From The Age:

Trains skip stations to evade fines

METRO has resorted to skipping stations and running unscheduled short services since its new timetable was introduced last month, stranding passengers so its trains will run on time. It has happened at least four times a day on average.

Drivers say the rate at which they have been ordered to alter a service mid-journey suddenly became ''prolific'' when a new train timetable was introduced on April 22.

It's quite clear that someone's figured out that it's cheaper to skip a few stops or short shunt it early.

It seems to be on varying degrees aswell. This evening while waiting for my service at Dandenong the previous Cranbourne train (4:59PM) was terminated right there at Dandy meaning a at least 500 people had to all pile off and change platforms to get the following service. That arrived at around 5:05. The crowd was still making its way out of the platform when my train pulled in at 5:07.

Apprantly it's the 3rd time this week that train has been terminated at Dandy.

I've had my train I was indending to board orded to run express at least two stops. It was only 5 minutes late and had only started it service one stop down.

Then there are the extremes of one Frankston train being ordered to express every single station to get to Frankston. That's 25 stations.

Slightly less extreme:
