Shortline Bus Posted February 7, 2012 Share #1 Posted February 7, 2012 "The New York Giants on Tuesday will be showered with confetti and greeted by throngs as they are feted with the city’s most storied honor: a parade through its Canyon of Heroes. Paul Rieckhoff, founder of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, says veterans deserve a parade as much as the Giants. But all the fanfare — the parade this week is the fourth since 2000 to honor a sports team — has touched off anger and unease among some returned Iraq veterans, who are eagerly awaiting their own recognition. “Everybody recognizes that the Giants deserve a parade,” said Paul Rieckhoff, founder and executive director of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. But, he added, “If a football team gets a parade, shouldn’t our veterans?” Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, who has long expressed his regret that the United States did not do a better job honoring veterans of the Vietnam War in the 1970s, has cited advice from the Pentagon in deciding it was not appropriate to hold a parade while American soldiers are still fighting in Afghanistan." http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/07/nyregion/calls-for-a-new-york-parade-honoring-iraq-veterans.html?_r=1&hpw
lilbluefoxie Posted February 7, 2012 Share #2 Posted February 7, 2012 It depends on if you count Iraq and Afghanistan as the same war, the War on Terror or if you consider em separate wars. If you count them as the same, its better to wait till every soldier is home to do the parade. If you count em separately, do one for Iraq now, then do another for Afghanistan when everyone returns home from that.

Although many people still believe our nation should never went to Iraq. With that said, at end of World War II NYC did held '2' parades for returning soliders. One from Europe fighting Hitler's Nazi Germany in mid 1945. The other of course later that same year in '45, when the war vs Japan ended. Not to mention a few cities such as St. Louis just recently holding a parade. IMO it's Bloomberg just trying to be 'different and difffcult' again. So i am sure a parade for the Afgan/Iraq wars will be held at some point hopefully as soon as possible.
KTrainExp Posted February 7, 2012 Share #4 Posted February 7, 2012 There's no doubt that a parade will be held. But we should wait until all soldiers are back before celebrating. Cause right now we have some people coming back from Iraq and redeploying back into Afghanistan. It wouldn't make sense to be in a parade one month and being shipped off the next. Amtrak7 Posted February 8, 2012 Share #5 Posted February 8, 2012 There should definitely be a parade/ceremony when most/all the Afghanistan soldiers come back in a few years. But not on a weekday!
Grand Concourse Posted February 8, 2012 Share #6 Posted February 8, 2012 Yeah, weekday parades are disruptive and forces ppl to choose bw going to it or stay at work/school. As for the troops: they deserve a parade, but since we haven't won anything in Iraq and Afghanistan, I doubt anyone wants to celebrate a 'retreat'. If they really wanted a parade, it should've been the day after OBL was killed. They blew that opportunity.

I would not exactly say the US did well over there.
