

(3) Shuttle from 148th to 135th.

(4) Extended to Crown Heights at all times

(5) Extended to Flatbush Ave all times.

(7) End at GCT. (Duh.)

(S) Suspended. (Duh.)

No one posted this as a scenario, but I wanted to answer what I would have done for the 6th Avenue Fastrack. A lot of it is based on what the MTA is actually doing, but I tweaked some things. For instance, why does the (Q) have to stop in Queensbridge instead of continuing to the QBL? Why do the (E) and (F) both have to run via 53rd and 8th Avenue where they're basically clones of each other?

(B)(M) service would end early as in the current plan, although see below where I mention the possiblity of an extended (M).

(C) as is, express south of 59th to make room for the (D) and to reduce switching delays at W4th and Chambers.

(D) runs from 205th to Coney Island, via 8th Avenue local to West 4th Street, then via the (F) line to Coney Island. The West End line could be served as is (the D to Whitehall or 36th, possibly signed as an (S) to reduce confusion), or possibly by an extended (J) or (Mx).

(E) regular service.

(F) suspended, replaced by (D)(Q).

(Q) runs to Queensbridge as in the MTA's plan, then extended all the way via the F to 179th Street.

(N) Run in 2 Sections: Between Coney Island and Cortlandt St. And 14th St. - USQ and Astoria.

Reduced (Q)/® service, runs both lines via the (D) then on the (F) to Forest Hills - 71st Ave.

(A) runs via the 6th Ave. from W4 to 59th St.

(C) runs in 2 sections: Btwn Euclid and 14th and btwn 34th - Penn and 145th.

(E) runs from 34th - Penn to Jamaica ONLY!

No. Cortlandt Street and Union Square on the (N) and 14th Street on the (C) all lack the switches required to turn trains.

8 Av is closed at 23 St. No trains may pass or stop.

What's interesting is that this is basically the 8th Avenue Fastrack, and there was a bit of bickering on the Fastrack thread as to how many trains you could wedge onto the 6th Avenue local tracks. Since presumably this is a full-time closure, and we're not talking late-night headways, that number is certainly no more than three in this situation.

I'm going to offer two different solutions.

Serious:

(A) runs via 6th Avenue from 59th to West 4th, local on entire route.

(:P© suspended.

(D) normal.

(E) Jamaica Center to 34th Street. Frequency is reduced, trains are lent to (F) instead.

(F) normal, plus the extra trains borrowed from the (E). (Some of the extra trains would probably short turn at Church Avenue.)

(M) kicked off 6th Avenue. Either it runs as a shuttle to Myrtle, or the brown (Mx) comes back to Chambers.

Foamy, but serious in the sense that it saves on some switching at 6th/34th, plus it provides full service on QBL since it doesn't give the M the boot:

(A)(C) suspended.

(;) rerouted to 207th Street. The (B) and (Q) would switch roles on the Brighton Line for the duration of the closure, with the B running local to CI 24/7, and the Q express to Brighton Beach suspended late nights (but not weekends).

(D) normal.

(E) same as above.

(F) same as above.

(M) normal route from 71st/Forest Hills to West 4th, then via the (A) local to the Rockaways. A second (Mx) would serve the Myrtle Line as above.

Theoretically, one could fit a combo like the (C)(F)(M)(R) onto one track if absolutely necessary with a total of 30 tph. What matters is the tph (6, 8, 8, 8 in the example above), not the number of services.

As for my solution:

TPH RT CHANGE

10 (A) No trains between 34 St - Penn Sta and Chambers St (middle track relay). Trains run local north of 34 St.

08 (B) Normal service.

06 (C) No trains between 168 St and Chambers St.

08 (D) Normal service.

08 (E)1 Jamaica Center to Canal St or Whitehall St via 63rd and Broadway.

08 (E)2 Jamaica Center to Lefferts Bl / The Rockaways. Via the (F) to W4, then the (A).

12 (F) Service slightly reduced (every 4 mins to every 5) to accommodate other services.

08 (M) Normal service.

Advantages:

No switching on 6 Av

No exotic reroutes

The 6 Av Local, with the (E)1, (F), and (M), has 28 tph.

There's this mythical number of 30 tph a lot of people have in their heads, but I think it's important to realize that just because one section of track is capable of handling 30 tph doesn't mean every section of track in the entire system is capable of doing so.

I'm not saying that running the (E)(F)(M) together the way you have it is impossible, but it's definitely something to keep in mind.

One question I do have though, is that the way I'm reading it, you have the (A)(C)(E) all going on the Fulton line. Are all of them necessary?

Also, I'd question your ability to turn both the (A) and (C) at Chambers. Single tracks like that generally aren't meant really meant to turn trains, although they're more than capable of doing so. The (W) ran far fewer than that combined 16 tph, and still had significant delays trying to turn at Whitehall with a similar setup.
