Planned Subway Service Changes

9-car trains were indeed looked at. How would you deal with the proximity of the yard lead and the crossover south of Metropolitan?

I mean if we’re going full hypothetical here, I would have removed it and reinstalled it south enough to allow 600’ at some point in the future while they were doing the FP bridge rebuild. I’d have extended the platforms accordingly. A fun ancillary benefit would be that (M) entrance speeds would be slightly higher — they’d be dealing with new (probably D20) switches, and would be stopping before the end of the recessive GT-to-bumper series.

The yard lead doesn’t cut in until south of the bridge, so I don’t think it’d come into play here.

This is all to say that Canarsie is a minefield of missed opportunities.

Turning at 72nd will gum up service if trains are behind it, or create a trainload of dissatisfied passengers if there aren’t. When we can just use 8 car trains on 8 min headways, why complicate things?

Yup. That said, messing with that area should really have been done for the (L) shutdown. A 13% increase in (J)(M)(Z) service can’t be laughed at. Cars can easily be obtained from the (R)

Absolutely.  Adding 60 feet to Metropolitan would have done a lot because most of the rest of the platforms would be tight fits, but could handle 540 foot trains with minimal (if any) extensions needed.

Wouldn't the southern part of the crossovers be on the curve?

Yes -- not the end of the world though. Switches on non-tangent track exist everywhere in the system -- yards especially. Won't be a cheap piece of ironwork, but I don't think that's a showstopper.

They could've just ran the (Q) in two sections

1. Between Stillwell ave and prospect park as a shuttle

2.Between Stillwell ave and 96th st 2nd ave via the (D) line and (F) line to Lextington ave 63rd st then resume normal service via 2nd ave

Or would it be too much trains on 6th ave

They could of done this instead of suspending it in manhattan.

There is no need for a northern (Q) section since you have the (M) on SAS and the (W) along with the (N) and (R) is enough to cover Broadway on those weekends

The (2) is also listed as running every 12 minutes this weekend. Has the agency announced when a route is cut to every 12 minutes before? This is the first I remember seeing of it.

Still, it sucks to be a lower White Plains Road rider. Having the (5) cut and having the (2) reduced from 8 TPH during the day to 5... That's going from 13 TPH to 5, or some 72% percent reduction in service! Is there also work being done on the connection from the WPR line to the Jerome line, or is the flagging on WPR that bad? If it's just the latter, that's overkill.

In addition to Comic Con, City Field is hosting a concert for Korean pop band BTS, so major events at each end of the line. They should have really canceled the (7) line G.O this weekend smh.

Usually when the Mets have home games there's no G.O on the (7).

I said the same thing, but there is a big problem:

Adding it to the back end would possibly result in it being the weekend before Thanksgiving (which is on its earliest possible date this year) as the weekend of Nov. 10-11 includes Veterans Day, a holiday that might have precluded pushing it back to that weekend.

The Agency had every line under a GO for 4th of July and last XMAS IIRC, don't think that stuff matters to them.

Veterans Day is different.  There are likely a lot of groups who might go as far as to take the (MTA) to court if they tried to push this G.O. back to that particular holiday to force them to move it back to the originally scheduled weekend.

I think you put too much stock in people's annoyances in service changes becoming more than inconveniences. If there are service diversions on the Veteran's Day weekend, it will likely be due to the MTA's hard deadline of April 2019. When the western end of the Canarsie line closes, there really cannot be any major service changes that impact any of the primary or secondary bridging lines. That means they cannot have 53rd Street, Flushing or the Williamsburg Bridge out of service for long periods of time for maintenance or upgrades, hence the blitz of weekend work on almost every line as of late.

The agency actually put out a press release about the (7) line work this weekend. At least they're being responsive...

MTA NYC Transit & LIRR Offering Robust Alternate Service & Customer Outreach During 7 Line CBTC Installation Work This Weekend

Additional Subway and Bus Services to Serve Javits Center for Comic Con; Visitors to BTS Concert at Citi Field Encouraged to take Special LIRR Service

MTA New York City Transit is performing critical work each weekend this month to upgrade the 500,000-rider-a-day (7) line with modern Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) signaling, and has developed robust alternate service and customer outreach plans to help New Yorkers get around, including to two events in Manhattan and Queens this weekend.

Once installed on the (7) line by the end of this year, CBTC will allow for more frequent and more reliable service for all users of the (7) line, which currently serves approximately 500,000 customers per weekday between Queens and Manhattan.

The recently announced addition of more daily service to the (7) line for next year, for example, is incumbent upon the successful installation of CBTC on the line.

Due to the 24/7 nature of the New York City subway system and patterns of high ridership during peak weekday hours, work such as this must be done at times of lower than average ridership, such as weekends.  All efforts are taken to avoid work during major travel holidays and events for which ridership may approach weekday levels. While this weekend’s ridership is not expected to reach typical weekday levels, special accommodations are being made with alternate service options and customer outreach efforts for attendees of this weekend’s Comic Con at the Javits Center (which started Thursday Oct. 4 and ends Sunday Oct. 7) and Saturday’s BTS concert at Citi Field.

“Getting on with the work to complete the CBTC signal upgrades to the (7) line will bring more frequent and reliable service to half a million daily riders – including future Javits and Citi Field attendees – for years to come,” said NYC Transit Andy Byford.  “We thank our customers for their patience; working this weekend is critical to keeping the implementation of CBTC on track, and we’ve developed extensive plans for alternate service to help people get around, including extra subway and bus services to help get people to Javits, special LIRR service to Citi Field, signage in multiple languages, and extra personnel to help guide everyone.”

