Shortline Bus

"The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is starting the weekend off with overnight service disruptions throughout the system, leaving straphangers traveling at odd hours, stuck.

Seventeen of 22 subway lines throughout Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx will experience disrupted service because of construction work. Lines affected include the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, A, C, D, E, F, G, J, N, Q, R and S.

Courtesy of a new weekday pilot program called “Fast Track,” an overnight blitz of repair work on the affected lines will last through Wednesday."

Always complains, complains, complains... Instigated by the media of course!

I'm confused now... I thought they were going to be doing work at night now to alleviate the disruptions on the weekends???

My friend VG8. Please read this link and it should answer your questions. This thread was how citywide news stations like CBS/Ch. 2 and other media are showing how some Overnight riders like the Lex are angry at the overnight shutdown. Problem is some group of riders in NYC will always be affected by these needed GO's.

So once they start with these weeknight programs, will work on the weekends stop or what?

The media has made this look more puzzling than it is. There is ALWAYS construction in the subways on the weekends. The Fastrack stuff is the shutting down of big, major portions of a whole subway line on the weeknights. In fact, starting on Monday, the (4)(5) & (6) trains will be the first line to do Fastrack. From Monday the 9th till Friday the 13th, the Lex line will be closed from Grand Central to Atlantic Ave in both directions from 10pm -5am those nights. Other lines will get it later this year. Be on the lookout for the announcements on the trains about that, especially on the New Tech Trains. That is seperate from the weekend stuff, as far as I know.

Fastrack is supposed to be independent of weekend construction service.

True. "Fasttrack GO's" is being created on the major Manhattan coordior lines i.e Lex/east side, 7th/west side, 8th Ave/CPW and 6th Ave so that it lessens the need for major reroutes on weekends on these busy coordiors.

Weekends is the fastest growing ridership area in the current (MTA) system.

Please the fasttrack has nearby alternative as well in Manhattan. For example with this Lex weekday overnight shutdown the (3) is extended to New Lots and the 42nd (S) runs all night.

Hope VG8 now understand.

With the Q not running north of Prospect Park, couldn't they run shorter Trains on the Q to Eastern Parkway Station or something so that they wouldn't need shuttle buses?

How in the world would they be able to send (Q) to Eastern Parkway?

Not only it's different division(BMT vs IRT), there is no track connection of any type in the area.

He might have meant (Q) to Botanic Garden on the Franklin shuttle track. Because then people still have a direct connection between the (Q) and the Brooklyn IRT. If the (Q) is completely suspended north of PP, it does not connect to the Brooklyn IRT [at Atlantic or Botanic Garden, which of course is quite unconventional since it would have to switch to the BMT Franklin line tracks].

By the way CBS is making it a whole lot worse than it is.And They got the Fasttrack wrong.Basically they are saying that all of this weekends work wiil go on all this week overnight.Someone once told me that the Media always makes things worse than it really is

still having 2 car (Q) is definitely making things worse, the 2 car (S) barely can handle 4 stations of the franklin shuttle, let along the whole Brighton line. That said the shuttle bus is the only feasible solution until that g.o. is over.

As someone who onced worked in the media(reporter for the Queens Ledger)that true. The old phrase 'if it bleeds it leads' is a true motto in today's sensationalism media.

When was the last time you heard about 'good news' at the top of the newscast?

So the endless weekend/overnight construction on the NYCTA subway system is an example of that.

It's not only that. In this POS they call a report they actually state that the (:( is one of the few lines that doesn't have planned weekend construction work! (It's on the main article, where it says "Alex Silverman With Straphangers At Grand Central") I mean, do they even bother to check which lines run and which don't??? They couldn't care less. Instead of focusing on real problems, including transit related ones, they instigate complains about subway construction.. Well, let's return to the 70s, when there was no capital construction and everything broke down.. More complains!! A vicious cycle...
