RtrainBlues Posted January 6, 2013 Share #1 Posted January 6, 2013 The train is shutting down between Franklin Ave & Flatbush Ave late nights from 10pm -5am Jan 21-25. It's troubling that the service advisory mentions to take the B44 bus instead without any mention of additional shuttle buses and/or if the B44 is fare-free. It's as if the MTA is saying "you're on your own" to these residents: - Will the B44 bus run fare-free between Franklin Ave & Flatbush Ave? If not, riders who already used their free transfer on a pay-per-ride (for example on a crosstown Manhattan bus) will have to pay a double fare for the B44. - The B44 goes to hourly headways after 2am. Does the MTA expect riders to wait an hour for a bus at that time? Or to walk about a mile from the nearest Q train stop at that hour? Not sure many people would feel comfortable walking to Newkirk/Nostrand at that hour. - Will a full subway load full of #2 passengers reasonably fit on a B44 bus at Franklin Ave? Subways have 10 cars to them, so it seems to me you'd need at least 3-4 times the regular B44 service (since some, but not all, passengers may modify their routine.) This sets a troubling precedent for what they'll do for similar outer-borough Fast tracks throughout 2013. If you're going to shut down the train, you pay the money and you get shuttle buses. This will be a total fiasco with the N and R train shutdown in May 2013 if they try to say to squeeze onto the B63 bus at that hour. Not going to happen - you'll need tons and tons of shuttle buses. Quill Depot Posted January 6, 2013 Share #2 Posted January 6, 2013 You can still pay for the bus and transfer. The may boost headways.
Guest Lance Posted January 6, 2013 Share #3 Posted January 6, 2013 Unfortunately, that's part of the purpose of FASTRACK. To shut down a section of a line with travel alternatives provided by either nearby subway lines or bus service and not spring for shuttle buses. I'm hoping that 1) the B44 is fare-free between Eastern Pkwy & Flatbush Av and 2) extra buses are running to alleviate any potential overcrowding. However, while I do see the former happening, the likelihood of the latter is slim in my opinion.
Shortline Bus Posted January 6, 2013 Share #4 Posted January 6, 2013 This is what the should do when the is shut down for "fasttrack." 1)Fare-Free between Eastern Pwy/Nostrand ave station on B44. B44 runs every 30 minutes during this period between 2-5am. 2)Shuttle buses running every 20 minutes using artics between Franklin and Flatbush/Nostrand stopping only at line stations. Actually that is what they will be doing. They will probably mention extra B44 service from Brooklyn College to at max Fulton Street, to Connect to additional subway service than the fubar'd lines
lilbluefoxie Posted January 6, 2013 Share #6 Posted January 6, 2013 how many people are actually on the Subway between Franklin and Flatbush Avs that late at night?
alekr Posted January 7, 2013 Share #7 Posted January 7, 2013 It possible that they would add few B44 buses for the first 2 hours of fasttrack period. Then normal B44 service until 5am.

TwoTimer Posted January 7, 2013 Share #10 Posted January 7, 2013 It was said extra buses would be running, but I'm not sure if it were going to be designated as shuttles (making stops only at subway stations) or regular buses (making all requested and regular stops)
