Where do you think switches are needed?

-Southbound W4th to Broadway Laf on the IND 6th Ave is a MUST. Especially when there are General Orders forcing the (D) to ether split or reroute.

-Restore the Junction over at 174th to Freeman on the IRT WPR. Sometimes AM rush most of the time (2) may end up getting stalled along the way, and needs a way to by pass all this, while still serving some local stops.

I'd love to see one before Bay Parkway on the (D) line, going towards Coney Island. That way when a train has to terminate at Bay Parkway, it can just pull into the middle track instead of pulling into the local track, then switching to the express track then back to the local track on the opposite direction

That's why there should be an X switch before Bway. There should also be a crossover before Grand so trains can terminate there if the Bridge is closed...

`

That's impossible. The (G) goes downhill directly after the station...

A diamond crossover isn't needed, just a simple crossover (to bring Culver bound tracks over to Manny B). A double is redundant with what's already at West 4th. What has to be done is to deactivate the wheel detectors and replace them with one shot grade timers.

I understand what you mean, but this current setup was meant to accomodate express service on the West End, where Stillwell trains actually would come in on the express track and switch over south of the station. But if that isn't gonna be done and the need will never rise, then of course move the switches to remove a relay!

They need to do something about 205 on the (D) that relay is such a huge waste of time.

That's simple, make it the terminal (already a TD office and a small crew room), but then they would prove all those renovations done to Bedford Park in recent years was a complete waste of money. Take some of the available space upstairs in the main Bainbridge Av entrance (near the south end) and convert it to a crew room. The plumbing is already there for his/hers bathroom (sorry public) and locker space for the (D) crews ( (B) crews still have the lockers at Bedford). Doing that would actually allow management to cut jobs, and save money by eliminating runtime from 205 to Bedford (which is why all the jobs on the line that do two trips are penalty). With the exception of the split south terminal (like the (F) has on weekdays), the (D) would function similarly to the (F) in runtime, and money would be saved in the long run, although it would take awhile for the inital investment to be recooped. Crews would hate that the money is taken away, but would appreciate that 205 is a better lunch spot than Bedford (has everything Bedford has and then some) and some of the relays would be taken away.

Newkirk (B)(Q).

Nostrand (A)(C)

A MUST in my opinion:A switch from Southbound (4) right before Utica. This will allow train to use the local track to terminate when half of the time there is no (3) train anywhere nearby. And will also decrease conga lines right before Utica that sometimes go as far back as Nostrand Ave.One time (5) trains couldn't leave Franklin because (4)trains were backed up all the way to the switches right before Nostrand!

It's a bit less useful, but a possible use of the exp>local switch is if 8 Avenue is somehow impassable, so (E) trains can run via the (F) and (A) via the (D), switching after West 4 to the (F) to Jay. This will mean that (A) and (E) trains will not interfere.

I'll echo the calls for a crossover between the southbound tracks north of Broadway-Lafayette - it would be extremely useful for reroutes. But since it's underground, there are columns in the way, and moving them out of the way would probably be cost-prohibitive. (There used to be a diamond crossover south of Bway-Laf, but it had to be removed when the connection to the Manhattan Bridge bridge was installed. The express tracks now begin their rise just south of the station, so it can't be restored there.)

- From the Manhattan-bound local track to the express track at Kings Highway (F), although there's the question of why that switch was removed in the first place.

That line screams of either:

  • poor planning

  • intent to stop express service from being properly implemented

  • or someone wanted to make sure that if trains ran express to Manhattan, it would begin at Avenue X, skipping one additional station.

Somewhere along the Sea Beach Line (New Utrecht Av or 18th Av) X-Switch at local and express track in both directions so if there is service changes, Sea Beach riders don't have to take the express to Kings Hwy or 59th St, and back, and trains can make more stops.

I don't know if this idea was the best...

There needs to be a crossover on the (G) before Hoyt Street so trains can terminate there easily in G.O's.

Definitely....it would make life so much easier when there is construction along the Culver line. I always thought (G) trains should be able to terminate there.

That would also help when there is construction North of Hoyt--there would not be the need to have single tracked shuttles to Bedford Nostrand that run every 30 minutes.

It would make service much more consistent.

Good idea, except for almost the entire left track on Sea Beach is out. The right one is fine though.

The Broadway line needs X switches on the express tracks, I think north of Prince Street and around Union Square would be two good spots. If there's an incident at Herald Square and you wanted to turn an (N)(Q)(R) train from Brooklyn around, those trains would need to be turned all the way at Whitehall Street or even Pacific Street.
