"Fare boxes will soon be installed on TOR buses to help speed payment and boarding, thanks to a new $2.4 million federal grant.

The first fare boxes could appear on Transport of Rockland buses within three months and all 63 TOR buses should have them by the end of this year, said Tom Vanderbeek, Rockland County’s public transportation commissioner.

The technology will eventually be used on all Tappan ZEExpress buses as well, he said Friday. They are currently used on Westchester’s Bee-Line buses and on MTA New York City Transit buses.

Fare boxes will allow for money to be collected more efficiently as well as generate and collect ridership data. TOR buses currently rely on fare registers, which are more time-consuming and provide less security when handling revenue.

“The driver is responsible for handling the tickets and the money,” Vanderbeek said of the current process.

He said the county collected $2.5 million in cash on its buses in 2011.

The fare boxes will allow drivers, who are monitored by cameras, to focus on verifying the type of fare and checking if the rider’s transit card is valid. Riders will simply put the cash or discount tickets into the locked box."
