Interesting G.O for March

SIGNAL REPAIRS
Mar 13 - 16, Fri 11:30 PM to Mon 5 AM
(A)(C)(E) No service at 50 St, 42 St/Port Authority, 34 St-Penn Station, 23 St and 14 St
(C) Service is suspended
(E) No service at Court Sq-23 St, Lexington Av/53 St, 5 Av/53 St and 7 Av

(A) trains run between 207 St and Far Rockaway/Ozone Park, running local in Brooklyn and via the (D) in both directions between W 4 St and 59 St-Columbus Circle, making local stops at 14 St and 23 St.
(E) trains run between Jamaica Center and Queens Plaza, and via the (R) in both directions to/from Whitehall St, the last stop.

(M) Special service runs days/evenings between Metropolitan Av and 47-50 Sts, via the (D) to/from 59 St-Columbus Circle and local via the (C) to/from 168 St

Free shuttle buses run between Court Sq and Queens Plaza.

(M) via CPW? YAY!!

But, what I don't get is why the (MTA) wouldn't do the following:

(B) runs special service from 168 to 59, to replace (C)

(D) runs normally

(F) runs normally

(M) runs normal weekend pattern

(A) runs via (D) from 59 to W4, stops at Spring

(C) runs from Chambers to Euclid

(E) runs from Lex-53 to Jamaica

shuttle buses run on 2 routes:

ROUTE #1

  • Lex-53 (E)(6)
  • 5-53
  • 57 St (F)(M)
  • 59 St (A)(B)(D)
  • 50 St
  • 42 St (1)(2)(3)(N)(Q)(R)(7)
  • 34 St (1)(2)(3)
  • 23 St
  • 14 St (L)
  • W 4 St (A)(D)(F)(M)

ROUTE #2

  • 59 St (A)(B)(D)(1)
  • 42 St (1)(2)(3)(N)(Q)(R)(7)
  • 34 St (1)(2)(3)
  • 14 St (L)
  • W 4 St (A)(D)(F)(M)

ROUTE #3

Is there a problem with the above?

There is no need to run the (B) because you already have the (M) running on weekends along 6th av to provide service for the (L) project and besides the (B) doesn't run on weekends and it would be more easier to just reroute the (M) since it's already there on weekends. I am not sure if the (E) train can terminate at lexington av-53rd st. It probably can, but then it would probably have to run on a single track and that would mean reduced service meaning every 20 minutes probably. That wouldn't go well for passengers along QBL. There is no need to run shuttle buses in Manhattan because you have alternative subway lines that you can use while the 8th av line is out. So I am guessing the spring st subway station would be closed as well during this weekend outage. And why bother running shuttle buses between Court sq and Queens Plaza, it's only 1 stop. People can use just the (7) to connect to/from the (E) at 74th st/roosevelt av and I know this would be backtracking but take the (7) to times sq 42nd st and transfer to the (E) there for those who need service to Jamaica Center from court sq 23rd st. You can walk also to Queens Plaza from Court Sq, it's only about a 5 to 6 minute walk between stations. I know if it's cold outside it's a different story, but if it's nice outside then it won't be no problem.

Maybe it was removed for modifications:

They could have closed Spring St, Canal St, World Trade Center/Chambers St, Fulton St, and High Street as well and expand on the signal repair corridor to extend to Jay St-MetroTech. All that would be needed is to reroute the (A) via the (F) line after West 4 St to Jay St-MetroTech. However, I think the (A) was made local on 6 Av to allow not only the changeover back to 8 Av service south of West 4 St, but to not miss the (L) transfer at 14 St, especially considering that the 6 Av Express doesn't really save time (a minute at most). Now you'll have the (A)(F)(M) all on the local track all the way to 34 St. Three routes with three different frequencies = recipe for disaster!

(A) - Every 10 minutes

(F) - Every 12 minutes

(M) - Every 8 minutes.

Maybe this is why the (E) had to be rerouted to Broadway (to not have four lines stacked on a single track).

When large blocks of service interruptions are done, especially over along line segment, there is a higher chance of getting lots of work done.:.if construction projects are well planned.

Let's wait and see to what modification they had to make. In this G.O. before it got taken down off the website, it doesn't mention the (A) train stopping at spring st so I had a scenario in mind in which the (A) train would run via the (F) between W4th st and Jay st-metrotech but who knows. And another thing is i wonder if there is going to be any work being done along the 53rd st tunnel while the (E) is being rerouted.

With regard to the 53 St Tunnel, it would be ideal to piggy-back some maintenance work during this closure

Service overview for 2020

From ~9:45 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday from March 20 to Dec. 21, 2020:

The F will operate all weekends between 179 St and Church Av, where F service will end
The F won’t operate south of Church Av, from Church Av to Coney Island-Stillwell Av
We won’t be working on select weekends, so F service will be normal on:

  • Easter/Passover (4/10-4/13)
  • July 4th weekend (7/3-7/6)
  • Select October weekends (10/9-10/26)
  • Thanksgiving weekend (11/27-11/30)
  • Weekend after Christmas (12/25-12/28)

Remember that during beach season (5/23-9/14), we make changes to subway service to accommodate increased ridership, including:

N will run local on 4 Av most weekends between Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr and 59 St, providing F transfer at 4 Av-9 St @RR503 It's rare that they think of things like this.

