Q33toLaGuardia Posted May 12, 2012 #1 Posted May 12, 2012 Im wondering if NICE will still have service to Jones Beach for the summer. I took tha5t buslast year and had a blast at the beach there. Definitely wanna go back but gotta make sure since NICE has all the Nassau Co routes now. If MTA still offers the LIRR Getaway Package too that would be awesome as well lol
Orion VII 4 Life Posted May 13, 2012 #2 Posted May 13, 2012 The N88 will be running, they haven't released the schedules yet though.
User Posted May 13, 2012 #3 Posted May 13, 2012 The N88 will be the only bus route this summer running to Jones Beach. No N87 sadly, seeing as NICE has said close to nothing about it. Schedules are supposed to be released this week according to an e-mail I got from NICE, but who knows if that will happen. There probably won't be an LIRR package deal this year because I don't see NICE and the working that close together.
BM5 via Woodhaven Posted May 13, 2012 #4 Posted May 13, 2012 I want the n87 back. It did better than the n73/n74 in terms of Ridership. I think n73/74 Service should be canned off peak hours every other bus and weekends every bus. The n87 can handle the crowds. Some people even took the n87 just to get along points on the n73/74 lines
Gotham Bus Co. Posted May 13, 2012 #5 Posted May 13, 2012 I want the n87 back. Not likely to happen. Nassau County is barely willing to pay for whatever service is still running.
VWM Posted May 13, 2012 #6 Posted May 13, 2012 The n87 is a 2013 possibiltity, and what I see is the n88 service needs to be mega beefed up.
Joel Up Front Posted May 13, 2012 #7 Posted May 13, 2012 As much as some NICE operators haul ass with the Orions, I wouldn't want to be stuck on an SRO Orion VII on the way to the beach.

Maybe, package deal could be possible since NICE Routes are enconded on Trip Planner. Trip Planners --- MTA Regional Trip Planner >> The good people of the MTA have linked their Trip Planner with all NICE routes and stops. Use it as another way to navigate your way around your NICE region.

I think n73/74 Service should be canned off peak hours every other bus and weekends every bus. The n87 can handle the crowds. Some people even took the n87 just to get along points on the n73/74 lines Based on an examination of schedules, N73 interlines with N79 Monday-Saturday. If you cut back N73, something else will have to interline with N79.
User Posted May 13, 2012 #10 Posted May 13, 2012 The 73/74 should be extended during the summer to Jones Beach. That's Monday-Saturday given that ridership was not THAT high on the N87 back with the . This saves NICE a lot of money than just creating another whole new route.

That will destroy the interlining with the N79 at Hicksville. Stage Coach used to operate a shuttle bus between the Wantagh LIRR station and Jones Beach after the AM "rush" to the beach.
checkmatechamp13 Posted May 13, 2012 #12 Posted May 13, 2012 That will destroy the interlining with the N79 at Hicksville. Stage Coach used to operate a shuttle bus between the Wantagh LIRR station and Jones Beach after the AM "rush" to the beach. That doesn't help riders coming from Hicksville, though. In any case, if the interlining is screwed up, there are other routes they can be interlined with.
Amtrak7 Posted May 13, 2012 #13 Posted May 13, 2012 In any case, if the interlining is screwed up, there are other routes they can be interlined with. Yea the proper way to plan is to write a schedule then hook trips. Not the other way around.

And with traffic on the Wantagh Pkwy, throw away the timetable.

I was thinking rush hour service Monday-Friday and all day Saturday service that the 73 or 74 be extended to Jones Beach. The timetable would be changed to meet the LIRR at either Hicksville or Wantagh, depending on where most ridership on the N73/74 comes from.

Beachgoers should get off Freeport.
nostalgia Posted May 13, 2012 #17 Posted May 13, 2012 Yea the proper way to plan is to write a schedule then hook trips. Not the other way around. That makes sense at Hempstead but I'm not sure at Hicksville.
Marctalky1 Posted May 14, 2012 #18 Posted May 14, 2012 No need to interline the 79 with the 73. 79 should go back to Mineola, 73/74 extended to jones beach. Its not fair now that if I want to go to beach I have to pay 2 fares now from the 79. Im better off just going to tobay beach where its quiet and empty during the week. Hey maybe the town of oyster bay should run a shuttle or something that would be great.
RtrainBlues Posted May 14, 2012 #19 Posted May 14, 2012 If there is heavy ridership getting on the N88 at Jones Beach in the early evening after a hot day, or after a busy concert lets out, is it customary to order additional buses in case the bus is already full (to prevent people from waiting an hour for the next one, and/or getting stranded in Jones beach all night)?

The timetable would be changed to meet the LIRR at either Hicksville or Wantagh, depending on where most ridership on the N73/74 comes from. Rush hour is not the market for beach service. I would extend all N73 service from 8A to 7P. Leave the handful of N74's turning at Wantagh.

Most of the private bus companies essentially ran one way service; to the beach in the morning and from the beach in the afternoon. Stage Coach was the exception, and operated all day service to the beach from Freeport and Wantagh.

Well, a lot of people spend all day at the beach. Maybe it wouldn't work I guess. But I like your idea with the N73. I guess the N74 would work for just between Wantagh and Hicksville.
PinePower Posted May 14, 2012 #24 Posted May 14, 2012 I have another idea and that would be to extend the N51 to Jones Beach. Those normally empty N51's would get busy fast since RF is a major xfer point and alot of folks would like the one seat ride to Jones Beach.
