WTC delays keep Cortlandt Street closed

 

Long delays at the World Trade Center site mean straphangers will have to wait longer for the closed Cortlandt Street station on the (1) train to re-open.

 

Destroyed on 9/11, along with a section of subway tunnel, the station remains as an unadorned box waiting for reconstruction.

 

"The completion of that construction will be tied to the site as a whole, so we'll be working with the Port Authority to get things done as quickly as we can," said Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman Jeremy Soffin.

 

With word yesterday that cost overruns and delays may force the Port Authority to further scale back its plans for the World Trade Center transit hub, any hope of the Cortlandt Street station reopening soon was diminished.

 

"It's the most convenient way for tourists headed for the World Trade Center site," said Gene Russianoff, lead attorney for the Straphangers Campaign. "And the stop where they should get off is closed."

 

The nearby Cortlandt Street (R) and (W) station is also closed while the MTA rebuilds the Fulton Street Transit Center, another project that is overdue and over budget.

I think that the (R)(W) cortlandt street station is going to be closed forever & simply be part of the transit center there. As for the (1) cortlandt street and the WTC transit hub... I am disgusted that developers would argue for so long on what to put at the WTC above ground as to cause years of delays leaving an "open wound" in lower manhattan aiding only to make people stressed, sad, and frustrated at PA and (MTA). They should have simply built the permanent below ground transit structure and let the developers plan around the underground layout. This is a vital economic and transportation infrastructure that has taken a back seat to people submitting harebrained (no offense intended at all) reconstruction ideas and sentimental "leave it the way it is" BS. Those "leave it the way it is" people don't have to use the system every day to get to and from school work or to visit family. They don't see the problems the delays are causing, all they see is part of the skyline missing, an don't take into account the vital role this area plays to the health and vitality of the metro new york area. Get it built all ready!!!!

The Cortlandt Street station for the (R) and (W) was closed a little too early because there was lots of time where the entrance from the PATH wasn't closed off until just recently.

 

The Cortlandt Street (1) station is a different story since they still can't figure out what to fill that hole with.

The underground connection to the (E) should not have been closed so soon either. What used to take 2 minutes now takes 6 or 7 having to walk all the way around the fare control area to the entrance.

I fully agree, I'm sick of all the delays of stuff they are supposed to fix, like with the Junius Street transfer from the (3) and (L) stations... :mad:

The subway is something that will repay investment in the form of increased rider-ship all day, not just peak hours. Weekends are no longer "stay at home" days, they are "go out and do something" days. The transit schedule should reflect this. Decreasing service on days when most people have off is a BAD idea. The federal government needs to stop snoring and give transit agencies the money they need to get things to where they should be, instead of having fare increases that dig into people's income. The original "master plan" for the subway is what should have been implemented. People would use the subway 10x as much and fare increases would not be needed. All stations should be safe, have healthy air, and not be crumbling & coated with dust and mold. Don't get me wrong, i adore using the subway, but they could do so so much more. It is unacceptable that NYC is the only city on earth with a metro/subway with crumbling AND abandoned useful stations that could be put into use in emergencies. Expand service as much as possible. Bring back the elevated lines, use automated people movers on street level between subway lines that are far like if you wanted to go from the apple store to whole foods, the service isn't fast enough on the shuttle to use that, plus you'd take (4)(5)(6) to (7)<7>/(S) to (A)©/(:P(D). How about while the SAS(T) is being built, have double articulated express busses along 2nd ave? How about a crosstown subway between (4)(5)(6) and (1)(2)(3)(B)(C)(D)(A) beneath central park? All of the solutions are out there, you just need to implement them.