Other subway work to be aware of:

  • N trains terminate at 86 St until 4/27: The N is undergoing Superstorm Sandy-related repairs and this project will overlap with the beginning of the Culver Line Signal Modernization service changes. Use the D or Q trains to get to Coney Island through 4/27.
  • D trains replace F trains between W 4 St in Manhattan and Church Av in Brooklyn (select April and May weekends)
  • Church Av-bound F trains run express from Smith-9 Sts to Church Av (dates to be determined), bypassing the 4 Av-9 St transfer point
  • F will run via the A and E lines: In July, we’ll start a project to rehabilitate the Rutgers Tunnel, fixing damage from Superstorm Sandy (specific dates and service changes to be announced)
  • Coney Island-bound N and R trains run express from Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr to 36 St, bypassing the 4 Av-9 St transfer point (5/29-6/1, 6/5-6/8, 6/19-6/22)

Culver Link bus

If you’re traveling in Southern Brooklyn, the free Culver Link bus will be your best option. The bus will operate all weekend long, running along the F line from Church Av to Coney Island-Stillwell Av.

There will be two bus options:

The Culver Link F1 will make all local stops. Check the destination sign on these buses; headed south-bound, some buses will go all the way to Coney Island (will say “Coney Island”), and some will only operate to Kings Highway (will say “Kings Hwy”).
The Culver Link F2 will run express from Memorial Day weekend until the weekend after Labor Day, ending on 9/13, for easier beach access. This bus will stop at Church Av, W 8 St and Coney Island-Stillwell Av Station.'

For 7 Av, take the A or D or use the nearby 57 St-7 Av station.

For local* service in Brooklyn, take the A instead.

Key transfer stations:
• 59 St-Columbus Circle ad | A D M 1 (2 late nights)
• Times Sq-42 St ad | E 1 2 7
• 34 St-Herald Sq ad | A D E M
• Fulton St ad | A 2
• Roosevelt Av ad | E 7
• Lexington Av/59 St or 14 St-Union Sq E 6

Travel tip:
For 14 St (8 Av) take the (L)  or M14 SBS to/from 6 Av where (A)(M)  trains are available.

*From 10 PM to 5 AM each night, Manhattan-bound (A) trains skip Kingston-Throop Avs, Franklin Av, Clinton-Washington Avs, and Lafayette Av.

So I am guessing (A) trains won't stop at Spring st during that weekend G.O.

Via the (A) and (E) lines? So I'm guessing theres another 6th Av shutdown in the future?

It looks like there will be another 6th av shutdown in the future but the (F) normally runs via the (Q) and (D) lines, and the (D) runs via the (A)(C) lines then via the (F) line whenever the 6th av line is shutdown. (F) trains running via the (A) and (E) lines might relate to track work being done along the 6th av local line.

Or they could be doing that G.O they did back in 2018 when the (D) ran via the (C) between 59th Street and West 4th Street and via the (F) south of West 4th Street while the (F) Trains run via the (D) between West 4th Street and Coney Island.

FIY there is supposed to be a 6th Avenue Shutdown G.O coming this Spring but I don't think its related to this.

All that switching because they cant be bothered to add one switch at Broadway-Lafayette?

Here is the 8th ave signal repair work for next weekend in a more detailed format explaining what they are doing.

Planned Service Changes March 13 – 16, Friday 11:45 PM to Monday 5 AM There will be no 8 Av (A)(C)(E) service at 50 St, 42 St, 34 St, 23 St, and 14 St stations. (A) rerouted via 6 Av; (E) rerouted via Broadway.

What you need to know about your service:

What’s happening?

Signal equipment near W 4 St on the (A)(C)(E) Eighth Av Line keeps causing frequent delays and must be fixed. Our repair crews need a full weekend of uninterrupted track access to complete this work. Targeted fixes like this are necessary as we move toward a modernized signaling system across the subway network. While we repair our legacy signal system, we’re using this outage to do prep work for a modern Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) signal system on the line. We’ll also perform structural inspections and track work.

Where will service run?

(A) will be rerouted via (D) between 59 St-Columbus Circle and W 4 St. Trains will make local (F)(M) stops at 23 St and 14 St. (C) is replaced in Manhattan by rerouted (M) and overnight (A) local service along Central Park West. (C) will not run. (E) will be rerouted via (R) between Queens Plaza and Whitehall St, the last stop. (M) will be rerouted via (D) between 47-50 Sts and 59 St-Columbus Circle, and via (C) local to/from 168 St, the last stop (days/evenings).

What are the best travel alternatives?

Use 6 Av (D)(F) stations to connect with rerouted A. Use Broadway (N)(Q)(R) stations to connect with rerouted (E). Manhattan West Side, Penn Station and Port Authority Bus Terminal: Use 7 Av Line (1)(2)(3) and transfer between (1)(A)(M) at 59 St-Columbus Circle and (1)(2)(3)(E) at Times Sq-42 St. Lower Manhattan: (A) will make regular (A)(C) stops. Transfer between (A)(E) at 34 St-Herald Sq and (E) (at Cortlandt St (R)) and (A) at Chambers St. Brooklyn: (A) trains will serve all (A)(C) stops in Brooklyn.

What else should I know?

(M) customers headed to/from the Upper East Side: Get there with (Q) service via transfer at 34 St-Herald Sq (F)(M)(Q) or Lexington Av/63 St (F)(Q).

(A)(C) and (D) customers north of 59 St-Columbus Circle: Nightly FASTRACK service changes will take place Mar 16 – 20 and Mar 23 – 27, affecting (A)(C) service between 59 St and 207 St and (D) service between 59 St and 161 St in the Bronx. For more details visit, mta.info.
