I saw a R-32(I believe) (B) train when I was watching the 1977 disco classic movie with John Travolta! Was transit using these models in the 70's?

Are you kidding? (No really are you?) Of course!!! The R32 were like the main stay of the (B)(N)(D)(M) and (A) back in the 1970s. Even the (J) had a few.

The R32 is the oldest train running. It's over 40 years old.

It was designed for 30 years... just goes to show how strong Budd made those cars.
