7th Avenue Station (BMT)

Curious to know if anyone has any knowledge of the fate of the closed part of the mezzanine of 7th Avenue Station on the BMT line (B/Q). I often travel through this station and walk past the closed gates and blocked stairwells etc. From the web searches I did all I could surmise was that it was closed in the 70's to deter crime? I see no evidence of any other entrances to this station on surrounding streets. Maybe some people have some info. Thanks in advance for taking the time. Much appreciated.
