Why would something on a completely different line affect the (B), other than perhaps needing to run some Broadway trains via 6th Avenue?

The (2) and (5) switch is one of the more common unplanned service changes. I usually see one every few weeks, and it probably occurs more often than that. I mean, there are so many different scenarios that can necessitate a switch, it's not a big deal.

I remeber the first time i ever took a train to the bronx, (2) and (5) trains were running express northbound on White Plains.

Not only that, north of E 180 St, (2) trains ran on the (5) and (5) trains ran on the (2)

This was because all Broadway trains (particularly the (Q) and (R) were all running on the north side of the Manhattan Bridge, sharing tracks with the (B) and (D)), and the Sixth Avenue Line was overcrowded. The (F) trains after a certain point were being dispatched from Jamaica every 12 minutes.

Aside from this, you had (N) and (W) trains all over the place that had to be turned at 34 St to go back to Astoria, with (Q) trains probably blocking the way in terms of turning trains around so that (Q) and (R) trains that had made it southbound into Manhattan also had to turn at 34 St. So the solution was to hold all Broadway trains in Manhattan and the ones outside manhattan were turned at Queensboro Plaza ( (N) / (W) ), Atlantic Av-Barclays Center ( (N) ), rerouting the (D) to 4 Av Local, or rerouted via 63 St or 53 St / 6 Av ( (Q) and (R) )

IRT is messed up cause a train with mechanical problems went down at Flatbush terminal, (2) and (5) had to be rerouted to Utica and New Lots, then another or the same train went down at Nevins Street.

IND was also messed up in Manhattan today due to a variety of reasons.

As per the MTA data feeds for this week, the (B)(W) and (M) (in Manhattan) are all scheduled to end early this week (except Friday), presumably due to the 6th Ave Fastrack:

(B) - Lost 4 round trips, Last train from 145th scheduled to depart 8:35 PM (normally 9:15 PM); Last train from Brighton Beach 8:14 PM (normally 8:54 PM)

(M) - Lost 2 round trips, Last train from Forest Hills 8:06 PM (normally 8:27); Last train from Metropolitan to Manhattan 8:14 PM (normally 8:38). Service between Delancey-Essex and Myrtle also ending 2 hours early which is also attributed to Fastrack.

(W) - Lost 9(!) round trips, Last train from Ditmars 7:48 PM (normally 9:26 PM); Last train from Whitehall 8:38 PM (normally 10:14)

So the (B) was already ending a little early, and perhaps they just attributed it to/it just got mixed in with the big FUBAR on Broadway yesterday. I stayed in Queens yesterday, but I did see one Jamaica-bound (F) signed up as via Crosstown, so I'm assuming 6th Ave was a real Clusterf. No clue why the (W) is ending so much earlier than normal. though. Hope this isn't the start of even more G.O. creep.

The service changes starts around 9:30 PM, although I believe it starts earlier in the northbound direction. So having (F) trains operating via 59th Street in conjunction with the (N) , (R) , and (W) probably meant one of those had to get the boot.  Also, (N) trains may be running local in Manhattan during these times as well, and there's more merging.

I want to point out, a similar issue occurred in the morning and was fixed. Around 6:45 PM was when this service change peeped up again, and remains ongoing:

Multiple Impacts  Posted:  05/15/2021 08:47 PM

There is no (Q) service between Kings Hwy and Coney Island-Stillwell Av in both directions while our crews continue to correct a temporary loss of power at that location.

S‌ome (Q) trains are running on the (D) or  (N) line between ‌DeKalb Av‌ and Coney Island-Stillwell Av.

For alternative service, consider using the ‌‌‌‌‌‌‌(D) , (N)B68 or B82 local bus service.

The (N) ran local in Brooklyn only, but express service via the Manhattan Bridge from DeKalb Av to 34 St continued operating, with only the (R) running local, and the (F)(N)(Q) running express.

(D)(N)  trains are delayed and/or rerouted in both directions while emergency teams are responding to someone who was struck by a train on the express track at 25 St.

