STO and STM in Quebec test a BYD electric bus

The Société de transport de l'Outaouais (STO) will soon test a fully electric buses. The organization made the announcement Wednesday at a meeting of the Board of Directors.


The vehicle, manufactured by the Chinese company BYD will be commissioned in February, and for a period of six months. As part of this pilot project, the STO will evaluate the performance of the bus in winter and summer conditions.


The Société de transport de Montreal (STM) continue thereafter testing on its own territory, for another six months.


STO and STM hope to learn more about the use of different types of electric buses, share their findings and determine the technology best suited to their needs.


The vehicle is equipped with 12 meters of iron-phosphate batteries recharge slowly. It has an integrated system that does not require recharging station. Its range is 200 to 300 kilometers.


STO will pay $ 121,000 to test the bus and receive provincial funding.


The cost of the electric bus is the same as a hybrid bus, or $ 650,000. These electric buses are regularly used in China.
