Shortline Bus Posted May 17, 2012 #1 Posted May 17, 2012 "For the first time, racial and ethnic minorities make up more than half the children born in the U.S., capping decades of heady immigration growth that is now slowing. New 2011 census estimates highlight sweeping changes in the nation's racial makeup and the prolonged impact of a weak economy, which is now resulting in fewer Hispanics entering the U.S. "This is an important landmark," said Roderick Harrison, a former chief of racial statistics at the Census Bureau who is now a sociologist at Howard University. "This generation is growing up much more accustomed to diversity than its elders." The report comes as the Supreme Court prepares to rule on the legality of Arizona's strict immigration law, with many states weighing similar get-tough measures. "We remain in a dangerous period where those appealing to anti-immigration elements are fueling a divisiveness and hostility that might take decades to overcome," Harrison said. As a whole, the nation's minority population continues to rise, following a higher-than-expected Hispanic count in the 2010 census. Minorities increased 1.9 percent to 114.1 million, or 36.6 percent of the total U.S. population, lifted by prior waves of immigration that brought in young families and boosted the number of Hispanic women in their prime childbearing years. But a recent slowdown in the growth of the Hispanic and Asian populations is shifting notions on when the tipping point in U.S. diversity will come — the time when non-Hispanic whites become a minority. After 2010 census results suggested a crossover as early as 2040, demographers now believe the pivotal moment may be pushed back several years when new projections are released in December." Via Garibaldi 8 Posted May 17, 2012 #2 Posted May 17, 2012 I don't think it'll mean anything since what counts is money, which equals power. If the minority becomes the majority but is still poor and uneducated overall you'll just have a majority with the same power it has had over the years. There still seems to be this stereotype in the black and Hispanic communities in particular that if you go to school and you're smart and get a good education that you're a sell out or you're white. So you have folks complaining if they're unemployed and complaining if they're trying to do the right thing. The end result is what you've got now.... Large swarths of black and Hispanic men unemployed. Meanwhile the unemployment rate for whites and Asians isn't nearly as high. Me personally I could give two you know what's about what folks think about me. I'm educated, have a good job, live in a great area and don't have put with half of the crap that many others do in this current economy, so I have no regrets about getting a good education and taking advantage of my ethnic background to open doors. That's another key thing... The black and Hispanic communities have too much divisiveness in order to actually prosper currently while other ethnicities work together to help each other out. Sure the Chinese don't like the Japanese and you've got sort of hierarchy issues within the Asian community, but the Chinese stick together, as well as the Koreans and the Japanese and so on. Same thing with us Italians. We have our problems but at the end of the day we stick together.

Via Garibaldi 8 Posted May 17, 2012 #5 Posted May 17, 2012 Too bad they don't talk how big your ego is lol. No big ego at all... I'm just confident in myself. If others were they'd accomplish a lot more.

MHV9218 Posted May 17, 2012 #10 Posted May 17, 2012 The big thing I take away from this is that the anti-minority racism in this country is going to be in a lot of trouble. In a majority-white country, racist morons can unfortunately get away with some of their craziness -- sorta the whole "if it isn't me, I don't care." But in a democracy, you can't run on a policy of building a wall to keep the Mexicans out when most of the country is Latino (which is coming soon). I'm hoping the transition of American into a minority and then to a Latino country finally kills off some of the terrible racism that we still face. Sure, you'll always have racists, but it's gonna be a lot more difficult to have elected racists....
Joe Posted May 18, 2012 #11 Posted May 18, 2012 it's gonna be a lot more difficult to have elected racists.... Does the apply to future members of the city council?
MHV9218 Posted May 18, 2012 #12 Posted May 18, 2012 Does the apply to future members of the city council? Heh, who do you have in mind?
MTARegional Bus Posted May 18, 2012 #14 Posted May 18, 2012 but it's gonna be a lot more difficult to have elected racists.... Not if you have a Super Pac.
MHV9218 Posted May 18, 2012 #15 Posted May 18, 2012 Not if you have a Super Pac. Don't even get me started on those...Citizens United is one of the worst decisions made by the Supreme Court in history. It's literally ruining the democracy in our country.

White America (being more specific, the rich white elites) know where the power is, and no increase in minorities coming from lesser-off families is gonna shift the power/stronghold of this country in their direction.... All this is, is white media tryna shame minorities with its out of control birth rate..... They've been on that tip for a while now... Damn, we get it... the increase in OOW (out of wedlock) births is not news to anybody.....

Minorities are the majority now so what's the excuse now for doing so poorly??

I don't disagree with the point.... I just don't think that's the message that's being portrayed.... Just because you have more poor people doesn't mean they're automatically gonna become rich (or, more well-off than what they are) overnight..... and the rich whites know that !

Whites make up something like 63% of 65% of the population (I forget which one), so they are still the majority. That means minorities are at 35-37% of the population and the last time I checked, you need 50% to have a majority. In any case, not all minority groups are the same. Asians are a minority and they aren't doing too poorly overall. The median income for Asian households is actually higher than for White households, and of course, we know how well they perform in schools (the streotypical "Smart Asian kid")

How the hell is a little baby supposed to perform significantly better than its peers? And I'll stop nitpicking when you stop twisting my words around (not in this thread, but in other threads). Don't twist what I say around and act like you have no idea what I'm talking about when I'm crystal clear.

This is exactly what I'm talking about... It's beyond ridiculous already... It's f*cking OBVIOUS that I was talking about the FUTURE!! Hello wake up!! When the reporters we're talking about this having political ramifications, obviously they were talking about the future... I give up already. This is just getting sickening. I'm serious.
Roadcruiser1 Posted May 18, 2012 #25 Posted May 18, 2012 Don't label Black and Latino people poor. I know plenty of hard working Black and Latino people that are hardworking. Some are teachers, some help other people, and the others work hard. They are not poor by any means. They accomplished their goals by having nothing and digging and changing it into something. They are not unsucessful by any means. Instead of associating with race I rather say it's the people that are lazy and expect things to be handed to them to be the ones that are causing trouble. How are you going to be successful if you are just going to sit there waiting for a welfare check?
