Should the Manhattan bridge and Williamsburg bridges be replaced?

The fault line under 125th really isn't a big deal. You have to take into account the land mass types that can cause a wise range of effects of an earthquake. Here in the east, it's mostly bedrock. Hard, solid earth where a small earthquake can ripple across a greater distance and less shaking compared to the west coast, where the ground is softer and will cause massive shaking.

To the comment of the MannyB with tracks on the outside compared to in the middle, it's a better distribution of weight. It was built with four tracks. Having two on each side will distribute the weight across the span using its support cables, rather than having the weight rely on the bridge's frame. It's Engineering and the engineers knew what they were doing. Trains are heavier and more frequent now and she's still holding strong.

Perhaps if they were to cancel the LIRR Eastside project(what is the point of it anyway)?

 

 

The majority of LIRR passengers have to go to the East Side. Thats the point of it. Not for nothing, these two bridges have had rehabilitation projects done which precludes them from needing replacements (for now), and since the NYCDOT is responsible for maintaining those bridges, cancelling the EAS will do nothing but piss off the federal government who funded a MTA project (two completely different agencies).

 

The new WTC complex will not be done in our lifetime!

 

 

Depends on who lifetimes. If youre 90 then yea it might not be done in your lifetime, but unless something happens to you (god forbid) you will see the new complex.

DOT did a inspection of the bridge recently, the manhattan bridge is STILL sadly in bad shape, with the weight of the R160's and R68's its making it worse, plus they might have to shut the south side down again forcing the (N)/(Q) to go via tunnel in the future, i don't know how true it is, but i do see it happening in the future, this is why the MTA should have went with that plan of making a connector between the tunnels north of dekalb av and the (F) tube

I agree with you. All those trains running on those bridges 24/7 must be stressing out those cables. Perhaps the MTA should only use the middle to tracks on either side to take some of that weight off and redirect some of those lines via tunnel. Keep the (B) and (Q), and redirect the rest.

Uh what? Where in Manhattan are you going to find the space to drill in a new tunnel segment to allow the south side of the bridge to connect to the 6th av side? And how are you going to get the (D) back to 6th av if it's going thru the tunnel? Even if you had only the 6th av lines on the bridge, the tunnel can't handle that many trains at once.

There is no need to replace the Manhattan or Williamsburg Bridges. They should have some retrofitting and the subway tracks on the Manhattan Bridge should just be relocated to the center lane. The former location of the tracks could turned into a roadway.

Easier said than done. Even if a single road lane is the same as a rail row, you can only fit 3 tracks. That's not a fair trade off. You would still need a lot of work to restructure the bridge to fit all 4 tracks in the center. You may as well leave the Manny b alone. Ideally having trains run on both sides simultainiously should be enough without the need to rearrange anything.

The Manhattan portion of the bridge runs deeper into Manhattan than the Brooklyn Bridge. where are you going to put the ramps? Just use the local roads.

 

those ramps on the Brooklyn bridge arent original to when it opened, find a way to add em in there like they did for the brooklyn bridge.
