So first day of orientation is tomorrow.

Quick question for those who went through the process.

Jeans and a button up fine or office dress code for orientation ?

What's up Marcel, well I been browsing around, doing some digging on the forum. Seems to me they don't make a big deal of it, some guys dress normal, some wear 3 piece suits. I dressed casual the both times I was at 180 Livingston. Black jeans, sweater and boots. I was talking to a few fellow union tradesmen when I was there for medical, and both were in work clothes, and no one said anything to them, and they both got sworn in for their Structure Maintainer titles.

If you look at the green sheet they gave us, there is no stated dress code for days 1 & 2. Day 3 at the training center, you have to be dressed like you're going to work. Jeans, and either solid shoes, or work boots. I'm dressing normal for orientation, I'm not going crazy. Remember we're going for an orientation for Trackman, not an orientation for Goldman Sachs lol.

If you take a look at this thread http://www.nyctransitforums.com/forums/topic/47638-so-what-comes-next-in-the-hiring-process/page-2?hl=%2Borientation+%2Bdress and scroll down to bkdirects post who is a trackworker, and he pretty much says the same thing. Other titles such as Conductor or Train Operator, they might have different standards, as far as orientation dress code. Anyway man, hope you had a good Easter, I'll see you there tomorrow.

OT was tapered off due to public scrutiny and end of fiscal year, on top of money diverted to a yet to be approved  MTA capital budget(NOT TRACK CAPITAL).

Thanks man, just finished up orientation today, wasn't that bad. Start class tomorrow, I wore my work boots and jeans both days, didn't bother me a bit. There were a ton of conductors at the orientation, they all had a basic dress code to abide by, light blue button down shirts, dark blue slacks, and black shoes. We had a packed house, close to 100 people between 3 different titles. Track, Structure Maintainers, and Conductors.

I read the articles, I mean a LIRR Track Foreman making $333,000 in a calendar year is ridiculous. If it's all legit time, you're talking 90+ hour weeks, close to 5000 hours in a year, for that kind of money. 6 days a week, and 15+ hours a day. I love money, but not enough to do that to myself. I'd be happy with a 100K at top pay, with reasonable OT, where I still somewhat have a life in the process. But yea, those kind of earners is what draws the attention of the watchdogs, not necessarily the guys making 90-110K a year. To be honest in NYC with the cost of living in any borough, 100K is not allot of money. It's good money, but it's not Park Avenue money.

Question for anyone who has gone from conductor to trackworker or trackworker to conductor.

Do you have to "retire" from your original title to go to the other ? And if you are not happy with the new title you chose can you return to the old one?

The department for Track worker is M.O.W. (Maintenance of way)

Conductors and Train Operators are RTO (Rapid Transit Operations)

You can go from Track worker to Train Operator as a promotion from Track. If you don't like it you've one year to return to Track with your original seniority. Not the same job you picked though. That goes up for bid.

In order to go to conductor or another title outside of your department you have to resign (quit) from Track worker and go thru the ENTIRE hiring process over.

If you don't like the new position there are no guarantees of getting your Track workers job back.

In the 3/28 class and first week of school was good. Lot of information in regards to time/sick time/vacation time/personal time etc.

A lot of safety info and general info about the job. Also gets you into the habit of signing that attendance and payroll sheet.

Suppose to have our pick sometime next week.

Fingers crossed hoping I can get E180th because I stay by wakefield in the BX and that ride out to the school and get their by 7 is crazy.

So far so good though

Transit and bridges and tunnels cc titles  falls under DCAS, whereas the whole MTA doesn't. The rule is that you are allowed access to your previous title for up to one year if that new title requires and new probationary period. You must have had complete that previous titles probationary period 1st. So only if a track worker completes his probationary period , get promoted to train operator...then resigned or gets fired from school car or anytime within TOs probation period....he can go back to track under DCAS/TA personnel rules...key is you must be PERMANENT at the job to fall back on it. these rules typically only refer to civil service titles(hourly, supervisory or managerial)

To everyone who is waiting to get called:

Here is an update from DCAS, as of 4/3/2016:

The last number certified off of the list is  1896.

The last number appointed into the 3/28/2016 class is 521.

Good luck everyone !

