Should PBS aka Channel 13 in NYC area continue to get government funding?

They're clearly misinformed....

I know you agree with Romney but this is America dont they have the right to voice their disagreements? I admit it might be 'low" to protest using Elmo, Big Bird and company.

They should seriously take the high road of Fred Rogers in this clip from 1969 addressing a hearing in front of Congress for his plea to save PBS.

These are only proposed cuts. They should really relax. Nothing is set in stone.

Guys heard of the Million Man, Million Moms, etc. marches of Washington DC in last 20 years?

Now add in (no joke!) the Million Muppet March" for Sat. 11/3/12 to protest the proposed cuts to PBS.

Over/Under 3 muppets people getting arrested in that march....

Million Muppet March.... lol.... aye, people can do what they want...

All I know is, you will never see me in a march for anything.... It gives people an avenue to show their asses (sometimes even literally :( ).....

But to compare this in importance to the Million Man March, in my opinion is a disgrace.

Totally agreed. I mean good god, it's one friggin network, no one's rights is being oppressed. Like I said before, PBS should not be an excuse to teach kids stuff they should be taught in school. Plus there are basic cable channels like Discovery and History that have some educational shows, PBS is not the monopoly on all informative content as it used to be. Finally, if people still donates money to keep the stations running, then there's no need for government assistance. People need to get their f'ing priorities strait.

I'm not saying people shouldn't go protest in favor of their beliefs, but this isn't a very productive way to be doing it. Start out with a fund or something to that avail.

Well, for some schools, throwing money at them won't help if they still fail. It's either the fault of the teacher, kids or a combination of both. If there were stricter standards for both students and teachers, then maybe schools won't be as bad as they are. NYC pays how much to the DOE and what do we get? Among the worst or one of the worst school grades as a whole. If I'm paying high amounts of taxes, I'd want an option of which program/service I want to send my money to.

True, The public school system have been crap ever since before I was born. It was even worse for me since I was in special ed,always the same work over and over and over again,it just made learning uninterested nothing different and the teachers for some reason did not want to work, I had learning problems but I wasn't retarded to figure out what was going on here.

@MHV, Joe: No need for the personal attacks. It's not that serious.

As to the "issue" at hand here, you guys can wax poetic until the cows come home about the necessity of PBS or how reducing funding to the station will reduce the debt, but in the end, it won't matter in the slightest either way. If PBS were to go off the air tomorrow, it wouldn't mean that programs would be lost. If anything, Disney Junior or Nick Jr. would gladly pick up said shows, especially considering their popularity. Also, as has already been mentioned, PBS expenses (and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting as a whole) are such a small portion of the federal budget, it's not exactly lowering the debt. You can't pay off a trillion dollar debt by cutting a couple hundred million.

Lance, as long as one or the other, or others say things like "You're not Americans because you're indoctrinated by Commies" or "You're a racist because you call people savages", then it's going to go on and on. And I'll admit that I've written things like that, so I know the feelings that people have when they write things like.

As for this topic, you're right on that cutting PBS won't make a dent on the deficit.

However, I think it's more educational than other channels.

Disney is all about cartoons and teen shows. The Discovery channel is all about reality shows (Cash Cab, American Chopper, Deadliest Catch, Dirty Jobs, Moonshiners, Lobster Wars, Swamp Loggers, Sons of Guns, Auction Kings), and so is the History channel (Ice Road Truckers, Pawn Stars, Cajun Pawn Stars, Ax Men, American Pickers, Mountain Men, American Restoration, Top Shot, and Top Gear). These two in particular have long been stripped of their educational programs. Like in many other channels, reality shows now reign.

Exactly, PBS isn't the authority on all things kids/education. Plus what person is going to be watching PBS 24/7 anyway? Like I said before, they can keep funding for individual programs, but I don't see the need to fund the whole network.

As for the spending, sure it's a drop in the bucket, but the spending overall needs to be cut [and I would include the military in some cases - like pulling back on the bases across the globe like in Germany and South Korea]. Some things are just a luxury that we can't afford anymore. Small programs individually means nothing, but if you gathered them all together, I'm sure the total would be pretty significant. "Cuts have to be made somewhere."

That the point. PBS is one of the last channels/networks in America in which reality shows has not taken over prime time programming. Up until few years ago, History Channel Discovery Channel used to be great. Now only time you avoid the "reality crap" is Saturday/Sunday afternoons and weekday mornings on those channels.

PBS works because shows like "Sesame Street " would not had lasted almost 45 years on a regular commerical network under pressure to get high ratings. Not to mention showing programs like opera, classic music and even early rock and roll/R&B specials that are not found anywhere else. And most important provides culutral and educational programming to all viewers, many who can't afford digital cable.

We can dispute how to fund PBS but one thing is clear. It's a success and needs to stay.
