Penn Sta. Enlargement(1st phase of Moynihan station) to reduce congestion

"The Port Authority says that seas of rider congestion and confusion at Pennsylvania Station will be be a thing of the past once the first phase of the Moynihan Station project is complete.

 

The first phase of the Moynihan Project, budgeted at $267 million, will pay for two new entrances to the current Farley Post Office building with stairs, escalators and elevators that will carry passengers directly to Long Island Railroad platforms.

 

The western end of Penn Station will be enlarged to accommodate the riders.

 

On Tuesday, Port Authority Executive Director Patrick Foye visited the LIRR tracks that extend under the post office on the west side of 8th Avenue.

 

"There's going to be more access points, there's going to be less crowding on the subways and Long Island Rail Road and other platforms and, frankly, it will be a safer experience," he said.

 

The Port Authority says the new entrances will be open to riders within four years.

 

However, there is still no timetable for the second phase of the project, which will turn the main post office building into the new Moynihan Station.

 

Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan championed the idea of creating a new terminal to echo the original Beaux Arts Penn Station that was demolished in 1964.

 

Moynihan Station will become the new entrance of Penn Station and new home of Amtrak.

 

Riders will connect underground to NJ transit, the subway and the LIRR.

 

"The goal is to convert the Farley Post Office into a train station like Union Square in Washington or, for that matter, Grand Central Terminal," Foye said.

 

The LIRR, Amtrak and NJ Transit are conducting a study to envision what Penn Station underground should like look once Moynihan is finished."

First they said NJT would use this station, now they say Amtrak. I'm wondering what will happen to the old Amtrak areas in Penn once this is done. Also, what about Amtrak PD and NJT? NJT areas of Penn are currently patrolled by them, so will they turn to MTAPD or get NJT Police certified in New York State?
