22 Years Ago Today...

R10 2952

Yes, I have gone over several of those cars R10-22 in the last few years and they have held up much better then the steel cars that came after them. To say that they were the same just shows that someone doesn't know what their talking about.

I beleive that may be the reason why the Redbirds were notorious for early rust-out, particularly the ACF units (R26/28) and also the GE R36 WFs (9558-up). The World's Fair cars were reportedly built with thinner steel.

But on the other hand, the Redbirds still are in great shape underwater, while the (H&M) K-cars have rusted away after only 10 years. The K-cars were also built by St. Louis and probably have a similar body.

Why did they build the cars with thinner steel any way? Was there like a weight restriction on the Els? I mean the Hi-V Gibbs did fine on the Els for 54 years and they weighed almost 90,000 pounds and they never had A/C either.

It was cheaper, that's all.

-back from the lurking pool....-

The R10s were great cars. My old man rode them when he was 6, when he was in college, when he lived in Far Rockaway.... he loved the cars - and that helped fuel his R44 hating ;)

How are the 2 surviving units? I hope the museum car doesn't rust away in CIY like those other cars... R10s 4ever :)
