Mayor Ed Koch Subway Station

Kamen Rider Mr Koch made a big difference in the city so he should be honored. Yes he does have a bridge named after him so why can't he have a station as well? Lets take a look at Martin Luther King, he has streets buildings and etc. lets also take a look at the late former president Kennedy, he has airports, streets and etc named after him. So why do you think Mr Koch should be restricted to just one landmark?

Personally, it kinda cheapens the significance if too many objects are renamed after the same person. Anyway, if they want to put a plaque/memorial, fine. But they shouldn't rename the station, its probably a pita to go thru every map and announcement programs to reflect the changes. It's not like 'rename' the station and accept it.

On an unrelated note: Rfk bridge, a total wtf. The guy was barely here for NY before leaving, it's like renaming the bridge after Hilary who didn't finish her term when she ran for president.

Personally, the subway station seems a better fit -- an announcement going "77th St-Ed Koch" or "Ed Koch-77th St" sounds perfectly fine.

I wouldn't have been so quick to rename the Queensboro after him, I still do (and forever will) refer it as the Queensboro -- totally agree with GC on the RFK issue, when you've got names like Queensboro and Triboro, stuff like that shouldn't be touched.

The significance here is that Koch was extremely famous for commuting to/from and using 77th St during his days in government and as a mayor, much more so than Mike Private-Subway Bloomberg in any case. So, he's dead, and they're giving him an honor. It's really not worth getting that upset about, especially considering how many things around the city are named after other various mayors and figures.

Nobody calls the Queensboro "the Koch" anyway...

Well, lets see;

It's a big bleeping bridge. It's not like it's a draw bridge on one of the small rivers, it's an east river bridge. It's not like they have a ton of those lying around.

They've been slapping people's names on everything around here, except subway stations. And I think it should stay that way. Unless they rename 77th as "Koch Blvd" or something.

I don't mind streets, I just find it awkward to do it to the subway. They've always be emblematic of where they are and what's nearby.

This is gunna set a very dangerous precedent, that all of our Subway stations are now up for grabs for naming rights. Whats next, a Bill Clinton station in Harlem? It would be funny as hell if that happened and there was like a porn store next to the station stairs. Or a Donald Trump station near the Donald Trump thing in Manhattan.

The difference between MLK and Ed Koch is like night and day. Koch helped the city. MLK helped an entire group of people and their descendants. Kennedy was the last "real" president this country had.and was assassinated because of it.

I'm still going to call it 77th St.

I still call Alantic Barclays station Alantic Ave-Pacific Street. I can definitely relate.

@ Grand Concourse: I loled really hard on the comment on Bloomberg! He does take the subway frequently. I wonder how he truely feels about it deep inside in his mind?

For once, I agree with the MTA management.  Stations should not be named after people.

@rr4567: Couldn't stop laughing at the vid.  Trololo can brighten anyone's day.

Same sentiments here. It should stay as it is. If that was what the IRT named this station as, it should stay that way.

Shot down! It's not gonna happen!

It made my day. Something went right today! lol.

I'll just transfer my comment on WABC-7's Facebook Page onto here, I think I worded it perfectly.

"No, the renaming of a subway station is not alright, the main reason that Barclay Center got the naming rights is because they paid money to rename a station to a MAJOR DESTINATION. Jay St. - Metrotech and 23rd St. - Court Sq. is technically merging of names so it can't apply, Willets Point is a community name so it can't apply as well. Mayor Koch can get the Queensboro Plaza station though because it is consistent with the Bridge, however I strongly disagree on the 77th St. Station, especially since there is nothing in the vicinity that is a MAJOR MEMORIAL of him. Thus, I fully agree with the (MTA)'s logical move.

I do respect and look up to Mayor Koch but I just don't agree with over-naming stuff after him." -Kevin.
