Hoboken: Girl Struck by Train

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Published: August 7, 2007

A 6-year-old girl was hit by a light-rail train in Hoboken yesterday, the authorities said. The girl, who was not identified by the authorities, was struck by a northbound Hudson-Bergen Light Rail train about 10:45 a.m., said Dan Stessel, a spokesman for New Jersey Transit, which operates the line. The girl and her mother had been trying to cross the street; the mother stopped at a crosswalk but the girl did not, Mr. Stessel said. He said the crosswalk’s lights and bells were operating at the time. The girl, who was critically injured, was taken to Jersey City Medical Center and later transferred to University Hospital in Newark.

Here's a more in depth, detailed article by the Jersey Journal.

No wonder there was a mess of sirens when I was around Medical Center yesterday. Now after reading it this morning, makes things even worse now.

Since this was a Tonnelle Avenue bound train, trains going northbound usually go in at about 30 MPH into 9th. NJT will most likely make trains slow down to about 5 MPH right before that crossing. Many ppl do cross there, sometimes just to go from Jersey City and into Hoboken.

But in the case of the girl, sad that she got hit but lucky she didn't go under the train. Really have to becareful with HBLR cause in some parts trains come in at a fast pace of speed for stopping at platform that aren't really long but since these trains have good brakes, thats what can give the advantage of going faster.