Byford added: “We’re thrilled that so many people have come to rely upon the new Hudson Yards  station with its easy access to the Javits Center; pushing on with CBTC without further delay delivers benefits for everyone sooner.”

This weekend from 12:15 am on Saturday to 4:30 a.m. on Monday, in support of critical CBTC installation work to keep the project on track for completion by the end of this year, the (7) train will run as follows:

The (7) will run between Queensboro Plaza and Flushing-Main St, with Flushing-Main St bound trains running express from Queensboro Plaza to 74 St-Broadway, and regular service between 74 St-Broadway and Flushing Main St.  The (7) train will not run in Manhattan or Long Island City.

Flushing-bound (7) trains will skip 33 St, 40 St, 46 St, 52 St and 69 St.  For service to those stations from Manhattan, take the (7) train to 61 St-Woodside Av or 74 St-Roosevelt Av and transfer to a Queensboro Plaza-bound (7). For service from those stations to Flushing, take the (7) train to 61 St-Woodside Av or Queensboro Plaza and transfer to a Flushing-bound (7) train.

Regular and special travel alternatives for this weekend include:

(E) , (F), (N) and (W) trains provide subway service between Manhattan and Queens, with (7) train customers able to transfer at Queensboro Plaza or 74 St-Roosevelt Av.

Additional train service is being scheduled to further help customers: The 42 St Shuttle (S) will operate overnight (it normally does not), and (W) trains will run from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, between Whitehall St and Ditmars Blvd (the (W) does not normally run on weekends).

Shuttle buses will run frequently – every five minutes during times of peak ridership – in two sections: In Manhattan between Times Square-42 St and 34 St-Hudson Yards, and in Queens between Queensboro Plaza and Vernon Blvd-Jackson Av.  For details on shuttle bus stops, check the MTA Weekender’s (7) train entry here.

In Manhattan, there will be additional service on the M34 SBS bus, which serves the Javits Center directly.

Standby buses will be available to supplement planned shuttle and M34 service if needed.

The M12 bus between Columbus Circle and Chelsea also serves the Javits Center directly.

The Javits Center is also served by 34 St-Penn Station, three blocks east of the Center, with the  and  subway lines, as well as the Long Island Rail Road.

For service between Manhattan and Citi Field for the BTS concert on Saturday, Oct. 6, customers are encouraged to take special Long Island Rail Road service on the Port Washington Branch to the Mets-Willets Pt station.  Click here for the special LIRR timetable.  Customers may also transfer to a Mets-Willets Pt-bound (7) train from the (E)(F)(N) and (W) trains at 74 St-Roosevelt Av or Queensboro Plaza.

Tickets to Mets-Willets Pt from Penn Station on Saturday will be at the special CityTicket fare of $4.25.  LIRR service to Mets-Willets Pt from Long Island will be on regular off-peak fares. Fans can purchase CityTicket at Penn Station or Woodside ticket windows or ticket machines with cash or credit/debit/ATM cards, or anywhere, anytime on Oct. 6, using the MTA eTix app. CityTicket cannot be purchased onboard a train; LIRR tickets purchased onboard the train will be the full on-board off-peak fare, which is $6.25 one-way or $12 round trip between Penn Station and Mets-Willets Pt.

Service alternative details for upcoming weekends of (7) train CBTC work will be available next week.

Extensive customer service and outreach plans are in effect for this weekend’s events.  Special graphics and instructions are being developed to guide customers on social media, announcements will be made in stations and on buses, and wayfinders and other customer service personnel will be deployed at strategic locations to help customers complete their trips.

NYC Transit personnel are also reaching out to the NYPD to assist with traffic enforcement to ensure the smooth operation of both shuttle and regular buses, including the enforcement of dedicated bus lanes.

Customers with questions may reach out to NYC Transit or LIRR personnel by calling 511 for multilingual assistance between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. on any day, or by tweeting in English to @NYCTSubway, @NYCTBus or @LIRR.

As always, latest service information is available at https://new.mta.info or via the MYmta smartphone app, and customers can receive customized subway, bus and commuter rail status emails or texts by signing up at http://www.MyMTAalerts.com.  Additionally, TripPlanner+ is an online tool that provides customized travel guidance based on available service and takes weekend service changes into account.

I sure hope so. There have been times I've attempted to take the M34SBS to the Javits Center and it was horrible. The bus lane was blocked by the construction of the new buildings in the area,  the M34SBS was just sitting in traffic, from 8th/9th Ave to 11th Ave.  (Not to mention there are always gaps in service where walking will get you there before a bus even arrives)

One of the other issues with buses is that once you've boarded and that door closes you're held captive in traffic until the next stop. In many cases, it's quicker to just hop back off and walk, but the B/O has already pulled away.

They're running the (Q) in two sections during the overnight hours this week. The split is at Atlantic Avenue, with the Brighton Line section running every 30 minutes. Gonna suck for Brighton riders.

Also, if they're ending (Q) trains at Atlantic Avenue from the north on the 4th Ave tracks, it might have made been easier to combine that (Q) with the (R) , since the (R) is going over the Bridge for about one hour before the shuttle starts to Whitehall, leaving a one hour gap to those stations in the NB direction. I mean, the (R) would make all stops along with the (N) , so it would be similar to the overnight (Q) pattern. The issue is likely for those going north of 57th, I guess.
