Pakenhamtrain 82 #1 Posted July 25, 2012 From The Age: Special: W-class icon T946 on track to full restoration July 23, 2012 Andrew Heasley WIRELESS internet connectivity and mobile phone applications may supersede the old recorded monologue on Melbourne's City Circle historic tourist trams, Premier Ted Baillieu says. ''I'd be delighted to see the messages change,'' Premier Baillieu said. ''We're talking about all sorts of opportunities for different messages, whether on the destination board or on the audio. There are opportunities also, in this age of communication, to provide a bit more wi-fi,'' he said. Mr Baillieu revealed the technology push as he showed off a circa-1940s W-Class tram undergoing a government-funded restoration. The tram, number T946, could be the first W-Class to feature wireless internet technology when it joins the City Circle route in October. The tram in Question SW6.946 has been out of service since 2009 after pulling the overhead down and slightly catching fire. Intrestingly this tram wasn't one of the regular City Circle vehicles. It mostly running route 30's. City Circle trams Maroon and Gold. The Green and Cream liveried vehicles are normal route service trams. But they're only used on 3 routes. 30, 78/79. I do find it intresting they refer it to a W8. SW6.922 was partway through a conversion to a W8. With work on it stopped for quite some time. I do wonder how many more beyond the 38 out there will be done. There's not like there's much of a shortage stored of Ws around at Newport and Preston. By my count there are 81 SW5, 78 SW6, 19 W6 and 28 W7.
