Metro-North plans rail design exhibit at Grand Central Terminal

Later this month, MTA Metro-North Railroad, which late last year received the international Brunel Jury Prize for overall design and excellence, will host an exhibit of Brunel Award entries from 43 passenger and freight railroads from 15 countries at Grand Central Terminal’s Vanderbilt Hall in New York City. The exhibit will be open March 19-31.

 

The scope and variety of the entries illustrates the “intense competition for the prestigious prize,” which is awarded every three years by The Watford Group and The Center for Industrial Design in Transportation,” Metro-North officials said in a prepared statement.

 

The competition is open to passenger and freight railroads worldwide. The award is named after railway inventor Isambard Brunel, the founder and builder of the United Kingdom’s Great Western Railway. The award recognizes and promotes excellence in railway architecture, engineering, landscape and environmental design, product design, locomotive and car design, graphic arts and corporate branding.

 

Metro-North was the first U.S. railroad to win the award, Metro-North officials said. The Brunel Awards jury noted the railroad’s shift to incorporate design as a strategic business tool, they said.

 

Among the award’s five categories. Metro-North won first place in the “Freight and Railway Support Buildings” category for its Croton-Harmon Locomotive and Coach Shops.
