XcelsiorBoii4888 Posted May 8, 2012 #1 Posted May 8, 2012 Does the MTA have extra sets of pull cords for buses in case any gets damaged?? because i rode an xcelsior 4870...the left side pull cord was not there...last time i rode it on the S53...it was tied to the second to last window....they fully removed it now...people are pulling those cords to hard...and they break easily. So just a question on what the MTA would do if it damages.
User Posted May 8, 2012 #2 Posted May 8, 2012 I treat those cords with respect. Never yank it cause there's no reason to. Poor cord from 4870.
Joel Up Front Posted May 8, 2012 #3 Posted May 8, 2012 The ones on the Orion Vs seem to have held up better. Anyway, there's an argument for the tape - people don't know that you just have to pull on it with one finger to get the STOP REQUESTED sign to light up.
Blitz Posted May 8, 2012 #4 Posted May 8, 2012 The tape costs a lot more than the pull chord. The pull chord wouldnt break If animals didnt try hanging from them...
mark1447 Posted May 8, 2012 #5 Posted May 8, 2012 The tape costs a lot more than the pull chord. The pull chord wouldnt break If animals didnt try hanging from them... Yeah.. But there also animals who love pulling it for fun. Makes me wonder if it ill require replacement in the future if it is over used?
Grand Concourse Posted May 8, 2012 #6 Posted May 8, 2012 The tape costs a lot more than the pull chord. The pull chord wouldnt break If animals didnt try hanging from them... Wouldn't it also be simpler to slap "pull cord gently" stickers so that regular riders would not yank them? Sadly other people just have no regard for property.
Via Garibaldi 8 Posted May 8, 2012 #7 Posted May 8, 2012 lol... No comment at the animals comment... Don't those buses also have the red buttons as well, so those can be used in addition to the pull cords.
Grand Concourse Posted May 8, 2012 #8 Posted May 8, 2012 If you are in the 2 seater by the window, I don't see why a person is going to reach over to push the button vs pulling on the cord. Plus would you really prefer to touch that same button many other have over tugging on a cord, Mr. health conscious?

The pull chord wouldnt break If animals didnt try hanging from them... yeaa those cords are being destroyed!! sad...i was thinking if the mta would get tape for the newer buses in yellow that goes across like the RTS but where the cord is located Wouldn't it also be simpler to slap "pull cord gently" stickers so that regular riders would not yank them? Sadly other people just have no regard for property. that should be added to new buses! so animals dont do dumb ishh! lol... No comment at the animals comment... As for your part in bold, I don't understand what you mean by because its free??? If you want to know the truth, it seems like more folks prefer pulling the cord over pressing the button, mainly because they're not even aware of the buttons. If I have Whole Foods bags or whatever it is far easier to just press the red button, esp. if the bus is in motion because I don't have to reach as far to pull the cord. I don't see what difference it would make germ wise pulling the cord vs pressing the button?? I still wash my hands just the same as soon as I get home or to my office or whatever.

There are several buttons placed throughout the bus... Not seeing your point to be honest.
S78 via Hylan Posted May 8, 2012 #13 Posted May 8, 2012 I just use the push button. Saves me the trouble of reaching over people.
7LineFan Posted May 8, 2012 #14 Posted May 8, 2012 I really don't care what I use. If I'm sitting, cord. If I'm standing, button. Whatever's closer. what i mean is that the cord is more longer than the button...pressing the button is everyone pushing that one thing....as for the cord its more freely for you to pull it anywhere as for in one spot Do you really thing the cord is going to be any cleaner than the button?
Threxx Posted May 8, 2012 #15 Posted May 8, 2012 People pull the cord & press the button. There is no difference in cleanliness.

XcelsiorBoii4888 Posted May 8, 2012 Author #19 Posted May 8, 2012 I already have. thank you...if you dont understand then someone else will...i honestly dont care Can we get back to the point of what the MTA will do if these pull cord have problems...do they have extra sets??

They'll either have new ones installed or they'll have to have the strips put back in. At this point the first option will have to apply since they've already gone with the pull cords. They have to have extras because they stated that they are cheaper to install AND replace than the strips. It isn't like they haven't had these before, so I would think they would know the negatives to having the pull cords if you will. They existed on the fishbowls years ago when I was a kid and I hated them then and hate them now.

Via Garibaldi 8 Posted May 8, 2012 #22 Posted May 8, 2012 oohhh ok....because i had a dream castleton put a string of yarn to replace it....and tied it to each ends lol I have been on old Orions out of Castleton that had the strips replaced with the pull cords which were broken or missing, so basically you had no way of requesting the stop other than going to the front or yelling out for the stop. Pretty ghetto, but then again that's SI local buses for you. The 's motto is if the bus can run, put it into service. If the sign is broken or the AC is broken they'll still put it into service. I was on an X14 once which had no AC and it was already about 80 degrees outside that morning. I get on the bus and ask the B/O if he had AC and he tells me he does, so I dip my card and sit down. By the time we reach the FDR the bus is like an oven and now I'm stuck on the bus and stuck in traffic to boot. Another regular who would get on over by Manor & Martling asked me if it seemed hot to me and I said it did. By the time we reached 23rd and 1st, we were literally baking and now I'm heated because I'm heated. I went up to the B/O and we exchanged words because if I ask you a question, don't lie to me. I told him if he didn't have AC tell me when I asked him and I could've waited for the next express bus. I got off there and walked to the subway. Took that long for me to cool down (both from the temperature on the bus and from the rage I was feeling at the time). I've also been on buses where the shocks were literally shot, so nothing on SI local or express buses surprises me. I asked the B/O why he still had the bus in service and he told me that it has be something like 90 degrees outside in order to put the bus out of service if there is no AC.

Via Garibaldi 8 Posted May 8, 2012 #24 Posted May 8, 2012 yess i know right!!! staten island buses are horrible...people treat them with noo respect! -__- I got news for you... It's not just the passengers that treat like the crap... Some of the B/Os do too... Cigarette butts on the bus when passengers aren't allowed to smoke...
R188 7857 Posted May 8, 2012 #25 Posted May 8, 2012 Speaking of pull cords, the ones on the Orion 5 CNG's are better. They are more loosened so you can pull it hard, but it is like a string. It dips down more than the ones on the NG's. Which is why when you pull the cord hard on the NG's, the cord is possibly shorter, so it is not that loosened. I mean, the ones on the NG's or any new buses don't dip down. You can't even pull them that far down. Compared to the ones on some O5's, those cords on the newer buses are tight. And the tape is bad for the buses. If your sitting on a seat with no red button or tape near you, you have to reach to the person infront of you. And sitting on the seats facing the middle is a disaster. Who would want someone else's arms in your face?
