rarno1d Posted November 2, 2011 #1 Posted November 2, 2011 Hi all, I'm planning to take the MNR up from Marble Hill to the Breakneck Ridge flag stop to go hiking this Sunday; the planner gave me a schedule where I'd leave Marble Hill at 8:40, get to Croton-Harmon at 9:28, and leave at 9:29 to get to Breakneck at 10:02. I was just wondering, is that feasible? I haven't taken the Metro North too many times, so I don't know how closely they keep to their timetable; is there a chance that the Poughkeepsie-bound train would leave before the Croton-Harmon train got there, since there's only one minute for the transfer? Or do they time this so that people can make the transfer specifically? I just really don't want to miss the train, since it's the last one that goes to Breakneck that day, but while I could take an 8:16 train instead of the 8:40 one it seems silly to get up earlier just to wait half an hour on the platform if there's no danger of transfer problems. What do you guys think? Thanks, Reuben
lilbluefoxie Posted November 2, 2011 #2 Posted November 2, 2011 where in Manhattan are you? it might be easier to go to Harlem-125 St and take the 8:58AM Poughkipsee train, then you are on the train you need. I dont know if its set up like the LIRR is where you can transfer like that. if I were you, I would go to Harlem 125 St or back down to Grand Central a little bit earlier and take that train straight from there.
HomeBall Posted November 2, 2011 #3 Posted November 2, 2011 As as long the local train isn't excessively late, 20+ minutes, the RTC will hold the Poughkeepsie train for the connection at Harmon. It should be no problem. However Breakneck Ridge IS NOT A FLAG STOP. If a train is not scheduled to stop there it will not.
mark1447 Posted November 3, 2011 #4 Posted November 3, 2011 Theres only 2 trains to/from the Ridge. 2 in the AM (TO Breakneck) and 2 in the PM (FROM Breakneck).. You should be ok to get your connection unless its not late as Homeball says. If anything then hop on the 6:40 local train and you will have an entire hour to connect. BTW try not to miss the train if your heading out of the Ridge because then you will be forced to walk to Cold Spring which is like a 45min walk on NY 9D. http://www.mta.info/mnr/html/planning/schedules/pdf/HUD%20SS%2010_16%202011.pdf where in Manhattan are you? it might be easier to go to Harlem-125 St and take the 8:58AM Poughkipsee train, then you are on the train you need. If hes from uptown Manhattan or wants to save some money, best to head to 225th OR any Bronx local stations below it. If he has the money then yeah head to Zone 1 stations, even tho it will cost em.

I come from Penn Station, I could easily just stay on the to Marble Hill or take the to 207 and get the Bx12 to Fordham but its just easier to bite the bullet, and pay a few extra bucks and go out of Grand Central.
Truckie Posted November 3, 2011 #6 Posted November 3, 2011 If I were in your shoes, I would take the semi express (stops at Marble Hill @ 8:16 and wait the half hour at Harmon. If that local train gets delayed for more than a few minutes then you may find your self missing that last Breakneck Ridge train.

Yeah but thats diff. When you come out of LI on the LIRR your closet station is GCT. Other people maybe living somewhere along the line. If i were to live in Riverdale, I wouldnt wanna go down to GCT just to hop on a Genesis Express to the Ridge. Id just take the local to Yonkers or other Local/Express stop for connection. Plus save some cash. If i were to go on LIRR, my choice would be ether taking the Subway to Penn or Q44 to Jamaica. I usually just take the Q44 since I don't wanna pay extra. Unless I have the money and if im in a rush. Same for NJT Bus to Ridgewood. Taking the 163X out of PABT or the 175X Local at GWB. GWB is closet so I pretty much take that instead if I wanted to head to Ridgewood, NJ .

As a semi regular user of the Hudson Line and I am not in a hurray i.e heading to/from the west side or even Brooklyn, I transfer at Marble Hill myself for the .
