Service Change  Posted: 01/18/2014 12:37PM

Due to ongoing track maintenance between Queens Plaza and Jackson Hts-Roosevelt Av, some northbound r.png trains terminate at 57 St-7Av and northbound e.png, f.png and r.png trains are running with delays.

Allow additional travel time.

I don't understand why having 3 trains sharing the express track (that run every 10 minutes each) would overwhelm the system so much.  More trains run on the express track during the weekday rush-hour and the system handles that just fine.  If it can handle it during the week, why can't it handle it on the weekends?  (A similar thing happens whenever track work makes trains share the track between 36th & Atlantic in Bklyn on weekends.)

So...what's behind the Northbound termination of the (Q) today at Parkside vs. Prospect Pk? Is there station renovation going on at Prospect? Parkside struck me as odd

It's to force people onto the buses or find an alternate travel. If the train dumped at Prospect Park people would slam the (S) which has no hope of coping.

In the case of the 4 Av example it's probably because there's flagging next to the work zone that limits throughput.

On the QBL the express and local are physically separate, but here the work is just north of Queens Plaza according to the press release.

There were quite a few (F) trains that went to Jamaica Center. The ones that went to 71 Av came in on the express tracks, related right past that double crossover between the 2 express tracks, then went back to Manhattan going express. (E) trains were going local past Roosevelt Av to make up for no (R) trains.

It was a total mess out there

The R was a total mess to Brooklyn the past 2 nights, just like in the "old days" when the R ran through the tunnel on weekends.  Waited 25+ minutes at 9:40pm last night at Union Square for an R train to Brooklyn, and then waited just about 25+ minutes at 10:55pm tonight at Union Square for an R train to Brooklyn.  The headways are every 12 minutes at this time according to the schedule. We were seeing 3 N train's for every 1 R train.  The R really should run Court-95th 24/7 so that these Queens disasters don't screw up everyone in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Just curious, how would running the Court to 95th section have helped you in Manhattan anyhow? Besides, if the Court St->95 St portion of the (R) was running, that would mean the 71 Av (179 St in this instance) to Whitehall St would also be running and that portion would still be affected by the broken rail problem on Hillside Av.

I could have taken the D, F, N, or any other train that was running to Brooklyn instead of waiting 30 minutes for an R to Bay Ridge.  The N trains were running normally during this mess - it's quite frustrating to see 3 or 4 N trains and then you finally get an R train.  Could have taken any of those N trains to Brooklyn for "normal" 12 minute R waits.  Ask everyone who needed service to Union, 9th, Prospect, 25th, Bay Ridge Ave, 77th, 86th and 95th what they'd prefer.  The answer is BY FAR reliable service even if you need to transfer to the Court-95th shuttle.  It works perfectly during the week and I love this shuttle.  Has made for the best weekday service there's ever been.  (The platform at 59th St Brooklyn was PACKED at midnight last night for a Bay Ridge train, and that shouldn't be when trains should have been running every 12 minutes.)

As an alternative, R trains can still run over the bridge during weekends with Queens track work, but should terminate at 42nd or 57th/7th so that Brooklyn/Manhattan service is unaffected by massive delays caused by Queens track work and/or track problems.  The E can run local in Queens instead.

That doesn't solve the issue at hand; it just creates another one. This time on Queens Blvd. If your "idea" to fix the slow (R) trains on 4th Avenue is to cut the (R) from Queens Blvd and run the (E) local as a replacement, I'm sorry, but that's a terrible idea. You're reducing service on Queens Blvd by a wide margin and shafting riders of half of the express service on the line.

Also, the only reason why service is set up as it is on weekdays with the split service is because DeKalb junction through the Bridge cannot handle five different lines. If it could, Canal St (tunnel platform) through Jay St (4th Avenue platform) would be closed entirely throughout the duration of the Montague closure.

When 3 lines share the same track along Queens Blvd, it unfortunately causes catastrophic weekend delays for E, F and R customers.  With fewer trains running (if the R were not to run along Queens Blvd when there's Queens Blvd track work) it would mean faster service for E, F and R customers due to less merging delays.  They had to cut the R back to 57th/7th for a good portion of Saturday due to merging delays (and this was even *before* the Parsons/Hillside track issue.)  And it would save the MTA money instead of having extra people/runtime by extending the R all the way to 179th St.  There has to be a better way than giving Queens customers extensive delays due to merging/trackwork, and 30 minute waits for people who don't care about Queens and only need Brooklyn R stops.

They cut the (R) back to 57 St because there was literally nowhere else for those trains to terminate. The Hillside branch was inaccessible due to the broken rail, (F) trains were either running via the (E) to/from Jamaica Center or turning on the express tracks at 71 Av and the lay up tracks east of 71 Av were out of service for the weekend due to planned construction. It was either cut the line back to the nearest unaffected terminal or keep running trains into the Queens Blvd mess. They picked the logical option in this instance.

However, cutting the (R) back to a Manhattan-Brooklyn or worse, a Manhattan-only line (with the Brooklyn portion served by the extended 4th Avenue shuttle) is not an ideal solution long-term. Riders who want the local stations would cram onto the (E) and the (F) would pick up all the (E)'s express ridership along with its own riders. Then there's the fact that you're basically cutting service in half from 57 St-7 Av to Queens Plaza. I get that you're frustrated with the problems that continuously plague the (R) line, but removing it from Queens Blvd, where it's needed just as much as it is along 4th Avenue, is a disaster waiting to happen. If your idea is to bring better or more frequent service to 4th Avenue, perhaps that could be solved by running the (N) local during the weekends. It's not an ideal solution either, but it's much less damaging than cutting the (R) off Queens Blvd.

Due to NYPD activity at Church Avb.png and q.png trains are bypassing Church Av in both directions.

Allow additional travel time.

(Running the N local on weekends will not solve the problems of Bay Ridge riders.  The problem is 30 minute waits for Bay Ridge riders.)

I can think of an equal number of times that Dekalb messes have totally ruined service in Queens. The R train is the only access to a huge swath of stations on the second busiest trunk line in the system - Queens Blvd. We need more service, namely weekend M service, not cutbacks. I'm sorry that "queens disasters" caused you a bad few commutes, but lets not propose shafting hundreds of thousands of riders because of it.

Flat out wrong -

When the E/F/R share a track on Queens Blvd it's on a weekend when each is running 6tph Tops, and the result is an 18tph operation.

If I'm not mistaken, the QBL express tracks handle 30tph during rush hours, and the local tracks handle 18. There's no reason why that should cause delays, but of course sometimes trains have to slow because of flagging - and THAT is where the delays come from.

I get that "You don't care about queens" but there are hundreds of thousands who do.

Delays  Posted: 01/20/2014  8:02PM

Due to ongoing signal problems between Astor Pl and Bleecker St, southbound 6.png trains are running with delays.

Allow additional travel time.

(There are only two times when R service runs perfectly:  Weekdays Court-95th, and late nights 36th-95th.  And the crazy delays weren't just limited to the R train.  Just missed an uptown E at 9:45pm last night at 23rd St, and there was another E train 2 minutes behind it.  The Queens track work causes major delays to the E, F and R lines on weekends.  Let's see how bad this upcoming weekend is when E, F and R trains all share the local track in both directions btwn Queens Plaza & 71st Ave/Continental Ave-Queens Blvd.  I'm sure the Woodhaven Blvd crowds will also be thrilled with the 25-30 minute R train waits all day and all evening long.  Someone needs to stand out there with a stopwatch to make a report of just how bad it is.)