Marcel, and myself are in the same class. To give you an idea, the lowest list number in my class that I know of is 426, I'm 490. The highest number as I mentioned above is 521. There's only 27 people in the class. Now mind you the last number that made it into the October 26th class was 415. That person ( 426 ) obviously missed the February class, which he should have made, meaning he had a medical hold. Yes you can miss one-two classes if you procrastinate. Meaning you will loose class seniority. Once you are sworn in your DCAS list number has no value. Seniority goes by when you were sworn into the class. So if you wind up on a medical hold, get it fixed ASAP.

Steve, Marcel. Is your class coming to the general pick? Or are you getting X jobs later on.

Hey man what's up. From what it sounded like last week, we are getting the X jobs, but I'm not 100% certain yet. What I do know is we are getting our seniority numbers this week, for our yard picks to finish off training.

Great Steve. If you get the X jobs your class may wind up with some good spots, prob not the same for my 27 at the back of the current list going down to pick.

Best of luck. I was in the Bronx for the yard training and although the commute was crazy for me, the guys, and bosses were all good to us. Listen to those senior guys. You'll learn a lot,( learning more now being actually at my job ), and be mindful of the safety of yourself and your gang. See you in the hole! Best of luck.

According to the lady who interviewed me, I was the first one sworn in for the 3/28 class. Unless someone who was on a medical hold got their seniority number restored. I still should be pretty high on that list. I'd like to get Coney Island, it's about a 45 minute bus ride from me. That's good to hear that the older guys are welcoming. Makes me look more forward to the rest of training.

As far as listening to the senior guys that I do know, even with my 15+ years of construction experience, I don't know shit when it comes to this. I'm not expecting to get a great position from the start. I'd rather learn from the bottom anyway, it's the best way to know any trade from the inside out. A couple of years down the road once I have my CDL B, I'll definitely go for one of those specialist dual rate jobs. Particularly the welder/burner job.

I love tools in general, and I'm really looking forward to working with that rail saw.

Thanks man, I'll definitely see you down there one of these days.

Hey guys, has anyone with a list number of 700 or higher gotten their letter/email yet? I'm 75x on the list and haven't been reached out to yet. Getting a little concerned..

Figs, not to come off as an a**hole, but read the thread dude.

The last list number appointed into the class I am currently in is  521.

You're in the 750+ range, now from what I understand there is a class at the end of April. The highest number I could see getting appointed into that class would be in the 600-610 range max. But it could be higher or lower.

Depending on how the list moves, in regards to how many ppl turn down the job, fail the drug test etc. You could be in the class after the April one. Or possibly 1 or 2 classes after. It all depends. It took a whole year just to go through 500 people.

The only time you have to worry is if you call DCAS, and the last list number appointed is past your list number. Especially if you didn't get a letter by that point. Just relax dude, the list is moving slow, but you're in a good place number wise. It's better to be 750 than 7500, think of it that way. Just live your life dude, you'll get your first letter soon enough.

Even when you eventually get your letter, and go down for your first drug test, you might have to take a second one like I did. Track dept moves slow as far as people retiring. The classes are created as to the needs of Transit.

First, thank you for posting this information...one less exam for me to worry about. In addition, my list # is 28**, therefore at this point, I'm just hoping that the list will get extended for two more years.

Second, in conjunction with one of the other moderators, we are working on putting together a table for the site so this question does not get asked over and over, not only in this employment threads, but the others as well, not only based on the information from DCAS, but what the members are saying as well.

my brother took his name off the list and recently went down to reinstate it. His list number is mid 400's. He went down to Livingston last week and put in a written consent. He just called DCAS and the automated system still says his name has been removed. Who can he call to se if his request was put thru ? Ms. Robinson ?

Just an update so people waiting, and incomers know. Your seniority number does go by your DCAS list number. We got our seniority numbers today, and there is a person at my table who is exactly one DCAS list number higher than mine.

When the numbers were issues his seniority number was exactly one number higher than mine. If I didn't know that small little fact about his DCAS number, I probably wouldn't have realized the seniority number, in relation to your DCAS list number.

But the good news for anyone waiting is the seniority numbers in my class are in the low 1800's. According to a few people on here, Track Dept has to maintain around 2000 employees, according to federal regulations.

So as long as jobs keep opening up, the classes should move at a steady pace.

Which then kinda makes sense why my seniority number was second to last.

I just hope when we get to pick I can choose the BX because this bx-bk for training is rough with the time I have to get up in the mornings to make it there on time.

Also to add to what Steve is saying, there are a ton of people retiring .. like seriously we met a bunch of people who were heading out or planning to retire this year so spots will be there just keep your eyes open and watch for that letter or email.
