NYPD and federal officials raided a building in Chinatown believed to be the center of a network of illegal gambling activities Monday.

Officials raided the six-story building at 35 and 37 East Broadway shortly before 6 p.m., a culmination of an investigation dubbed "Operation Snake Eyes" in a reference to the game of dice.

Law enforcement sources said the building hosted a group of illegal gambling operators on floors 1, 3, 4 and 6 over at least the last two years. Games like mahjong, pai gow poker and computer-based slots were offered in nearly half the building's suites.

Sources said the building was modified to accommodate the gambling operations, including the creation of ground-floor slots and rooms dedicated to hosting computer slots, and the installation of surveillance cameras.

A neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous told NBC 4 New York it was obvious to him the building was hosting a gambling den.

"In the summertime when my windows were open and their windows were open, I could hear the chips smacking," he said.

There was "just gambling, men and women up till 3 in the morning, all night sometimes," he said.

Another neighbor, Yue Wang, said it was "weird" when there were "people up there at 5 in the morning."

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers marched several people out of the building during the raid. Two doctors were also arrested for allegedly practicing without a license.

Around $14 million in assets were expected to be seized, sources said. The building was also raided last year, when NYPD seized over $200,000.

And to think that answers my question as to why these two buses were being used as Police Buses.....

Had to make the reference to Rush Hour 2 here.

Anyways, I am not surprised either. I have heard some strange things coming out of Chinatown, in New York, in the Caribbean, lots of places.

Chinatown is the only area for illegal gambling? I'd say there are a lot of Chinatown spots for that, but definitely not the only area in the NYC vicinity for illegal gambling.

Sure it isn't the only place for illegal gambling, but I'd say it's the biggest and most well know. It's no secret that Asians are big gamblers.

Doesn't the NYPD have a few retired MTA buses? Why do they keep using buses that the MTA still uses for these mass arrest operations?

Probably easier to take whatever buses are close by? :shrugs:

As for the gambling crackdown: is it really that big of a deal? If it's just people using their own money, then that's their business. It seems to my if the government isn't involved, then it's illegal. Basically like the mob wanting kickbacks to support gambling.

Precisely. It can't be taxed, and therefore, must be illegal.

Asians love to gamble with Mah Jong. Not the one on Windows. The gambling one. Sort of like scrabble and the Windows Mah Jong combined.

Scrabble and Windows Mah Jong? That's the worst analogy of mah jong I've ever heard. Closest analogy to that are dominos and playing cards.

They had those two along with Mah Jong, table games and slot machines.

Most of the buses have all available routes programmed in them, regardless of whether or not said bus will ever see service on a particular route.