Coney Island-bound (D)(N) trains are rerouted on the (Q)  line from DeKalb Av to Coney Island-Stillwell Av

(R) service is suspended in both directions between Whitehall St-South Ferry and Bay Ridge-95 St.

See a station agent and receive a courtesy pass for nearby service.

1) How was it so easy for a person to get struck by a (D) train on the 4 Av Express when the tunnel walls separating the local from the express are more or less designed to prevent it from happening?

2) Why did they not send the (D) train to run via Culver after B'way Lafayette, and the (RR) train to bypass the incident entirely to run via Crosstown so that it could run to Kensington?

There openings in the walls on the 4th Ave line that are big enough that a person can get through.

As trainfan22 mentioned, there are ways to access the 4th Avenue express tracks. There are openings at every station.

Also, the Culver Line was out south of Church Avenue, which is useless for those going into southern Brooklyn.

Brooklyn-bound 4 trains will arrive/depart on the Bronx-bound track at Bowling Green while our crews address a switch problem at that station.

but the problem is bowling green is the last stop for 4 trains. How do you terminate trains like this? Now as I’m writing this I guess it’s simple the T/O just walks to the other end?

Yup.

Train crosses over after Wall Street and doesn’t use the loop.

Now if the train actually does use the loop after arriving on the opposite platform, a railfanner needs to be dispatched to Bowling Green at once.

There is no (M) train service between Marcy Av and Middle Village-Metropolitan Av in either direction because of FDNY activity at Fresh Pond Rd.

Some Metropolitan Av-bound M trains will end at 2 Av on the (F) line.

Some Metropolitan Av-bound M trains will end at Broadway Junction on the (J) line.

See a station agent for a courtesy pass to continue your trip on nearby bus routes. See bt.mta.info for real-time bus arrivals.

Last night, (D) trains were rerouted down 8th Avenue and Culver because on an unauthorized person on the tracks at 7th Avenue after 1 AM. Today:

Trains Rerouted  Posted:  05/26/2021 01:27 AM

Southbound (D) trains are running on the (A) line from 59 St-Columbus Circle to W 4 St-Wash Sq and then on the (F) line to Coney Island-Stillwell Av while FDNY responds to a report of smoke at 7 Av.

For service to/from skipped stations, take a northbound train.

I wonder what tomorrow will bring.

Some Reroutes

There are major delays and reroutes to A train service while we repair a 3rd rail-protection board along the tracks in the tunnel between Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Northbound A trains are running on the F line from Jay St-MetroTech to W 4 St-Wash Sq and will make all local stops in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Some northbound F trains are running along the G line from Bergen St to Court Sq, then via the E line to Jackson Hts-Roosevelt Av.

C trains are suspended on the entire line.

Some Delays

There are major delays and reroutes to B D N and Q train service while NYPD responds to someone in need on the Manhattan Bridge.

B

Service is suspended on the entire line. Take the A or Q instead.

D

Trains will make local stops in Manhattan and then run along the F line in both directions between W 4 St-Wash Sq and Coney Island-Stillwell Av

M

Trains are not running between Delancey St-Essex St and Forest Hills-71 Av in both directions to alleviate congestion along 6 Av due to rerouted trains.

N and Q

Trains are running along the R line in both directions between DeKalb Av and Canal St.

Travel Alternatives for service between Brooklyn and Manhattan-

At 14 St-Union Sq, take 4 or 5 trains.

At Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr, take 2 3 4 or 5 trains.

At 59 St-Columbus Circle, transfer to A C trains to Jay St-MetroTech where R service is available.

At 34 St-Herald Sq, transfer to N Q or R trains for service into Brooklyn.

Expect delays in F R and W train service as they share the same track with rerouted trains.

See a station agent for a courtesy pass to continue your trip if you have no service at your station.

There is no service in either direction on the (A)(C)(E) lines between 59 St-Columbus Circle and W 4 St-Wash Sq while we remove power so NYPD can investigate a report of an unauthorized person on the tracks near 50 St.

Northbound (B)(D) trains will end at 34 St-Herald Sq and return southbound for service.

Consider travel alternatives, such as nearby (1)(2)(3) lines.
