LIRR And MNRR Random Thoughts Thread

Recommended Posts

Been reflecting on certain travels I used to do 5-10 years ago on commuter rail in Downstate NY, mostly Metro-North.  All this talk in the news currently about a "coin shortage" reminds me of all the times the MNRR ticket-vending machines spouted unwanted amounts of dollar coins at me.  One TVM I was at wasn't accepting cards, so I had to get a round trip with a $50 bill; thing literally spit out like 35 dollars' worth of spare change, like one of those old Vegas slot machines.  Made for a damn awkward scene, not to mention carrying all that metal home...

Used to be other funny shit that happened too, over the years- a druggie using the payphone at White Plains station, a 100-car CSX freight train rumbling through Spuyten Duyvil in the middle of the day, people from an Amtrak train galloping down the stairs to catch the commuter train at New Rochelle.  Funny stuff, lot of it's changed now..

Does anyone know why there's a 6:49 PM train starting from Stony Brook (not Port Jeff.) and heads west? Why did they bother scheduling such a slow service to begin with? It takes an extra 40 minutes because it's waiting on eastbound trains to come through. I know the train has existed in the timetable for awhile now but there isn't anything the MTA can do to speed it up? I know eastbound trains have priority and all but making westbound passengers wait 10+ mins at every station isn't exactly a compromise.

Probably a converted deadhead

Took Metro North up to White Plains today, got an M3 in both directions 😁

Train had door problems delaying us leaving GCT, train coming back the A/C was broke in one of the cars. Train also got delayed in both directions due to single tracking, its nearly 5PM on a weekday and their STILL single tracking SMH.

Does anyone have information on the status of the Penn Station renovations or have visited recently? I get frequent updates about the 42nd street corridor and it's acceleration due in part to lower passenger levels, I'm wondering what the progression is like on the west side.

The Atlantic Ticket is pretty nice. Took the LIRR from Atlantic Terminal to Jamaica and boy was it a fun ride. I also got a glimpse of the bellmouths that lead to RBB and the Abandoned Woodhaven Station on the way to Jamaica. (NGL, that Woodhaven Station would’ve been pretty useful for me right now)

Used to be a daily thing for me.... I would then xfer at Jamaica for a Ronkonkoma or a Huntington train to Mineola.... Although I don't miss the commute, I'd like to see how that third track project out there is coming along....

Anyway, did you board an express, or did your train stop at ENY & Nostrand?

It seems like they reached Mineola, I passed by there, there were a few Vehicles getting ready to set up the 3rd Track.

It stopped at ENY and Nostrand. Last time (back when there was that 10 Day G.O. where the (J) was cut back to 121st) I was on the Atlantic Avenue Line, my train ran express.
