"Three generations of a Bronx family were wiped out Sunday when an SUV carrying seven people - including three little girls - vaulted off an overpass and fell 60 feet into the Bronx Zoo, killing everyone in the car.

All the victims were found inside their overturned van and were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Rescue workers had to cut them out of their seatbelts.

Police said the victims were an 84-year-old man; three women, aged 80, 45 and 39; and three girls, aged 15, 5 and 3.

"I've been in the fire department for 30 years. Sometimes you come up on events that are horrific," said FDNY deputy chief Ronald Werner. “This was horrific.”

The members of a tight-knit Dominican family, whose names were not confirmed by police, died only a few blocks from their home in the Bronx."

Very sad story. My condsolances to that family. With that said,(it's too early to draw a conclusion)was the driver who police state was the mother of the now pershied '3' children 1) driving too fast when she lost control 2)Was this a case of a rollover in this case a late model Honda Pilot?

We shall see after the investgation.

This is why people should use public transit instead of cars. :(

JW if you live in Montana what you do as mass transit does not exist? Let not turn this into a transit vs car debate right now as accidents happen on transit sometimes as well. Yes NYC is a mass transit town and when possible people should use trains/buses in the metro area region. With that said instead of being anti car maybe promote greener cars. JW you mainly off base because the mass transit is better argument is another topic.

I'm sure a accident like this can happen with a bus as well....

Trains IMO are the safest of the three modes of transport in question, but trains have their fair share of hiccups as well (WAMTA, Metrolink, just to name a few).

Thank You. At this point we should be sadden and focus on a family in the Bronx lost their lives in a tragic accident. Accidents can happen anywhere anytime whether it's car, bus, train or plane.

Wow, how terrible. It says that they were seatbealted at the time, so that just goes to show you how dangerous high speeds can be, even with modern safety technology.

On another note, it is true that buses (and especially school buses) are generally built more strongly than cars and SUV's, but of course that is no guarentee. Deaths have occured in every form of transportation ever invented.

I remember driving that stretch of Bronx River Parkway once, its not a place to be going fast at all. Best stick to the speed limit in the right lane and let the daredevils go around.

I'll withhold my "lol" from a certain comment...

The only thing I laughed at was the ninja smilie..... lol....

I shrugged & shook my head at the comment in question.....

Gotta agree w/ Shortline.... This had squat to do with car v. mass transit.....

As for the hundreds of other motorists that drove on that portion of the bronx river parkway & lived.....

I remember reading that they were speeding before they crashed. I don't know if I can exactly say they were, but if they were it would partially be their fault to blame.

They went 70 in a 50 zone. Technically that's speeding, but generally I'd say 95% of New Yorker's always drive 10-15 mph then speed limit in a 50 zone. (ie. Belt Pkwy and parts of Van Wyck as well)

im honestly not surprised and shocked at all, those highways are not designed for people to be going 70 mph, people do and they get into accidents, sometimes they dont make it out alive. Moral of the story is, slow it down, especially on the parkways that arent designed for people to be going that fast (They date back to the 1930s and '40s and feature bad ramps, pavement, and sudden twists and turns)

But you're still less likely to die in a train crash than a car crash. It's simple: In a bus or train, you are more likely to have a more skilled driver, and also the vehicle is heavier, so it makes it easier to survive a crash.

Dude don't bring this train kill more people then cars crap, the fact of the matter is, if you are in a big thing with wheels on it ,it will kill you, car or train.

According to Daily News, sadly that part of the Bronx River Pway has had couple of other fatal accidents just in last few years as well. Local traffic officals call that area the "Bermunda Triangle" of NYC highways. And yes speeding is the possible leading cause of this event that authories are looking into.

First of all, I was referring to the following statistic about school buses in particular (see article below):

"Numerous federal and academic studies have concluded that school buses are the safest form of ground transportation of all, in fact. The National Safety Council says they're about 40 times safer than the family car."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40820669/ns/us_news-life/t/why-your-childs-school-bus-has-no-seat-belts/#.T58m1e1_dvY

Second, in terms of MTA buses, your little video does not "disprove" anything. Obviously these buses do not have a deflector shield like the Enterprise to avoid crashes. Relatively high speed crashes, like the one in the video, can and will damage any vehicle just because of the laws of physics. However, if you look at the inside of a bus after a big crash like that (not the exterior damage), you will find that the people in the car are almost always worse off than the people inside the bus.

If a train or a bus crashes, that's pretty much a massacre considering the greater number of people.

Thanks Joe for confirming the mass transit situation in Montana lol. Still back to point, i don't think their local/regional buses runs 24/7. Thus why i stated before in most of the US having access to a car is a must and not a luxury such as in NYC.

Oh, and of course Via Garibaldi just likes to disagree for the sake of disagreeing. And then he'll bring up some BS about me being obsessed with stats and how this is a tragedy and I shouldn't be doing all that and yadda yadda yadda. Typical....

I never said trains kill more people than cars. In fact, I said the exact opposite. Prove me wrong: Trains are safer than cars any day for the reasons I mentioned. Yeah, if the train derails and flips over, you're dead, the same way as if a car goes flying off the road and you're inside it, but compare how often car accidents occur compared to how often train or bus accidents. A higher percentage of people who travel by cars are affected by accidents than people who travel by transit.

In any cases, my condolances go out to their friends and family.

What in the world are you talking about?? I agreed with a post and from that you bring up all of this...??? You don't know what I'm thinking since I have yet to say anything on the topic. I think it's ridiculous that we're having a friggin' discussion about what mode of transportation folks should be using in a tragic incident like this one... <_<
