Track Worker 3600 Hiring Process

Got the letter today to come in for medical like you guys.....list number slightly above the 270s

I called DCAS and the automated system said that this exam list will expire in 2018. Just putting that out there for the ones interested in knowing.

I'm on the list for train operator and track work. I'm leaning more towards track worker.someone in this form please convince me that I'm making the right decision.

hard decision to make man congrats on the both positions but i believe train operators get paid more i guess if your a hands on person that don't like to be in one place for a long time track worker would be the best position for you.

My brother was a Train Operator for 11 years. I've been in Track 22.

 

The difference in pay is no less then a dollar an hour.

 

Train operator you will remain clean. In between runs you will sit in the crew room, watch TV, play chess or read. Whatever floats your boat other then closing your eyes.

 

The down side is it's a very strict department with a low tolerance for mistakes. Operating a train is serious and takes years of practice on various lines and types of train to hone your skill. Also, if you have young kids, taking time off is VERY hard to do.

 

Track you will work hard and get dirty when it's time to work, meaning the trucks and trains have arrived with material and or tools. However, the overtime is plentiful. If you make a mistake someone will correct you. It's more lenient. When you get some time under your belt you can pick a specialist job where you will be trained such as crane operator, pay loader, flatbed driver (TA takes care of CDL) etc. If you have young kids and need to take a day off or there is an emergency, like your kids school calls, your one out of maybe 12 guys on a job. You let the boss know and he calls you off.

In Track you can advance quickly in supervision also.

Both girls you will most likely work nights for some time.

As a Train Operator they'll have you on different lines daily at all hours on the mornings and night. You just kind of float around.

Track, you pick a location and hours and that's it till the pick comes. Maybe a year or so. Very steady.

Keep in mind, overtime is plentiful in Track though it's pretty much on the weekends.

Top pay for Track Worker - $31.5075

Track Worker Specialist - $34.5025

Top pay for Train Operator - $34.5025

 

(Night/weekend differential not included)

Does anyone know if your almost guaranteed to get hired if you pass the medical,drug test,and there are no other issues or are they gonna only choose who they like from that group?

Once you pass drug testing,medical and sworn in to that job title you will be in track school, maybe not with the first class but youre in.

Thanks everyone for their feedback. Track worker is everything I'd want in a job but I dcided to go Train Operator. Reason being is that I've been busting my a$$ for over 21 years delivering mail and at my age I can't afford to break down any further.

Track is physically taxing when it's time to work especially at night. There is down time when waiting on trains and trucks with tools and material but when it's time to work your busting your ass (in capital construction anyway) for those couple of hours. Not to mention all the fumes.

 

If you've done your share of back breaking work and know it's not what you want to do anymore then Train Operator is the way to go.

(212) 669 1357. Select the second option, then it is very easy, providing you took the exam and know your social security #.

 

Note that they only update this on the first Sunday evening of every month.

Hey guys 2 questions.....after you complete the training course is there some type of skills test or something that you have to pass in order to get hired after the training?........and do you get paid doing training ?

You get small written tests during class that cover what was taught.

 

When I was first hired (1992) it was 2 weeks classroom and 2 weeks hands on in a train yard before going to a regular work gang.

 

The training is nothing complicated. It's all Safety, names and purposes of tools and learning about the Track layout & designs. Not complicated at all.

As per the notice of examination (http://web.mta.info/nyct/hr/archives/pdf/3600.pdf), you will be getting $20.3725/hour.
